Great one, Jens; love these kinds of lessons! An unrelated questions: Is the natural 4 of a maj7 chord always considered an avoid note, even as an off-beat 'passing' note for example?
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
Avoic notes are not too important. The only thing you don\t want to do is to really land on it for a long period of time or give it a lot of emphasis in the melody. You can easily use it in a melody

Great stuff, as usual! From the first example it sounds like if you wanted to be motivic you could play something with the D half diminished in the first measure and then play the same (or very similar) idea using F half diminished over the G7. Question: what is so "magic" about the magic chord?
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I guess I didn't feel like playing it too similar, those types of melodic motifs can be a bit on the obvious side as well. The Magic chord is called like that because it is very flexible and sounds great for a lot of different chords. Here's a very old video on the topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jb6PdbV21NDWkqM.html

Jens , which thin-line guitar do you prefer ? The Ibanez , the Gibson or the Epiphone ? I like my German made Hofner very-thin.
@bronzewand5 жыл бұрын
The m7b5 was never really an issue for me. Where I have trouble is the dominant chord usually being a 7b9 and then resolving to a m6 I chord. Where the II and the V chord both use the b6 of the I chord I find it difficult to smoothly resolve to a m6 I chord
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
Well, you don't have to resolve the b9 of the dominant to the maj6th on the tonic. Just resolve it down to the 5th like it always does :)
@bronzewand5 жыл бұрын
@@JensLarsen That's what I usually end up doing! I've just never really been able to work that natural 6 in there in a nice way. Going to learn these licks over the long weekend! Thanks again for everything Jens
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
I think you can better resolve to the 6th via the major 3rd of the Dominant?
@JohnnyOskam4 ай бұрын
Quick question, is the i chord always a m6 chord? Seems like you use that a lot in your examples, but aren't there a lot of situations when it's just a m7 or or a m(maj7) too? In that case you wouldn't have to use melodic minor correct? It would just go between natural and harmonic minor right?
@JensLarsen4 ай бұрын
m6 and mMaj7 are the same thing and both are melodic minor. There can be places where it is a m7 chord, but 90% of the time that is then when the minor II V is not used on a song that is in minor but as a secondary II V
@JohnnyOskam4 ай бұрын
@@JensLarsen m6 and m(maj7) are not the same thing. You don't have to use melodic minor over a m(maj7), you can just use harmonic minor, since the 6th is not in the chord. So I guess your answer to my question is that usually in jazz, when in a minor key, the i chord is a m6 chord. I'm not knowledgeable in jazz. I'm coming from the neoclassical metal side. That makes sense about the m7 being used in secondary ii Vs. In classical music though, a lot of times after a V7 it will resolve to a minor triad and you can return to natural minor. That's why I'm asking about this.
@JensLarsen4 ай бұрын
@@JohnnyOskam Yes, I am answering from how a minor II V I is usually played in Jazz. I didn't have the impression it was very common outside Jazz?

Hello Mr Jenz, I would like to asked what is the core fundamental of jazz guitar melody? For example: Pentatonic scales both major and minor can be played for any pop, rock, modern jazz, and mostly blues songs. Is there any such thing as the 1 simple modes in Jazz where you can go with any songs just like pentatonic? I have tried to use ionian, aeolian and pentatonic to come up with a solo if it's possible. I do understand that if you playing jazz melody, you can't stay in 1 chords, means that whenever the the chord changes, the melody must shift into that key. Is there any modes that covers those changes? I am sorry if I confuse you due to the lack of education in music especially in jazz. Thank you
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
That is not confusing. The basic set is 3 scales and I cover that in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hKumdb2FqZPKZqc.html If you want to start somewhere then start with the major scale and the diatonic chords in that
@Shawn-hs8qk5 жыл бұрын
Would you ever use the C Melodic Minor over the G7? There's a bit of a rub. I notice quite a few jazz players that choose to use Melodic Minor instead of Harmonic Minor even though it does have a classic Bebop sound. Scott Henderson comes to mind.
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
I doubt if you will find a lot of players use C melodic minor on a G7, it will probably be D melodic minor (lydian dominant) or Ab melodic minor (altered)
@Shawn-hs8qk5 жыл бұрын
@@JensLarsen C Harmonic minor over G7 catches the 3rd of G7.......I'll have to try Lydian dominant. Had not thought of that. thanks!
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
You need to be aware of what sort of dominant it is. If it is a G7 that resolves then Lydian dominant is not the strongest choice, especially if it resolves to Cm.

It's kind of funny, I ran a search about minor 2 5 1 yesterday... Feel targeted again :D Thank you for what you are doing, it's really great! I have a question about the m6 chord. I realized that It was actually a m7b5 inversed, so no doubt we can use m7b5 arpeggio but what would be the other options? Could we handle it as a 7th degree (locrien) and play a minor 7 arpeggio from the 3rd (become root), major from the b5... etc ? Maybe a video about the m6 chords ? :D Thanks again...
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
Great! Yes the m6 chord is just tonic minor, so you can use a m6 arpeggio, a mMaj7 arpeggio and the maj7(#5) arpeggio from the third of the chord.
