In this video I review the Minolta Rokkor MC PF 58mm f/1.4 vintage lens. The lens aperture range is from f/1.4 to f/16 and not f/22 as mentioned in the video and at one point I also mention the lens is a 50mm prime and it's actually the 58mm prime lens.
All video shot in 1080HD and edited using Cyberlink PowerDirector 15.
This video was recorded on my Sony A7 II using the 16-50mm kit lens.

The 58mm f1.4 is superb. I’ve had mine since 1972. Minolta built Leica lenses with Minolta glass. Now that’s saying something. The 58mm is also a superb video lens. Bokeh is beautiful. Nice video you made.

For the unenlightened it is good to mention that the Sony A7 is a full-frame camera, and you keep the 58mm angle of view. On my crop-sensor Fujifilm the angle of view becomes about 87mm f/2, which might even be a better portrait length

Thanks for this video! I picked one up for for 55 USD recently and it's in mint condition. Seller denoted 'oil on the aperture blades' so I had my kit ready for a rebuild including Japan Hobby Tool grease #30... But nope, the seller had major OCD. It's a beautiful lens that takes much better photos than even some of my newer Sony lenses (also a Minolta to Sony migrant). Thank you!

15 Euros an absolute bargain and congratulations. I definitely like the lens renders out of focus areas much better than modern lenses.

Hey.. Nice job man from the Rocky Mtns in the USA !! I hate all the talking heads that don't go out and shoot with the gear they make videos about,,, but you nailed it,,Great Images. I sold all the major brands of cameras in the 70s and 80s and I always considered Minolta lenses as under-rated gems!!. One reason for the extra flair on the lens surfaces is that Minolta didn't employ a coating system ,,like Canon's SSC. They encouraged the use of filters and offered many of their own in graduated densities..Anyway--great find,, I really enjoyed the video...

Thanks for viewing and glad you liked the video Clint. The Minolta's are very underrated and usually the default lens I'll go for if I'm after a vintage lens in a particular focal length. I've been a bit busy for the last month but hoping to get another video done shortly. Thanks again for watching.

Nice review mate and nice photos you took. I just pick up one at the recycling shop for 2 dollars in perfect condition with UV filter and leather carry bag. I had a second thought but I am happy I buy it! Waiting for my adapter now for my Nikon D7500. Cheers, J.

I have this lense so that's why I'm here. Love the pics you got of it very much. I have the 50/1.4 so never took this one out. I got this lense in a bundle with a Minolta film cam off Ebay. I will test it out for myself thanks to your video.

Bought mine last night for 45 quid Inc delivery from Japan. Adapter from Germany. Can't wait to mount on my Fuji. Yeah I notice it's better not to use under sunlight. Apart from that it's a steal leans. Was looking for 1.2 one but they are 300 quid price range so this is no brained really. Nice vid btw

Great price for a great lens. Like you say the f1.2 would be lovely but at £300+ it's hard to justify the price for the tiny bit of extra light. Congratulations on the lens and I'm sure you'll love it :)

The Minolta Celtic 135 2.8 is excellent..and Very cheap..get a fine copy, stop down a bit, and you will be knocked out. I mean knocked out. Something to remember about the 58mm 1.4 Rokkor..on APSC it becomes an 87mm 1.4. I hope that sinks in.

Prices have dropped significantly on Ebay (September 2019). I bought my for about US$79 a few years back, but I will be giving it away at today's prices. So great news if you are looking to buy. i will keep mine and used it on my Sony A7. I had trouble with the aperture blades sticking went mounted on vintage Minolta cameras. It appears that the aperature spring mechanism on the cameras are not strong enough for this lens, or maybe my cameras are wimps. They seem to work ok with slower and less hefty lenses however.

How does this compares with 50mm f1.8 sony lens?
@mudgie069
@mudgie069 5 жыл бұрын
At f/1.8 the Sony for me has a little more natural sharpness and contrast however by f/2.8 I don't see any difference. However because of the slightly longer focal length and f/1.4 at 58mm, the Minolta gives you a look and feel the Sony just can't match. If you prefer auto focus then the Sony is the natural choice. I have both the Sony and Minolta and for portraits I prefer the Minolta but for general shooting like street and documentary I use the Sony. Hope this helps.

Probably the nicest thing is the way it renders the background when shot wide open and its sharp but not clinically sharp for portraits.

Anyone compare this lens with minolta af 50mm f1.4?
@mudgie069
@mudgie069 5 жыл бұрын
I've just purchased the 50mm f/1.4 and will try and do a side by side comparison soon. From my initial testing the 50mm f/1.4 is definitely a little sharper and better contrast at f/1.4 however the slightly longer focal length of the 58mm can throw the background a little more out of focus. I love both of them so for me, both are keepers and go for the focal length you like best.
