Ok, so that was totally fun and exciting to watch. As I understand it, for this test you're in a climb attitude and the gascolator and fuel tanks are about on the horizontal so you're probably not getting gravity fuel flow, hence the need for the fuel pump when climbing? Hopefully, the pump doesn't doesn't drain the battery before you get up to 12,000 MSL 🤣!

We have calculated that I can run 5 hours continuous as well as the radio and secondary ignition. Of course it’s theory and we’ll see what reality is. I do read volts on my instrument so I can keep an eye on it. I’m thinking I’ll mostly fly within a couple hours of my home port most of the time. It’s really fun at this stage…wish I was 20lbs lighter, but I’m just gonna have to lose that myself to trade for fuel. I may build another elevator since it’s the furthest thing hanging back there. With me and 5 gallons of fuel, my CG is 30% and right at 560lbs. With only 2.5 in each tank, there’s no fuel to move my gauge on its tail. I’m also gonna have to add some float to the bottom of the ones I have so it sits on the floor of the tank because I could barely register 2.5 gal in a level condition. Lots of interesting things to work through at this stage…still fun though

Hey Michael, still working through the numbers and going to run them one more time with some aviation scales that a fellow pilot is going to loan me. Really nice people at my airport. So with me in the cockpit and 5 gallons of fuel, I fall right at the upper right corner of the flight envelope, 560lbs and 30% chord. I don’t have a lot of ways to shed weight except from my own body. Interesting enough, with Parker in the cockpit (who weighs 145) the CG goes too far aft. But we’ll try that again soon. Possibly the best move is to go ahead and move the engine forward and attempt to get the CG closer to 24-25%. Also thinking about just building a lighter Elevator since it is the most rearward component. A lot to think about.

@@DTMinimax Dennis, is that 535lb number still valid, with your wife in the cockpit? If so, I would think adding 30 more pounds (5 gal fuel) might put you slightly over the limit - 4 gallons would be under, at 559 lbs. The fuel burn for your VW is, I believe, around 2.25 to 2.50 GPH. At that burn rate, 4 gallons would give you ~ 1.77 to 1.60 hours of time at cruise. Yes, some fuel would be used for "start, taxi, and takeoff." But that gas is probably already in your gascolator and fuel lines. :-) I would guess that when you fly your wonderful little plane, you won't be flying more than a "One Hour Sortie. " An hour in these small planes is quite a bit. Having said that, your present "state" is really GOOD. You can GO with what you got! No changes would be necessary. Moving the engine forward might yield a slightly better CG, but the weight would either be the same, or slightly more, with the additional framing for the engine move. I just don't think the Horizontal stab will change things, if any. Only a thought, here: If you change the tires and allied braking systems, there would be a measure of weight reduction there, which could be added to the fuel tanks. You could use those "small, spoked, hard rubber tire," types, or just much smaller wheels. Yes, it would not be, totally, the look you would be looking for, but hey, you can go with full fuel - farther. I know you could design a new light braking system. We followers of yours, just want to see you get the result you have been working so hard to achieve. Mike

I will be very interested in what MGL say about the oil pressure sender. Great that it started and only a few little tweeks needed. Did you try the fuel flow in flight attiutde with gravity?
@DTMinimax
@DTMinimax 11 ай бұрын
I did the fuel flow yesterday with the longerons level and got a gallon in 7:38. That’s 8.1 gallons/hour. I only needed to hit 5 to double my demand so that’s good news. I got an 80psi 5 Bar as they recommended and it worked perfectly!

@@DTMinimax I take it that's with the pump, do you get any flow with the pump off? I think you did not put in a pump by pass and so will have to run the pump.

@@DTMinimax briliant news so you don't need to run the pump all the time. I wonder if you will need to go back to the larger float jet, only testing will tell.

Hey Dennis, I was wondering if those fuel tanks were vented. I know when you have a dip in the line, that can stop it as we go through this on everyone of those things I work on when we have to drain a few gallons of fuel from each tank after we fill them for the very first time so we just make sure the hose we use stays straight. lol Also, didn't I hear you mention a long while back that you had previously built a mini-max? I would like to hear about that some time and about the differences between the two if I am not remembering wrong.

Do you have fuel pressure regulator? If so it shouldnt exceed 3 to 5 psi so that it doesnt overpower the needle and seat in the carb.
