I love all these expert comments from all these electrical engineers in the comments below. If you all want to know what real life is - here it is - my 12v system lasted my 5-6 trolling. I upgraded to a 24v system and I'm getting EASILY 14-16 hours on it (over 2 days at the lake). Same boat, same lake, same everything. That's REAL LIFE. Sounds to me like it's roughly 3 times maybe approaching 4 times the duration (but not quite). REAL LIFE is all that counts for me.

Nice video guys but I'm pretty sure you're out with your maths regarding the run time. Assuming your 12v battery and 2 x 12v batteries in the 24v setup are all the same capacity you are only going to get roughly 2x longer rather than the stated 4x longer running time. This is because both setups will still have the same amp hour rating as your doubling your voltage not amperage on the 24v system (when running 2x 12v batteries in series). The 24v will have roughly half the draw at same power output compared to the 12v. In practice your 24v will run more efficiently than the 12v particularly at high power outputs thus delivering slightly longer run time than just 2x. I went through this dilemma 3 months ago. Initially buying a 12v before exchanging for a 24v just prior to install on a 5.75m aluminum v-hull. Could not be happier. The boat can hold a spot against strong current and wind all day and never dropped below 50% of charge on the 24v 110aH setup. Only issue is weight. TM + 2 batteries + on board charger = 100kg.

the 24V setup will run at lower amperage to the motors which takes advantage of improved efficiency. So you will get more than double the run time for the same conditions because the motors will be running at half the amperage for the same power which will have higher efficiency and less losses.

@@okiefreemen mnesporek addresses efficiency. He is correct, what these guys claim of 4 times as much is just plain FALSE. This is not magic. If you ran a 12v system with 2 batteries in parallel then the 24v setup with 2 batteries would only run slightly longer due to effciency and no where even close to twice as long.
@okiefreemen
@okiefreemen 3 жыл бұрын
@@boltactionshooter no your still wrong.. the 12v achieving the same thrust as the 24V would have to run at full power which is not just a little worse efficiency, it is alot.. real world proves it out.. the 24V system with same amp hours will get around 40% longer run life. Not double we agree, but it's not just a little bit more it's alot.

Depends too on lake or river, I fish mainly river so went with 36 volt setup even though it's more costly but it's worth it when dealing with river current. 24 volt should be minimum on anything but the smallest stripped down boat.

I'm surprised nobody's brought up 6 volt commercial / utility high amp hour deep cycle batteries. You get 2 to 10 times to run time depending on the type of 6 volt battery and you just run them in series to get your 12 volts and you can always run a set of two with another set of two and parallel to quadruple your amp hour output. I work on motorhomes as well as other equipment at my repair shop and everybody who's ever gone with my advice for a 6-volt battery storage system in their camper or boat are extremely happy with it because you could make the same amount of voltage last way longer sure it weighs a little bit extra and it takes up a little bit more storage space but the amp hour output and potential storage the whole way out do any deep cycle or marine 12 volt standard battery.

Thank you for your video. Here is a question for you. I am building a 16' aluminum tiller boat to be used in an area with a 25HP limit. I am trying to be very conscious of weight so that the boat can get on plane with three people fishing in it. I was thinking of using the 12 volt Minn Kota Terrova and an optima battery. In you opinion, what can I expect the run time on a single charge to be, say operating at 50% or better?
@ValleyMarine1
@ValleyMarine1 3 жыл бұрын
Most 16ft aluminum tillers (Lund 1600 Fury for example) will run and plane just fine with a 25hp motor. Additionally, having two deep cycle batteries up in the bow will actually help the boat to be more stable because the weight is distributed better. In a tiller setup like you are considering, a high percentage of the weight is in the transom. If the boat is floating bow high, it will catch more wind. You want the boat to be level so that the chine has some bite.

2x longer rather than 4. It all comes down to watts consumed. Both motors will consume roughly the same amount of watts however there could be minimal efficiency gains on the 24 volt system.

@@ValleyMarine1 Wrong! 12V motor with 2 batteries in paralel compared to 24V with 2 batteries in series (to get 24V) will run basically the same! Maybe around 10 % longer run time on 24V because you would have a little less losses on cables. CERTAINLY not 4 itmes as long. YOur math is wrong mate.

@@ValleyMarine1 The only time it would be 4 times as long on 24V system would be IF you would run 24V system on 12V battery (but then you would get 4 times less power, and also 4 times longer run time). Don't forget about brushed versus brushless. Brushless is way more efficient because it's variable speed. In this video they used a 55 lb 12v brushed versus a 80 lb 24v brushless which will equate to 4 times longer. This doesn't account for prop size which does make a slight difference in efficiency. I'm also lmao because you really don't understand motor size and amps by size. According to what you said they both pull same amount of power???? Top amps for 55 lb is about 52 amps versus 80 lbs is 72 amps. Your a mathematical idiot.

Going from 12 volts to 24 volts only adds $150. When you increase the voltage on the motor (12v to 24v) you reduce amp draw accordingly. The 24 volt will go twice as long on the same two batteries as a 12 volt with the same two batteries run in parallel.

The speed of the trolling motor doesn't matter. Like it says, it's a trolling motor. 2 miles an hour is a good speed to troll. Even a 40 pound thrust motor will give you that speed. It's not worth spending a lot of money on a trolling motor, it's only made to troll.

This video is completely apples and oranges. 1st is the two are completely different motors brushed versus brushless. 2nd is amp draw with variable speed versus set speed. Just these 2 factor's a lone should make you never view, listen or take advise from salesmen dumbbells. What makes me qualified on this is my understanding of power, back-up systems amp and volt distribution that I had to engineer in multiple places during war time communication battle locations for Generals and other command teams.
