"Minority Report" is both a top notch science fiction as well as a crime procedural. Scott Frank crafted Philip K. Dick's short story into a masterful screenplay. Frank later went on to write the screenplay and direct "The Queen's Gambit" on Netflix.

Oh my God, Samantha Morton's acting at 30:59 when he gets shot is some of the most incredible acting I've ever seen. You can just feel how the act of murder is such an incredibly traumatic psychic event for someone so deeply connected to everything around them.

Witwer (Farrell) said Anderton (Cruise) was in trouble because he found the evidence in his apartment that he was using substances, most likely illegal substances. Anderton only assumed Witwer set him up because he was previously in the building asking questions of the program and could not imagine why he could be charged with a pre-crime. He was just making a wild guess when he came across Witwer in the elevator.

If you enjoyed the themes from this movie, highly recommend you read the works of sci-fi icon Phillip K. Dick. His work has been adapted into so many amazing movies, like Blade Runner, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly, The Adjustment Bureau, Paycheck, and of course Minority Report.

Some constructive criticism: The sound level [both the narration and even more so the movie audio] is very low. Even with headphones it is hard to hear the movie and that makes it kind of uncomfortable to view the reaction. If the entire audio could be raised substantially that would make the reaction much more enjoyable to watch and easier to understand [as so much dialog from the movie is lost by not being able to be heard] Hope this helps. You know what's funny is the fact that a lot of people never would have believed in airbags or nobody would have believed in anti-collision technology but it's amazing what we can get used to after it becomes mainstream. Once self-driving becomes mainstream and 100 percent safe and there is science to prove that it is safer than an average person driving a car, everyone will get one

I love both this and The Fugitive. Those are two movies I never tire of watching.

This is such a brilliant movie and one of my favorite sci-fi thrillers. You should watch Spielberg's "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence" (2001), "Children of Men" (2006), "Under the Skin" (2013) and "Lucy" (2014) for more thought-provoking movies like this film. 📽❤️

It's also the humorous moments and over the top characters that really make this a repeat watch. John didn't recognize the doctor until he was under sedation, then the terror sinks in that he's strapped to the chair of a sadistic criminal with a grudge ( the whole prison story haha). One of my favorite movies.

Hey Madison, This vision of the future is so next level in this movie. From self-driving cars that use the sides of building to double as roadways. To interface teach that can scan your mind fro their thoughts and on the flip side implant new ones to create fantasies. Flying police cars, roll up digital newspapers. Near-instant body part replacements, artificial body parts. And the list goes on and on. THe only one I would leave off the list is the constant eye scans. But our cell phones can do that trick to have us tracked, so were screwed either way.

This story is based on a story written by Philip K. Dick, who also wrote the story Total Recall is based on, and is apparently the sequel to it (which is kind of funny seeing as Colin Farrell also starred in the Total Recall remake). John Anderton is supposed to be Douglas Quaid and Agatha is supposed to be one of the fortune tellers Quaid meets on Mars. Philip K. Dick also wrote the story Blade Runner is based on. Glad you identified Max von Sidow, finally. He was in all those Igmar Bergman films in the 60s and early 70s which are all time classics of film making. I'm sure he made a pittance in those compared to what he made on some later blockbusters. Note, he was the exorcist, father Maren, in The Exorcist. He died a couple of years ago and I was surprised he was still alive till then. I thought he was 80 years old in The Exorcist but he was only in his 40s! With that rugged, Swedish face it seemed like he never aged over 40 years

I love Spielberg's playful gags. Like at 35:05. She puts the eyeball down and you hear the ol' "shock" piano sting, ... and then you see the eyeball is sitting on the keys of a piano. The cheesy zoom seals it.

Tom Cruise’s story arc on struggling with loss was brilliant. The pre-cogs were named after mystery writers. Dashiell Hammett, creator of Sherlock Holmes stories Arthur C Doyle and the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie. You Should read her novels. I knew Agatha was gonna grab Tom Cruise from the pool but Spielberg still managed to scare me!! Love how they used Schubert’s music when Tom was browsing the images early in the movie. This is one of S/F "documentaries" and my favorite Spielberg's movie. There're many sanctions for actions people didn't do or didn't make any harm to nobody, in all human-made laws. On the other side, many people have no sanctions for the worst deeds. Nice reaction. Can you react on "Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis?

