The WHA was definitely a "maverick" league, but there were also some great players who played in the WHA as well!

The WHA was the best thing that ever happened for Hockey! It helped bring many quality players from Europe and helped raise salaries for every player.

Horseshit. European players were soft and sped up the change into today's game. Why do you see a rise in salaries as a positive thing? How and why do you think it's acceptable for anyone to make over a million annually?

@@incumbentvinyl9291 Sports is entertainment. If the public supports the product, whether it's film, music, comedy, sports etc. and astronomical revenue is generated, the entertainers deserve to be fairly compensated. If sports were not generated revenue, athletes would not be earning the salaries they're being paid. Quit whining and get over your jealousy of people who are earning more $$$ than you could ever dream of earning!

@@incumbentvinyl9291 WAKE UP! Sports is an Entertainment Business. Any Business which generates astronomical revenue, will compensate the entertainers. Very very entertaining, I had season tickets for a few of those years and the playoff games against the Houston Aeros were the best.

Was the playoffs between the Aeros and Saints portrayed more or less accurately in Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story?

Not even a mention of Frank Polnaszek?? He was the WHA head statistician - but he got his start with the Fighting Saints ... he used to say that all the stories in "Slap Shot" were real and they didn't even show a quarter of it! He later wrote for several magazines, worked for the Hartford Whalers, and published a couple books on hockey as well. He passed about 5 years ago or so just outside Chicago, Illinois.

Unfortunately his books are very expensive on Amazon.

We need another WHA or "Rebel" league today. With the NHL being so watered down and tickets being over priced I think a rival league would flourish. Bobby Hull was promoting the WHA's comeback in the late 90's after the Jets left Winnipeg but I understand that the investors got nervous and pulled out.
