just re-iterating that the most sustainable thing you can do is use through what you already have!! once you've done that, these are just things that I've used that have saved me a bunch of money and stress!! hopefully you get some inspiration from this video, and remember, you never HAVE to buy anything new or fancy if you don't want/need to! 💗

I've been using a safety razor for about 5 or 6 years now and it's amazing. But my tip for starting out is if you have a disposable razor still floating around, hold onto it for a while when you're getting used to the safety razor. It's better to keep using the disposable one on delicate areas until you build up your confidence with the safety razor.

One of the first swaps I made when trying to be more eco friendly was handkerchiefs. I know some may find those gross, but now I don't buy tissues unless I need some for guests, and I swear I could go through so many boxes of tissues with just one cold or by watching a sad movie, so I save an immense amount of money on tissues. You don't need fancy hankies, though I do recommend making sure they aren't super thin. You could even make some by cutting up old t-shirts.
@gracemakeslace
@gracemakeslace 8 ай бұрын
I had a friend who was crying when I was over at her house and I handed her my fresh clean hanky because she was about to use her shirt sleeve. Her reaction was absolutely adorable, she was so unsure of what to do with it she tried to hand it back to me after she used it, and we had a good little laugh about it. She'll get it back to me eventually (if she keeps it and decides to use it regularly, well that's a win, I have a sizable collection of thrifted vintage hankies and want to make lace trim for some new ones too).

I have horrible allergies and exclusively use white cotton hankies at home now! I wash them on hot with a little bleach and they are good as new again. They are super gentle on my nose and have saved me lots of money on tissues. I still use the little single packs for when I'm in public but otherwise it's hankies all the way, I'll never go back.

A safety razor and a menstrual cup really are game changers! I’ve used them for a few years now and they make life sooooo much easier! Also, I can’t even imagine how much money I have saved by not buying razors and tampons every month or so. I always recommended these items for everyone.

As a makeup user I think buying an empty pallet that I can put individual pans in has been good. If one runs out I can just recycle the aluminium pan and replace just that colour if I want to. I can also keep the pans for all my products in one pallet which saves space especially for travel.

For the razor the trick is to slide the fresh blade on the glossy side of your belt a few times because the blade has micro imperfections in them as they are mass produced and essentially what your belt does is snip those off so you won't cut yourself. Hope it helps, oh and you can collect the used blades and pass it off to the local metal collector (they melt is back together and if you have other scrap metal you can even get a bit of money) also you can use each 4 side of 1 blade, so don't throw it out if one side dulls

Another replacement for coffee filters: a French press! I have one and it's great. I think you can also use it for tea. Also, pro tips for using a safety razor: exfoliate your skin first, then put a thin layer of oil on before the shaving cream. The oil helps protect against nicks.

that's a super fair point!! I'm not a make-up girl so it definitely doesn't feel necessary to me. my point is that most people have rags/towels or old t-shirts that they can use, but it's also not realistic to expect people to sew their own from fabric scraps lol

A few weeks ago, after inevitably running out of my shaving products, I decided to look up other options because single use razors seemed so wasteful (even though I tried my best to get the most of them). That's when I discovered safety razor and ordered one. It elevated my shaving routine! My skin doesn't get as irritated and I don't get ingrown hair anymore. The learning process was super easy and so worth it. So if you haven't switched to safety razors yet, please consider doing that!

My go-to for cleaning is to use microfiber cloths that only need water from a company that's Fair Trade (I won't mention the brand name since I'm a consultant) - I haven't bought window cleaners or paper towels in YEARS. I've saved so much money! For books/e-audiobooks, I use Libby, Hoopla & Cloud Library through multiple libraries in PA, plus I sign up for Audible when they have either a free or really inexpensive trial subscription. I did technically buy *one* physical book this year, but I'll be sharing it with friends when I'm finished reading it.

Re: Razor blades. Oh my gosh! Thank you for the reminder! I need to go order more blades! I just bought the traditional Wilkinson sword double edged razor..."for men" :eyeroll: It works great for women too. =D. It is so easy to use! You just have to be careful not to apply too much pressure. Gives a delightfully close shave. Cost: $18 for razor, comes with 5 blades Refills: $10 for 100 blades. 1 blade lasts me at least a month or more, so the replacement blades I'm about to buy will last me 9 years at least. So my razor will end up costing me less than $30 for 10 years.

