In todays video, I want to talk about paper clutter and documents. I try to be as paperless as possible but that does not always work. So I want to show you how I organize my documents and which things I keep in paper form.

In France we have a list of "which papers we have to keep and how long we have to keep them..." on the french government website. It's really practical ! Maybe there is something like this in other countries ?

Im so happy, that in Finland, where I live, everything is going paperless. Bank, insurance, health/doctor appointments, taxes. U can easily find the document u need from different websites.

I love that you are so honest and simple and real. I live in Greece and we also have to keep lots of documents in paper for many years.

I keep all m papers in a folder with 10 different sections. This way, i can have everything organised but only owning one object. In there, i keep medical records, uni application forms, certificates of attention, tax stuff, blank pages of paper and papers i need when applying for jobs. In Greece, nobody really tells you what to keep and what you can discard. This confuses me a lot as I often have to judge myself. I once needed a document that I had previously discarded and I had to go through the process of formally receiving it again:/ I just wish everything was digital!

Lia it is a pain keeping documents when you are Swiss and living elsewhere. I keep mine in paper form. You know very well how Swiss Authorities are plus all the rules and regulations we have in CH. Bless you Lia, your partner and darling son.

Lia are you still paying into Swiss AHV. Highly recommend doing so. Am sure Swiss pensions are a lot higher in Switzerland compared to Germany. Just hang onto every document - believe me. You are still young but just be prepared when you are 64 / 65 everything has to be submitted to AHV. Love from Zurich.

I am looking at several piles of stuff right now that I need to find a home for. My business taxes are the largest stack as there seems to be more papers every year that my accountant gives back to me. I also manage some of my son's investment things so I have to create some kind of simple document file for him that has all the passcodes and account numbers so in the far distant future when I'm not here he can find his money. I think that would be a good thing. :) There happens to be a nice zippered binder here that I bought for some other reason that I think will work for everything except my taxes. I think I'll just find a nice box and stash them in there. Your videos are always a gentle nudge for me to look at an area of my life that might need a bit of attention. I appreciate that :) And you.

I have a plastic file box that I've had for years. I have only about an inch thick of papers, but the box is so much bigger. I like the idea of just having a folder. When I owned a house and itemized things for taxes, I had lots of papers I had to keep, but I don't do that any longer, so my paper storage needs have shrunk.

What you have been able to do regarding paperwork is my goal with my own. My husband keeps EVERYTHING so even paperwork is a challenge to let go. 😂

I wish you luck! Paper can be really tough and It is one of the categories where people can be so different, I also know some people who would rather spend 100 hours and a lot of money to organize everything and have a whole room with every piece of paper they ever received than getting rid of it.... :)

For me the most annoying papers are monthly payrolls ( pay slip? I don't know the exact english word... Lohnabrechnung 😉 ). I really have to find out if it's really true that I have to keep them. After 20 years of working it's two large ringbinders, more to come. I'm sure I will never ever need them sometime.

Again (sorry!), insurance policies? If you were to marry, you'd have a family booklet, too... But yes, I guess you can manage with a lot less in your situation for now. In Switzerland, as you probably know, there is a lot of paperwork that needs to be kept for a long time - owning property and businesses means we are glad to have a separate office in our home :o Pets also bring paperwork! And ageing parents... and inheritence. Sometimes there is no end to the paper!! Things can get complicated if you have several nationalities and/or have a multinational life (work and/or homes in different countries, for example) and it all needs to be translated, plus the requirements are completely different everywhere... what is valid in one place is not necessarily valid in another (as an example, the French banks require a recent household bill as identity, for some reason, they are not happy with "just" (!) my Swiss identification or a certificate (in French!) from my town office!! Unfortunately, all our household/phone bills are either in my husband's name or our businesses'... problem :O!!!). I actually kept all my school reports and it's fun to look back at them (where I went to school, the teachers each had to write a whole comment, not just a grade!). Even more fun was when I found my parents' old school reports - and yes, I kept them!! ;) But then as an historian and linguist I'm sentimental about real documents/books/artefacts linked to our personal history!
