Minoxidil is a medication used for the treatment of male-pattern hair loss. It is an antihypertensive vasodilator. It is available as a generic medication and over the counter.
Minoxidil is scientifically proven to improve hair growth and potentially help men with male pattern baldness regrow lost hair. In the tests used to secure FDA approval, minoxidil was primarily tested on the top of the scalp and crown, resulting in a common belief that it only works on these areas.
Minoxidil hair regrowth results work by improving blood flow to the area in which it's applied. Apply it to your scalp and it can potentially improve the supply of blood and nutrients to hair follicles, improving hair density and increasing the rate of growth. As such, there's no reason minoxidil shouldn't work for a receding hairline.
Also, it does stimulate hair growth, although scientists aren't quite sure how it works. Minoxidil is available as Rogaine or Theroxidil, or in generic form effectiveness: Minoxidil works for about 2 out of 3 men. It's most effective if you're under age 40 and have only recently started to lose your hair.
While the exact mechanism of action for minoxidil the active ingredient isn't actually clear, it's believed to work by partially enlarging hair follicles and elongating the growth phase of hair. With more follicles in the growth phase, you'll see more hair coverage on your scalp.
Increased hair loss, one of the most publicized side effects of minoxidil, is often the result of hair follicles rapidly moving through the hair growth cycle and shedding before an anagen phase. There are also side effects of minoxidil that can occur from excessive use of the medication.
Most studies indicate that the results from minoxidil usually start to show after six months, with few or no visible results in the first three months of use. There are also studies that don't show any results after three months, indicating that minoxidil can take some time to start working.
Minoxidil is a Health Canada and US FDA-approved medication for hair loss in men and women. The drug is marketed as 2% and 5% topical solutions. This over-the-counter product is considered safe but should be used with caution. Furthermore, minoxidil is an orally active vasodilator for the treatment of severe hypertension.

Hello Dr. Gaunitz! In your video, and other videos on KZfaq, it is stated that once you start you can't stop. Does this mean stopping minoxidil after using it will undo progress from using your method - (AKA getting proper nutrition to the follicles and using DHT blockers and everything else)? Or will it just go back to what it would have been without it, (which hopefully will be very good anyway just using your 3 part method). Secondly, I can't find information on why Minoxidil restarts a new hair phase from the beginning. If as a vasodilator, all it does is get more blood to the follicle, and therefore more nutrients, wouldn't it just improve existing hairs instead of making new ones that push out old ones? Seems like there's something going on that the industry isn't telling us... I'm not afraid of the shed, and I'm encouraged that that means it's working. I just wish I knew more about why that is and how that works with your method. Also thirdly, should I implement fully your method for a few months first before I start Minixidil? I'm worried opening up the blood vessels will allow even more DHT to bind to the follicle receptors if I do that first. THX for all your work! It's a prodrug so it's needs to be metabolised by the sulfotransferase enzyme to it's effective form minoxidil sulfate. Only around 40% of people have high enough of this enzyme that will be good responders unfortunately.

im using the big 3 , finasteride, minox and dermaroll and let me tell you, i have nearly transplant like results, i had the classic male patrern baldness with 2 canyons gowing towards the back of my had, basically both have nearly filled up, i went from thinking of shaving my head to being almost full head of hair, i think finasteride done most of the work and gave life back to the almost dead hairs

My hair is falling out just from damage. My dermatologist told me I could temporarily use the men’s 5% full strength to get my hair growth back. Specially where the front is reseeding. The box says the opposite of this. Is it true that I CAN in fact use the men’s 5% at the front of my hair line and since my hair loss is due to damage.. after 3-6 months of using this can I stop this and be fine once I’ve worked on getting my hair HEALTHY again since I don’t have an underlying medical issue.

I used 5% minoxidil once or twice a day, if I could remember to do it twice. The hair will seem like it’s shedding more at first because it is, but that means it’s working. It took 4 months to start noticing results, and I used it for a whole year. And yes, I used it all over my entire hairline, meaning my temples and slightly lower, and also above the forehead. If you are experiencing thinning not due to damage, then you must continue using minoxidil indefinitely if you want to maintain the results. Since my hair wasn’t thinning due to anything hormonal or genetic, when I stopped using minoxidil, my hair was still thick. I stopped using it a few years ago and haven’t had any problems since then. Although… I do have an allergy to minoxidil, so it made my head VERY itchy. I hope I won’t ever have to use it again.

It depends - It can help stimulate hair growth if you have already blocked the reason for the hair loss which is DHT if you have receeding hair line and if you have family history of hair loss. So you have to take DHT Blocker and use the NutraM serum first then use minoxidil as adjunct to the treatment. You also have to consider the length of time that you've been losing hair. Has it been more than 3 years since you're hair line started to receede?

I started using it at 58 and it made my hair much thicker after a year and it’s gone a bit wavy as well, really thickened up the front corners. I use foam once a day . I think hair loss with older age has other factors like the follicles just running out of capacity as the body ages and winds down, it’s not the same as male pattern baldness from DHT, i think its called senescent hair loss, ( Hair cafe did a vid on it) but minoxidil is working for me at the moment at 60 and bizarrely some of the grey is going, so maybe the melanocytes have been restarted as well . The next step would be combined finasteride minoxidil like Maxogen from Minoxidil max,

From what I understand you will go back to your normal rate of loss over time. In other words minoxidil just slows down the process or is used to maintain what you have remaining and in some cases promotes more growth- but this new growth is minoxidil dependent meaning it won’t last long if one day you just stop using it and if you stop you will just go back to losing hair again. Minoxidil slows down hair loss significantly almost maintaining and even increase density but only under the drug otherwise you will just be on the same balding path

@@Narci55ist this is false and true at the same type. This is applicable for hair on your head. Not on your face. Once the hairs on your face are terminal they're there forever because facial hair is dependant on testosterone and doesn't fall out lile the hair on your head does.

Hello doctor, My hair type is silky smooth and there are no hairloss/hairfall (except daily normal hairfall per day). Randy Pompey I would highly recommend staying on both at least temporarily. You can’t really come off minoxidil once you’ve been on it for more than 90 days. We can wean you off overtime but if you’re looking for results I would make sure that you’re getting them both and then try to wean off after that.
