A promotional film that depicts scenes of Minneapolis, Minnesota, circa 1968 (Thank you to James Lileks). Footage includes the Nicollet Mall, Minnehaha Falls, the Aquatennial Parade, the Minneapolis skyline, the University of Minnesota, and the Chain of Lakes. This film is part of the Archives and Special Collections at Augsburg University. It has been made available for educational use.
Music written by Dick Wilson, arranged by Ray Charles (not to be confused with the soul singer), and possibly performed by The Ray Charles Singers. (Thank you to user Lee Blaske for providing this information). This film is a creation of Chapman/Spittler Productions and was originally created for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, now part of Lumen Technologies.
Digitized from a 16mm film with separate sound on 2019 February 9 by Home Video Studio in Bloomington, Minnesota. The original film has been sped up to match the sound; it had stretched over time.

My grandfather drove through Minneapolis as a boy in the 1940s on his way to the boundary waters. He remembered seeing the Foshay tower and it being the tallest building he had ever seen. And then he drove back on the 1970s with his kids and it was absolutely dwarfed by the other buildings that were built in between the 40s and 70s

What saddens me is the utter lack of diversity back then. It was a very closed off, restrictive world if your skin was the wrong color or if your gender identity didn't square with the status quo. We are living in a far better city now, don't be fooled.
@AryanSneed
@AryanSneed 3 жыл бұрын
@@justinbetland9792 Why would that sadden you? What are some of the inherent good things about having a multicultural society? Also 95% of the country back then was White so most of the big cities looked like this demographically.
@braddocke.hutton7392
@braddocke.hutton7392 2 жыл бұрын
@Mystical Minneapolis was always a diversity holdout, until we finally allowed affordable housing projects in the late 60's. This attracted families from places like Chicago and Gary Indiana. But the historically generous aid Minneapolis offers to low income residents is just a weak attempt to offset the less than welcoming attitude toward people of color and new immigrants, which still sadly prevails in most working class Minnesotans. I've always been proud of my city itself, but I'm also painfully aware that the less educated Minnesotans hold us back from reaping the real rewards that a diverse urban community would bring. If you really have to ask yourself what benefits a multicultural society might offer then I see no reason to continue this discussion. Go live out in flyover country USA so your racism isn't so triggered snowflake. The rest of us will keep progressing toward the future and making sure we have an equitable city that benefits all of its residents.

Even though the 60s, particularly the late 60s, were a time of great civil unrest in the cities, much like the unrest we see today. Someone might look at the 2020s with nostalgia thinking, oh 2020, what a peaceful time when you could just work from home and chill. I overall agree though, I love the music and the peaceful footage in it.

The song was written by Dick Wilson, and arranged by Ray Charles (the other Ray Charles who, among other things, had been the musical director for Perry Como). Dick Wilson and Ray Charles also collaborated on the famous "We're Gonna Win, Twins" theme song. Not sure, but Ray Charles had his own singing group, "The Ray Charles Singers," so it's possible they sang this.

The Ray Charles Singers are the group heard here. It was released as a mono single on Enoch Light's Command label and in stereo on the album "What The World Needs Now Is Love" in 1966. ABC Records bought Command in the 70s and haven't reissued any of their catalog to my knowledge. Luckily, the album was released on 7.5 IPS tape in '66, which I found on eBay and made a nice copy of on my channel for those interested.

As I recall, this was not a song written out of love, like "Chicago", "New York, New York", or "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", but was commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce. Kind of takes the shine off of it. The fact this is the first time I've heard it in fifty years shows it didn't have a lot of staying power.
