Miniature Guns Pt. 2

One of the coolest parts of our trip to Russia was a chance to check out scale model miniatures of some classic firearms. Everything from a FG43, Suppressed AKM, 1911, Thompson and everything in between they make them. The more impressive part is that they claimed that they would fire if they made ammo for them. Well we would put them to the test. This is part 2 of a 4 part series on the miniatures.

Exactly, a very niche firearm. Not many firearm enthusiasts appreciate how hard it must be to scale down a normal firearm. The tolerances, precision machining so all the moving parts perform properly and you don’t have an out of battery detonation, manufacturing full-auto trigger groups, bolts and selectors. The rifling is clearly nonexistent, judging by the tumbling of the rounds, but that’s as expected. I mean, rifling a regular barrel is hard enough to require skilled machinists, imagine a half or 1/3 size

Reminds me of the old russian tale where the finest watchmakers in the world had gathered at the Tsar's palace and showed off their creations - mechanical birds and whatnot, with a mechanical flea being the smallest and most impressive one. The Tsar was indeed very impressed and bought the flea, ordering his own smiths to make something smaller to brag about later. After months of work they said they were ready to present their results so the Tsar called for the makers of the flea to show off the new mechanical invention. The russian smith masters presented the same old flea - but it would no longer move. Enraged, the Tsar demanded an explanation, and the masters humbly admitted that they couldn't make a mechanism of such grace since they were simple old smiths, couldn't see well enough anyway and the tools they had are all but rough chunks of metal - what they did do is what they do best - they put some tiny horseshoes on the flea and signed it. And indeed, upon inspection under a microscope the flea was wearing a horseshoe on each of it's legs.

After seeing current pricing on other class3 firearms and considering the rarity of the mg42 you may very well be correct, but I still would never pay that much for one of those minis, I’d just buy something else cool. Just saw a twin .30 AA gun on mount for 75k .. much rather have that than a mini. Those are neat tho, just toys for millionaires. Also, how would an American be able to buy one of those? How’s that work? Mini or not it’s still a full auto firearm

***** that doesn't make sense... why can you have an AR with a 16" barrel but not a shotgun?
@ianloughney9570
@ianloughney9570 7 жыл бұрын
Please do not listen to Tyler, he is clearly somewhat misinformed. First and foremost, yes anything with a barrel under 16 inches must be regulated as an SBR or short barreled rifle. Many people can own an SBR upon purchase of a special tax stamp, although this can be a headache. SBRs do not need to have an overall length of 26 inches, so that becomes not an issue. As far as Tyler's suggestion these could be sold as pistols, the simple answer there is not if they're a mini of a rifle. If they have a stock (no matter how small) they're a rifle, end of story. In regards to shotguns, yes they are regulated at 18 inches, yes you can have an ar at 16" but not an 870 at 16", and yes that makes no sense, but its what the law says. If you want a shotgun under 18" or a rifle under 16" you don't need to find a company producing one, a Form 1 filed with the ATF allows you to manufacture your own SBR or SBS (short barreled shotgun) out of an existing weapon. Its perfectly legal (if not the best idea) to take a hacksaw to your shotgun barrel as long as you have proper paperwork for it. Final important thing here is the full auto issue. Full auto is regulated under the same law that regulates SBRs and SBSs so its just another tax stamp. I also want to highlight the phase tax stamp there, it is not a license as the OP suggested. Summing that giant brick of text up, no they're not categorically illegal. In fact buying the mini pistols would be just like any other gun. For the rifles you need an extra $200 (at least), but considering the $70,000 price tag, I'm assuming $70,200 isnt breaking a buyers bank.

@swampghost776
@swampghost776 8 жыл бұрын
I bet they could legally sell some of these (pistols and rifles) here in the u.s. if they are all sold as pistols. you could easily get around the atf technology department with the rifles because they are way to small to actually shoulder and as long as they are sold as semi automatic you would be in business. all they need to do now is get the science down pat so they could have production models and you could sell them for around 200 bucks and pick a caliber that is viable for people to get ammunition for.
@Glasher1
@Glasher1 8 жыл бұрын
I would think that there would be a problem. No matter what it looks like or tries to replicate, I believe the ATF would say, barrel length is barrel length. Being that you may not be able to shoulder the rifles, that would put you in the pistol category. I don't know the specifics (others can chime in here), but under a certain barrel length it is considered a pistol. I may be wrong.
