This is just what is needed for partial rv backup. Operates the ac and stuff perfectly. kzfaq.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y is quieter than my rv generator. Only suggestion is that it needs a fuel shutoff valve. So it is easier to store.

It's really disappointing that supposed professionals didn't even bother to carry out the most basic diagnostics to identify the problem with the engine, rather than just replace the entire unit! Your video was truly excellent, thank you for taking the time to record, edit and publish your work. I'm delighted to have found your channel and think that you inspire and encourage others to have the confidence to work on machines that they otherwise wouldn't!

As a professional mechanic, there may have been a bit more at play on this one. Labor rates, parts, and turnaround time quite possibly could have been a reason to replace it. If you're on vacation for 2 weeks, and it's gonna take 5 weeks to fix, lots of people would just say junk that one, install a new one. I believe he said this was a warranty replacement by Cummins too. They might have had something to do with that.

Yup god forbid somebody has to do something. If the facia is rotten we have to take the gutter off. When we redo the siding we have to deal with the electric and water meters and weatherhead. You’re a mechanic you’re supposed to be all tooled up for this, set up to get the job done. The answer is always “buy a new one” these days

Dean Marsh do you think an rv generator would survive alright driving a welder? The gen has more than enough wattage but the inrush current will be very high as you start and stop welding
@isettech
@isettech 5 жыл бұрын
@@ghettobikelife8833 Consumer grade generators tend to top out at the nameplate rating with maybe a 5 second overload for starting an AC. The inverter might not have the power headroom needed for welding. Inverters do not like highly reactive loads. For a welder, it should run a small unit that runs on 120Volt, but it won't run a 240 volt unit. The Eco mode on many portable generators is unable to cope with a high current start without turning off Eco mode first. I prefer commercial Diesel generators instead of consumer grade stuff as they run all day at 80% load. (example a genie light tower running 4 lights uses 1000 Watts per lamp + the ballast load. The generator is rated for 6KW. Reading the specs on the engine/generator combo inside, it can take 120% overload for 10 minutes. It has a 30A 240V outlet.

I think the reason for the "pop" on the intake is simpler than the one you suggested. With the exhaust valve not opening, the exhaust stroke would effectively be another compression stroke so when the intake valve opens, the cylinder is under pressure again.

I used to rebuild kubota's and perkins/cat c2.2 engines. Using starting fluid was the cause of push rods mysteriously poping out of place. I'd bet someone used too much ether and then they thought they had destroyed the engine. Nice to see another abused diesel brought back to life.

If that little rig were mine, I would engineer a remote mount oil filter, and an external oil cooler. It would increase the oil capacity, and add a second form of heat rejection. It would probably double or triple its life expectancy also.

1.1 quarts is not much for sure. Bet that shortens engine life. Especially in such a tight hot environment. I agree an external oil cooler for cooling and the extra capacity would for sure extend the poor girls life quite a bit. People saying its not worth it. A reliable long lasting compact 3kw gen is worth much more than a bulky broken one. Js. ✌👍👌

Mike - Some questions and observations in no particular order. First off, an outstanding video full of nuggets of info and observations. I personally don't care if you go weeks between your video's if we can get this quality and in-depth of a video! Kudos! Looking forward to seeing your new shop and all the clever design goodies you come up to outfit it with. I'm hoping that you didn't run the engine with the air filter off. The exhaust soot/coke that was collecting at the rear of the generator could just as easily been pulled into the gen housing and into the motor air inlet to say nothing of coating all the components within the gen housing. If I were Mr. Onan/Cummins I would be on the phone right now to your service department and in particular the person responsible for declaring the genset a warranty replacement! Even at $150 dollars an hour shop fee it would have been well worth the time to trouble shoot to the problem. I'm betting here that the actual charge back fees to Corp for labor and parts is way way less than the fees charged customers! If nothing else this should have been an instant in-house refurb candidate and not a junker! I am even more amazed that Germany with their high wages could produce and market this gen set cheaper than say Japan or Taiwan. Would love to know the economics of this set. Regarding your load set. Since most of the gensets that you load test are basically just single phase you can use the other legs of the load set instead of just phase 1 to spread out the 'wear' on each of the load phases. Not familiar with this particular load set but it should have the capability to go from zero to whatever the indicated max load is you have chosen. So if you were on the 20Kw load setting you should still be able to vary the load from zero to 20Kw ...I think. Also if you are doing high current loading with your load set, the covers are just as important as they are for the gen set for proper cooling of the internal load parts. I'll mention this again. I have no problem kicking in some money to get parts and cover some of your labor for the Cat genset. I hope that some of your other YT followers would be will be willing to do so. If you can come up with a "wish list" we can not only buy the parts, we can also hunt them down if need be. This will have to be coordinated so you don't end up with 24 thousand cotter pins!