Your love of your kindle paired with the same reaction from a friend of mine, makes me want to buy an ereader again. I used to have one (not a kindle but one from a bookstore that's more local to my country) and while I loved it for a few months, it slowly sucked the joy out of reading for fun for me. I study literature in university and have to read a lot anyway, and using the ereader for academic texts, literature I need for classes as well as stuff I read for fun, just made me give up reading for fun completely. Only when it broke while I was abroad and I re-discovered the joy of public libraries and the smell and feel of both new and used books did I start to enjoy reading again. Granted for 'on the go'-reading, it is a lot easier but I tend to prefer audiobooks for that anyway. The only thing that makes me consider ereaders again is the ton of free books I could get through my library or services like kindle unlimited. That would be a lot cheaper than my audible subsciption plus the extra audiobooks and used physical books I tend to buy.
@gracenevitt
@gracenevitt 8 ай бұрын
don't get it because you feel pressured!!! I got to a breaking point where I wanted to stop buying books, wasting money and cluttering my home. all while basically letting half of them collect dust on my bookcase... if you feel like a real book is better for you, then use the library and shops for that! I'm saying that for me it made the most amount of sense and I've been able to read nearly any book I could ever want for free and without bringing clutter into my home. it was a major win-win for me, but if you think you would buy it and rarely use it? no shame in knowing yourself and not getting one.
@toffeefuchs

@@gracenevitt don't worry I'm not feeling pressured. It's more like a temptation of my inner shopaholic. The reflection of typing the comment actually made my urge to buy it diminish significantly. I once told myself I would only seriously consider an ereader again once I finish my degree. Before that I'll stick to my audiobooks and the occasional used/libarby book or even more rarely a paperback that I buy signed from small, unknown authors I want to support.

Mine has hoopla, Libby, Kindle, Kobo, and a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head because I don't use them often. I’m going to say this as someone who actually LOVES wild deodorant as concept, but knows that some people cannot do non-aluminum deodorants (I’m that smelly gal). Aluminum deodorants are completely safe. There are countless studies showing this. Aluminum does not pass into the bloodstream through the skin. If the skin barrier couldn’t keep things like this out, we’d never have survived as a species. If you want to do the eco-friendly deodorant and it works for you, yay that is so awesome. But don’t worry about your health if you can’t, it won’t harm you.

I used wild but it kept slipping out of the case for me 😭. I started using salt crystal deodorant (you might be so sceptical, I was but I had to do it for science …) and it actually works really well for me. I wasn’t a stinky girl in the first place but it kind of totally eliminates any bad smell because the salt kills the bacteria in sweat that makes it smell badz

It’s so simple! You either run it under the tap and apply it to dry skin or use it right after the shower on wet skin. You just let it dry in between uses. I have the salt of the earth one that comes in a little plastic case 😎

oh my godddd, stop talking about ebook readers! no, im joking, im salty and sad bc i lost mine in the train this year and they are quite expensive if you want to get a decent one that isn't a kindle. but i asked my whole family (myself included) to buy me a new one as a christmas gift. i find it funny bc I am a librarian and technically i have a shitton of books around all day, but a reader is must have.... anyway, great video (i don't think that period stuff are weird to show on yt 😅 it's fine), oils are cool, can't wait for the next video 💕

I’ve used wild for a little while now and as much as I love it, I feel like the refills don’t last very long 😢 and in turn end up costing more than other natural deodorants.. so saving money wise I don’t know if I’ll keep going… but eco wise I think they’re great!

Have you tried Native? They are aluminum free (have sensitive skin options) and have a plastic free cardboard option. I really like them! They're normal deodorant size and last quite awhile for me.

@jennylhenry78 I haven't but my sibling did once and got a really bad reaction to it (and that's a consensus I've heard frequently over the past few years). if it works for you then that's great! but I'm personally a little nervous to try it...

ethique has a shampoo bar that is for textured/curly hair, or any shampoo bar line that has a gentle cleanser should work well. Hi-bar has a moisturizing, scent free bar as well. Just make sure its actual shampoo (ph balanced, detergent cleansers) and not soap (saponified oils) bars. If you have hard water, the soap-based shampoo bars will create soap scum in the hair. you can also look into water-only washing, but this requires a complete change in how you conceptualize hair care.

You can still get toxic shock with menstrual cups, even though they are better than tampons in terms of risk! What causes toxic shock is the blood staying inside for a prolonged period of time. You should empty the cup maximum every 8 hours and change to a pad/period underwear if you can't do that (for example, overnight)🩸

Auqaphor is pretty expensive and Vaseline tests on animals (according to PETA’s website) so do auqaphor last for a long time?❤
@gracenevitt
@gracenevitt 8 ай бұрын
okay so after doing some research.. it seems vaseline is owned by a parent company that might do animal testing although the product itself doesn't seem to do it. aquaphor also uses animal testing .... but there's a few brands that are vegan and cruelty free! one of them is vegaline and another is cocokind. but the product itself does last a long time. a little goes a long way.

