Inspired by Dawn, the Minimal Mom, I've started decluttering my home and noticed that a similar concept applies to our homeschool planning. Overcrowding our homeschooling inventory with too many subjects can lead to overwhelming situations. I share some tips on reducing this 'inventory', focusing on core subjects for younger children, and how to smartly integrate others.

I have loved Dawn from The Minimal Mom four about 5 years now and have been working to keep things more minimal in our home and homeschool! I completely agree that we can keep our homeschool more minimal and it leads to less burnout and stress. ❤

I told my husband that this was your topic today. His answer was "ask and ye shall receive!" because we had Just been talking today about my feeling overwhelmed about how much is Enough. And YES PLEASE to high school minimalism ideas!

Love it! This year I homeschooled 5, ages 5-12. We did an hour together every morning, which consisted of: Prayer, Bible, Hymns Singing, Scripture Memory, and reading aloud classic literature. We then moved on to math; my older ones could mostly work independently, so I just had to check their work and go over a problem or two; that took about 1hr 15 min (the kids were aloud to have a quick snack once done with their math). I then got everyone through Language Arts (reading, writing, grammar), once again having the older ones work indepdently and do one reading with a written narration; that was about 1 hr 30 min. Then we would spend about 45 minutes doing 1 subject on rotattion: Histroy, Science, Art & Music, Geography. Next was Lunch and outdoor play. Lastly, a quiet reading hour. This would bring us to 2:30 or 3:00.

Love this, Pam! It is so hard not to get swept up in wanting to do All.The.Good.Things. I appreciate the reminder to be more free and simple with these early years. (Especially because I only have one in the early years and everyone else is high school and college now!) 😞

After thinking about it, I'm going to start my firstborn with the traditional three Rs: Reading, wRiting, and 'Rithmetic. I think that will challenge us all (youngers have to self-occupy) plenty.

I agree that read alouds can cover all of those other topics like science, history, etc. And it's so simple just to add a read aloud to the 3 Rs.

Love Dawn’s advice and your advice! I’ve been listening to Dawn for over a year now, it has been life changing! And your advice is just so wise. Question: What if our state requires that we teach all those subjects?

I ask the same thing about required hours. I see so many homeschooling moms metaphorically skipping through a meadow at doing school in 2 or 3 hours a day and I'm just like......*blink* Our state requires hours *and* certain subjects. It's not as bad as some other states (and I'd teach those subjects anyway) but still...I can't wait to move. Counting down the days!!!

Absolutely the same way I have been feeling Pam!! Baby #5 is coming this summer and I'm realizing that I overcluttered our schedule last year and I'll need to simplify again this year. I also LOVE Dawn from the minimal mom and you should definitely read Dana White's book Decluttering at the Speed of Life if you're having fun decluttering. It's so funny!