Have the same generator on my 2017 Winnebago View. The orange wire is the temp sensor. Looks like the sensor end is cut off as the metal tip goes into the air filter housing. They are notorious for shutting down in the hot weather. The red button inside the housing actually shuts off the fuel solenoid to stop the engine. My solenoid got stuck open and would not shut off. Replaced the solenoid and all good now. Great video for my next problem with this generator!

Great stuff! I love getting machines like this, its the ultimate bargain! My guess is they took it in for a service and someone forgot to tighten the rocker adjustment properly and the exhaust backed off. Probably later diagnosed the intake kickback as burnt valves when it was actually "jake braking" out the intake since the exhaust system was no longer part of the plumbing! All the orange RTV in the exhaust pipe is the tell to me.....anytime I see RTV beyond a small bead or skim, its a sure sign of an amateur being involved....doubly so if its orange RTV since that stuff is rarely used by the OEM.

Good old 15/40! I was running a D8-H on a dam job when another crew decided to work saturday. I came in on monday and no 8. I hopped in the foreman's rig and we went hunting. It was hidden in a hollow, still RUNNING! It ran all weekend and had sutted the stack up to about a 1 inch hole. I pulled my coat over my head and yanked the throttle open. Soot rained down for a WHILE! When it slowed down I ran it over and filled it up with fuel and oil. It spit a piece of soot for a day or 2 but no after effects. Tough old lo speed Cat!

No replacement dozer was available so they decided to keep running it. It had over 10,000hrs on the engine. It survived. Nice thing about those engines is the block is good as new after sleeves. The cost for a full overhaul is low considering the price of a new machine.

The engine itself runs great, water cooled, kept up with oil changes and always run it under a load. 16000 BTU air conditioner, microwave, battery charger, TV. I have replaced the mother board three times now. Generator sits in a sound proof box and has a blower to vent heat. I have pulled the unit from the boat four times and had a mechanic go thru it thoroughly and I encounter the same problem every time. A generator will run great for about 4 to 5 hours and then it just quits producing electricity. Thank you in advance for any help or advice you can give me on this until.

That is a great generator. Here in Scotland I fitted a UK spec Dometic TEC 30D to my RV (have never even started the original twin cylinder Kohler, with petrol being about £1.30 a litre, or about $6.40/gal) It is a Hatz diesel and the controller looks very similar. Mine started with zero hours, now it has 518 on the clock. Mine needed a new fuel pump to get it going, it later needed a new exhaust pipe and a new air filter as it sucked in it's own exhaust from the split in the pipe. Under partial load it only uses about hslf a litre per hour and on a rainy day it can dry the ground under the RV. Mine's in a basement compartment with a vent at the side and bottom, makes it very slightly quieter.

1/2 liter an hour ? Of diesel ? How much does diesel cost ? I was thinking , that generator should power one , maybe two inverter drive 12,000 BTU ductless mini split A/C - heat pumps . Wyr God bless

It's rated for 2.5KW at 0.7 litres per hour at that and cuts out quickly at a little over 2.5KW. It'll certainly power one 12,000BTU split system, I've never had an inverter drive air conditioner, so don't know how intelligent they are, if they can be linked and programmed not to run at full power at the same time, then certainly. Once when driving from one campsite to another, my youngest daughter turned on 4 electric heaters, about 5KW in total, just by chance the thermostats were all clicking on and off at different times and the generator managed. For 2 heaters on a low setting and the battery chargers it's supplying about 1.5KW and using about 0.5 litres per hour, diesel is about £1.34ish, although I could use duty free diesel at about 70p a litre last time I checked, although I wouldn't fill up at a truck stop if the RV itself was diesel powered, mine's not so there's no risk of being harassed by the taxman. One other interesting feature the generator has (mine's an old 2008 model) is it can be daisychained to another TEC 30D for 5KW of power. I'm not sure how I ever found the money for one, I couldn't afford two, anyway I haven't seen it mentioned in the specifications for newer models, so I don't know if that feature is even still supported. If you have many thousands to spend on a generator, I'd check out some of the Cummins Onan water cooled generators. I saw one in a health service semi trailer parked in a supermarket carpark that I had no idea was even there when stood beside it, until a service engineer opened up the compartment it lived in. In the same place, I can hear mine from half way across the car park!