The essential oils one was a hot take b/c inhaling essential oils arent good either (but its probably better for your lungs than candles) and who am I to talk b/c I burn incense in my house 😅
@gracenevitt

people keep commenting this and I have literally looked up scientific articles and none of them (that I have found) say that inhaling diluted essential oils is bad for you if you have healthy lungs. obviously it's different if you have a lung condition or something, but for "normal" people with healthy or regular lungs, it doesn't seem to be particularly unhealthy. 😭

Oil diffusers aren't good for kitties tho😬 Also what studies did you find about soy candles? Not that I think you're wrong but some studies are misleading and just because there's a study doesn't mean there is enough research done on the subject to come to a particular conclusion. It's also very difficult to read the actual scientific study. Some articles that include these studies have just skimmed it really, and that's understandable because as a journalist it's not required to learn all the scientific jargan and whatnot. And like I'm no professional but yeah it's worth looking into more. Obviously if you don't wanna take the risk of candles even if soy based, go for it.

Essential oils are also bad for health you should check à but more especially bad for animals
@gracenevitt
@gracenevitt 8 ай бұрын
oh no!! thank you for this info!!! I'll do more research into this! edit: after a brief google search, it seems that oil diffusing is generally fine for your lungs if you have the correct water-to-oil ratio (although it may potentially aggravate someone with asthma or another respiratory condition). it does seem that there is no actual benefit to doing it besides just a potential mental (but not physiological) calmness associated with the smell. in terms of pets, it seems that cats are more sensitive to oil diffusing, and dogs can tolerate it a little more. it does seem to be advised to never let your pet ingest an essential oil or let it touch their skin directly. all in all, moderation is key with all things and as long as you're not diffusing all day, every day, I don't see a major health problem with it :) if anyone is really nervous about it, I'd also suggest doing simmer pots on the stove or on an electric kettle sort of situation. last winter I did one with cranberries, cinnamon, and oranges and it was the most amazing christmas smelling thing ever :) cat safe scents: frankincense, chamomile, lavender dog safe scents: myrrh, frankincense, chamomile, lavender, ginger. rosemary

Maybe a personal question, but are you vegan? When it comes to cost reduction and sustainability many people abstain from meat and animal products. It would save everyone more money than using a reusable filter or refillable deodorant. Way to get that bag with the sponsorship though !! I personally just stopped shaving, using deodorant every day, and I free bleed on my period (def not the right options for everyone) but that’s the cheapest and most sustainable way. I definitely wanna try a shampoo bar. I use laundry detergent or bleach for almost all my cleaning. My defuser stopped working and now I put essential oils on dried flowers and they smell great for a long time and look pretty. I only thrift and upcycle things and I’m learning to sew so I can make and repair things. Thanks for the video and sorry for the long comment, but I know it’s good for engagement!!

great question!!! the thing that really kicked off my love for sustainability was actually the fact that I gave up meat in junior year of high school and then became fully vegan in college. unfortunately, I've had to go back to being a pescatarian (for health reasons I'll get into in more detail in a video I'm posting in January), but I always encourage people to cut out animal products whenever and wherever they can. I just know that it's not always possible with some people's finances or health :/ it absolutely shattered my heart that my body wasn't built for veganism, but I know that feeding myself properly and trying to source things in the most sustainable way is the best and only option I really have... it is what it is!

you don't have to go vegan to save, just go whole natural foods and it makes a huge difference, especially if you make simple things and make them all from scratch. doing that cut my food bill in half. My food budget for my husband and I is $360 per month.

I like a lot of the ideas and products mentioned, but I don't appreciate how one sided and under researched this video is. Aluminum has not seen a directly linked correlation with disease due to the weight of the molecules, moisturizers are not the same thing as occlusives (oils), and defusers can wreck havock on your lungs just like candles.
@gracenevitt
@gracenevitt 7 ай бұрын
I do definitely apologize for the aluminum thing! someone else mentioned that in the comments and I had no idea that whole idea about aluminum was debunked (shows me that I have to triple check things before I include them in my videos), but I've done research about diffusers and it seems they're only inflammatory if you use them incorrectly or have existing lung problems.
