Panic over downtown crime. Demolition of homeless encampments. Civic leaders worried about businesses fleeing the city. Welcome to the City of Minneapolis in 2022. But it also feels a lot like 1958.

Minneapolis has been dealing with this same exact problem as long as people have lived here. Before the Gateway or homeless camps in Philips, there was Bohemian Flats.

Ask the neighbors what they think. The shootings, stabbings, drug use, overdoses, theft, noise.

Mr. Hewitt our government needs to stop throwing money at bloated and corrupt government contractors like Salvation army, Goodwill and Catholic Charities. It needs an affordable housing plan for the short and long term.

One of the things that drives me crazy about when encampments are torn down these days is that people’s belongings get put straight into a dumpster. Minneapolis parks have a lost-and-found system so if you lose something and it gets turned in by someone (wallets and phones get turned in more often than you would think) the item will be in lostandfound for a period of time. If a person moves out of their home but leaves stuff behind, the landlord is required to store your stuff for a period of time. But stuff found in a homeless encampment gets put straight into a dumpster. And if you want to say “but, Beth, these people were told a long time ago to leave”, well, when a person moves out of an apartment even if they gave notice two months earlier, or longer, the clock doesn’t start ticking on the 30 days that the landlord has to store the stuff until the actual move-out date, not sooner.

This was a good report but I never heard a word about the 1200 or more men from the 1950’s into the 1960’s regarding their U. S. Veteran status. I was a graduate in 1965 from De la Salle High SchooI and took a bus over to Nicollet Island and home to South Mpls everyday of the school year. We would refer to those homeless men as hobo’s or bums as we stared out the bus windows in disrespect. It was later in my adult life, I discovered that many of those men were Veterans of WW2 and Korea, suffering from the terrible effects of war. I’m not a Veteran but our Federal, State, and city government, and we as a people sure failed them. I felt the shame of this realization years later. This information should help all of us see another difference between those who are in the homeless camps today and those from 60 years ago, unless of course, some of these men and women are Veterans as well. May we always have a special place in our hearts for those who serve our Country.

The county has all kinds of resources to help them. The report makes it sound like this is their only option. It isn't.

I don't understand why addiction and mental illness is never addressed. Many of the homeless are unemployable because of it. Others simply prefer the lifestyle and don't want the responsibility of shelter.

I'm pro bulldozer. Letting people that can't manage their own lives live in absurd self destructive ways helps nobody. Well managed founded and policed Shelters is the only solution that works.

You must be a Democrat. You people always have a way of showing your racism! How many shelters we could have built with that money Biden gave to the Ukraine. And Somalians have legal immunity.

Well looking at that with emotional music can make many folks sympathetic. But with evidence provided from other homeless encampments we find wide spread drug use, stealing power, and if left unhindered it becomes a dangerous no-go zone at tax payer expense. I'm sorry bad things happen. But places are hiring get a job fix yourself up. Get to work. Opportunity is out there.