Critics like Roger Ebert called Minority Report the best sci-fi film of the decade, and I agree. The concept of Pre-Crime is original and masterfully done. The scene with the spiders is classic Spielberg. I also love the jet pack chase through the apartment blocks. I was surprised it wasn't a big box office hit when it came out but then considering the dark subject matter I can understand why. The whole surveillance-state "thought market" setting is bleak and pretty confronting.

Amazing Tom Cruise movies... Born on the 4th of July, Edge of Tomorrow, Rain Man, Oblivion, A few Good Men. I think most of his films are thoroughly entertaining and great acting. IMO

Max von Sydow's best role as a villain is in Strange Brew (1983).

Two westerns you'll want to see are The Culpepper Cattle Company and The Long Riders. Culpepper is a coming of age film set during a long cattle drive with numerous veteran actors, all of whom are excellent in this. Long Riders is more fascinating, with brothers playing the roles of brother outlaws, including the James brothers, the Youngers, and the Fords. If you haven't seen these, you're in for a treat. The soundtrack for Long Riders is by Ry Cooder and is well worth having. It's directed by Walter Hill, a pretty good one from back in the day, whose other films are also worth a look. Other than those, I'm guessing you've already seen Lonesome Dove--masterpiece.

Excellent comparison with The Fugitive. I can see why you like The Minority Report more since it is more thought provoking. Kimbell knew someone else killed his wife and was just looking for him. John had the added complexity of not knowing who kidnapped/killed his son, not knowing if he was going to kill someone in the future, AND having a 2nd mystery of Ann Lively to figure out at the same time! I found The Fugitive to be more suspenseful and satisfying since Harrison Ford is more of the "every-man" and Tom Cruise is ... well, Tom Cruise. In The Fugitive there were so many moments where it seemed like Kimbell was going to get caught. Like you said, no one can catch Tom Cruise, his arms give him super speed (lol). Anyway, excellent reaction and post-analysis (my favorite part) :)

He should have kept Sean in the pool instead of putting him on the edge, but this did help solve Agatha's mothers murder and free Agatha and the twins. She probably knew all along that John was coming because of his son's disappearance and knew that John was going to solve the case and save her and the twins otherwise she could have alerted the police in the mall instead of walking him to Leo Crow and Laura's house and him captured.

These self-driving cars are different from the ones in real life, I think, because they coordinate with each other and work as a system, I presume. In real life, the AI just tries to react and drive like a person, independently in isolation, but if everything were part of the same system in which every car's destination is known, then they can be coordinated much better and more safely.

What they know for certain is that all of the would-be murderers have been apprehended and dealt with. But what they don't know is whether any innocent people have been wrongfully punished, and there are people who don't want anyone to know. The title of the movie is the flaw in the system that certain people are trying to hide. John didn't know about this at first, but he'll want to find out.

"Edge of Tomorrow" - Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, excellent movie if you haven't seen it. And Cruise's latest Top Gun film "Maverick" - was flawless. Both worth seeing. Enjoyed your reaction and really like your thoughts post reaction. Thx.

My favorite moment from this is when Anderton slams Colin Farrell up against the wall in the elevator and then points a gun at him and he says "Put the gun away John...I didn't hear a red ball.." And then the alarm goes off and his expression towards Anderton changes to this face like "holy shit...you really were gonna shoot me you son of a bitch.."

I hope we get to hear the long story as to why these were filmed but not uploaded.

We never find out who killed Anderton's son. That's part of the tragedy of it, and the price we pay for NOT being arrested for crimes we may or may not commit. The fundamental conflict in any legal system is that, with humans being fallible (part of the point of this movie), we can err on the side of letting some guilty people get away, or we can err on the side of punishing some innocent people for crimes they didn't commit. In reality, of course, both things happen a lot, no matter what we do, but we still have to choose whether to emphasize freedom or security.

