This follows on from my earlier Minimalist Europe Card Bus videos.
For MECB, to date I’ve designed and built a Backplane, a Prototype card, and a TMS9929A Video card.
The next logical step is to create my first CPU card.
To view my earlier MECB videos, please follow the link to the MECB Homepage.
If you find this video of interest, please give it a thumbs-up, and subscribe with notifications for future videos. Thanks.

Looks great, and making a template is a real timesaver if you have standard stuff....cheers !

Wow, just when I thoughty project was somewhat unique, I find someone making almost the same exact thing. Started with a 6809E, and the same DIN41612 connectors, but was going to use a faster EPROM for most of the memory decoding, and only a few extra logic ICs for the clock and bus signals. I'll have to check out how you've implemented the PLD, it's way cleaner

Great to hear that another Retro 8-bit enthusiast is also using the DIN41612 connectors. Curious to hear if you also had a historic connection to using these awesome connectors, or whether they're just something you found more recently and decided to use? Either way, an excellent choice. :)

@@DigicoolThings ha, definitely no personal connection to them, just have seen them in equipment here and there, and the eurocard format is a nice size for a lot of projects. They're also available at an electronics store near me, along with prototype boards and a back plane.

the schematic diagram would look better to my head if you used the bus wiring, so we can easy see where the data and address bus's went. Far better as well for finding missing connections than when you do the whole wiring via a netlist or global lables. sorry for nit picking 🙂 Still a great video series

Don't say sorry. I do completely agree! It was indeed my intention to add bus bars before finalising the schematic, also acknowledging your earlier video feedback (this schematic was originally done earlier). Unfortunately, I’ve been struggling with some health issues, so this video has taken a little longer than normal to put together, and this detail unfortunately didn’t get done. I thought it more useful to just get this video out, so I can progress onwards with my project. I do still intend going back and tidying this up as soon as I’m able to.

@@DigicoolThings I remembered that you had a health scare a while back, and I hope your well on the road to full recovery. I did feel like i was being a big nitpicker, but that could just be a sign of old age 🙂 I can remember all the fun of wire wrapping boards! used to make 8086 micro-boards like that for prototyping ideas. In them days getting a board made was only for final design checks before going into production as the costs of designing a PCB were so high mostly done by hand. And changes could be made with a little bit of a rewiring, kind of miss those days. You got to feel the components and the process as a whole. Keep them coming and I’ll keep watching and maybe a little less nitpicking. Or not 😂

Is there a reason why you chose the EroCard bus over, say, the ISA edge card found on XTs?

Hi. My bus approach was primarily driven by my own preference for the DIN EuroCard connectors themselves, mostly due to my own personal history with using EuroCard DIN connectors back to the 1980’s. I find these connectors very robust, very mechanically stable (without the need for card guides on these smaller design cards), as well as satisfying my preference for a keyed connector. Using the 8-bit ISA bus and its connectors, would have also necessitated card edge PCB’s, preferably with gold plating, adding significantly to the PCB cost. But, at the end of the day, bus (and connector) choice is a very subjective topic, so personal experience & preference usually wins out. :)
