I like all the photos and am inspired to go look at our city's shadows soon. My favorite though is the vertically oriented one under the curved-in roof. The shape of the space is wonderfully revealed. I "converted" an xt10 to black/White with just jpg shots, all manual settings, b/w profiles, and old Minolta lenses. It's been an interesting change of pace. Thank you for your insights into your photos.

Love your compositions! Using darkness and light as almost graphic elements is awesome. Hard to pick my favorite, but probably the one of the man at the very far end of the stairway... beautiful. I need to start playing around with the tone curve as you did here on my x100v. I've only had it 2 weeks now, but loving it and falling back in love with B&W!

I love the choice to punch up the contrast w/ in camera settings and shooting this particular location. Also, was cool to see how when light turned from direct-hard to diffuse as cloud cover varied, it changed the transition between shadow and light and you changed your composition.

Getting home sick watching these videos from Seoul 😅. Really enjoyed the high contrast images with a lot of black space. DDP is interesting in a sense that I think there’re a lot less people out and about compared to usual, when it comes to these kinds of destinations in the city. But it’s not like some places here in Finland where you might have to wait for 15-30 minutes for someone to walk through the frame :D
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer 3 жыл бұрын
This was summer holiday week here, so everyone's off spreading COVID on the beaches. It makes for a pleasant number of people at DDP, though. Just enough that you can shoot minimally like this, but not so many that it's uncomfortable. Unlike Finland, we tend to have the problem of waiting 30 minutes so there aren't people in the frame. ;)
@SamiPaju
@SamiPaju 3 жыл бұрын
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Hmm my experience from DDP has been that it's a lot less crowded than say Bukcheon, Hongdae, Myeongdong, Insadong or any other place I tend to go to during my visits :) That said, I lived in Seoul a decade ago, so obviously things change and there are a lot photogenic places that I am not even aware of.

Hey Dylan, personally I really liked the shot where you exposed for the shadows and got that ultra stark, other-worldly bright, baron but detailed view of all that glorious concrete almost white in the luminance range. I was thinking that shot would have looked great with the original shadow darkened down so more, but not to the point of losing the eye being drawn to the dark skirt being worn by the lady top right in the shot. Out of curiosity, don’t recall if you mentioned it in your settings, but what DynamicRange setting(s) did you use, or do you leave it on auto (max DR200 I’m guessing in those conditions). Also, do you opt to go in full manual mode in these conditions, or just set your aperture and see how your SS falls or ride your exp. comp dial until you’re happy with the look?
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen! Thanks for watching! Interesting thoughts on the shadow darkening! It didn't even cross my mind. In terms of settings, it's super simple. DR100 (I very rarely even change this setting) and Aperture Priority (rarely use anything else on the X100).