A concept like pre-crime is very likely to come about in society using AI. Organisations, politicians and private companies are going to market these products and systems as if they are a flawless, and latch on to the mistaken belief that AI is neutral because it is data driven. But it isn't true, because you only get out of an AI system what you put into it -- much like a person. If you put in flawed and biased data (which is what our criminal data is, unfortunately, because we flawed humans maintain it) you're going to get AI systems that are flawed and biased.

Hey Madison, I don't think Lamar Burgess was remorseful at all. I think he did want to spend the reminder of his life in jail so he toook his own life. I don't believe there is any arc to his character sinec we focus on his so little in order to have the plot twist at the end. Just my 2 cents in the discussion of this awesome Spielberg flick.

Yet another futuristic technology with dubious applications in real life is transparent displays. Who would want to use one of those when a normal opaque screen has far better contrast and does not potentially interfere with your examination of images (or reading text)?

This film is amazing, one the best sci-fi films ever. The world envisioned, the technology, the performances, the colour palette, the visual effects, the editing, Spielberg on his A game. The main setup (why would he kill someone he's never met) is predictable and couple of scenes haven't aged well, but there's so much creativity and craft on show, and it's nice to see Von Sydow play a villain. Criminally overlooked.

We're really not that far away from policing thought. We certainly police speech in certain ways that go beyond the immediate reaction of those around us, and I mean in a sinister, organized, systemic way.

On people's cell phones the Facebook app is installed as bulkware, and even if you do not use the app it still collects meta data and sends that back to Facebook. Advertisements that you see on websites are sent to you based on this meta data that Facebook sells to third parties, that's why they're so scarily accurate. As you travel during the day your phone is sending a signal to various cell towers, and your location can be triangulated that way, even with location turned off. Facebook keeps a record of your daily routine, they will even know when you wake up each day, since people usually check their phone. Just slight movement of the phone, such as picking it up, can be determined by geo location and cell tower triangulation. So picking up the phone and going to the bathroom is known too. A smartwatch even aids this info gathering even more, by seeing your heartbeat change, so they know when you're moving and when you're not. Plus how long you sleep too. It's crazy just how much info an app, phone, or smartwatch can learn just from cell tower triangulation, and even more crazy how much people are tracked and monitored every second of their lives. Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, KZfaq, Instagram, and tons of others all collect meta data, and either sell it or use it for their own purposes.

Well, if you're going to prioritize the crimes that the precogs predict, murder would definitely have the highest priority. I think they can see all kinds of things, but murder is what really gets their attention, naturally, over crimes such as jaywalking or opening lemonade stands without a permit (which gets higher priority these days in real life than ever before).

I thought Max von Sydowkilled the son, to turn the main character’s focus on pre-crime and kind of make him the poster child of pre-crime. What could be more compelling about the possibility of pre-crime than it could save the life of a child? But it’s been a looong time since I saw the whole movie.. I too shudder at the thought of our government having a pre-crime division, but what what if they just used it to stop the crime and decided not to arrest or incriminate those who have not yet done anything illegal. Yeah, probably a pipe dream, I know.

You hit the main question of this movie in the first 5 minutes. Can you arrest someone for something they haven't done yet? And the discussion between Cruise and Ferrel's characters presents both sides. "Why did you catch the ball?" "It was gonna hit the floor." "But it didn't. You stopped that from happening." Because of the Precogs (at this point in the film), they could know a murder is going to happen without intervention (most of the time, hence the title). But then it leads back to can they be arrested? They haven't actually done anything wrong now, because of your intervention. If this were to ever happen for real, this very discussion would be the only thing on people's lips for years. Edit: But also, John and Lamarr were only able to change the vision because of their knowledge of it. But what would you think if your phone rang and you answered to "Hello, this is the (Your City Here) Police Department. You are hereby under notice that 15 minutes from now, at 10:52 PM, you will have murdered (Victim name here), and will be arrested by police showing up 5 seconds later. This is your only chance to change your fate." If someone's VERY intent on killing someone, they could move it up. Or do it later. How many times will police have to respond to a potential murder to find they held back, but then they continue getting "calls" about the same attacker/victim/location?

I think the music kinda sucks in this movie, i'd say a darker tone would've suited it better.