Yes that's about right. Your worst case scenario is about $18/24h in California, or $12.45 at about $2.80/Gal at full load for 24H. I bet it'd be less than $10 a day in quite a few states, the AC will use less power at night (or during the day up north in winter as a heat pump - which they're really good at). Back in 2011 at a house I used to live in, I bought a 12KW 415V 3 phase generator. A lot of businesses and almost zero homes have multi phase power here in the UK and back then 415V 3 phase equipment, costing many thousands new could be had second hand on eBay for a few hundred. I got a 4 Ton Hydraulic 4 post lift, compressor, a Lincoln Electric MIG welder and a Lincoln Invertec plasma cutter, an added bonus was I could get 240V off one of the phases for the house when winter weather knocked out the power. It had weatherproof housing and all it's doors locked, but it was really expensive, so I bought an old airport laundry trailer to mount inside.

Enjoyed the VID. That's the kind of stuff I do for fun. I have several small gas generators I picked up like that. Funny no one even tried to fix them. Just tossed them and replaced them. I'll bet that thing will quiet down a lot when you put the intake cap back on it. Like running a car motor without an air cleaner cover. Had a Diesel Motorcyle with one of those single cylinder diesel motors in it. Got 120 MPG but could only get 55 MPH out of it because it was only a 10 HP engine. Stereet legal but rode like a kids mini bike with a CV transmission. Sold it to a guy in Iowa and he rides it to work everyday.......

That's awesome! As many problems as they have come through, if it seems like it might be a major issue, it's cheaper for them to just replace the whole thing than spend time troubleshooting what could be an issue they won't repair. If it seems major it probably is so just proceed as if it is.

Sad that we all want smaller and smaller stuff but yet do not appreciate that it comes at a price..... I'm reminded of Cellular Phones..Initially....They were HUGE! But everyone wanted "the "smallest"...and even went in bars and bragged how "small theirs was..." (ouch) Then it all got daft...and the phones got bigger and bigger until most "cool" people are now walking around with phones at a size that would have been laughed at a few years back.... Crazy world? This Generator is the equivalent. Great video. Shows us all the reality of miniaturisation. In many situations: It doesn't work. If that unit had been but ....a foot wider.... it could have worked comfortably within its own specs..... Daft design. Inevitable result.

Ok now you did it. Got my brain turning and looking for a deal like you got. Easy fix. Looks like the adjuster just backed off and the push rod popped off. Leaving the exhaust valve closed made the combustion blow back through the intake just like a small block Chevy rounding off the exhaust cam lobe.

Perfect example of how easy we throw away things. This little generator has a Hatz mini diesel, with proper maintanance they will do many years of reliable service. At least you now have a nice little piece of good quality equipment, congrats!

Thanks for the video. I just purchased a Genset MG 13/10 AA generator that only had 52 hours on it since it was purchased in 1990. It was a backup generator on a chicken farm and when I was running it to test it, I noticed the same white smoke. It has a Ruggerini RD 270 two cylinder diesel engine which is bullet proof and considering the low hours, I wasn't sure if the filter was blocked or the injectors were dirty and the fuel wasn't burning. Since it was a backup generator and was placed under load once warmed up, I don't think the issue is glazing. I will hook it up to some heaters and let it run as I suspect it's just soot buildup in the exhaust as the smoking looks identical to what you showed in your video.

Just don't understand why some units are made that just seem to have such small oil capacities. I don't have the development skills to figure out how much it should have, but damn, 1.1qt in the sump just doesn't give you a lot of 'mistake space'. I put an outboard one gallon tank on my gennie, 25kW Generac Diesel, and just let it 'overflow' back into the crankcase. Gives the engine the extra gallon in capacity while keeping the oil level at the same place. I also put in a sight glass in the piping to allow a 'running check' on the oil level. Another Great video, Michael in Colorado.
