Although I was a big fan of the Duschesnays and their 'modern' approach, watching this again after all these years they look so stiff, the lifts were almost clumsy and were 'upright' most of the time. Klimova and Ponomarenko were by far the best couple, they could even compete today and grab a top5 spot. Their Albertville free dance is still one of my favorite ice dance routines ever.

Just sharing my unasked for opinion...They were decent skaters but this program especially is so filled with "Torvill and Dean" moves that T&D were using on their professional circuit and had used in earlier competition programs that it was not only obvious Christopher Dean had choreographed it but it was also boring moves wise. Their speed is impressive and their lines are pretty but thats about it.

I don't understand why a team known for pushing the limits in ice dance picked West Side Story as their big moment free dance in a home country Olympics. I get wanting to play it a little safe after the Mirror Image dance went over so poorly, but this is just entirely conventional. The last lift and ending pose are pretty effective however.
@Ian.D.
@Ian.D. 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Unfortunately, I see it becoming a trend; it's not uncommon for skaters (least of all, ice dancers) to take less artistic risks in an Olympic year. We've seen it happen again and again (so much that I've made peace with myself that we'll see dated and uninspiring music in Beijing 2022, especially from teams not known for their original choices to begin with).
@paulstarstarpaul5700

@@Ian.D. I agree that many try something more conventional in the Olympic year, but I honestly don’t really blame any of the dancers or think it’s necessarily bad. I mean the Olympics are the biggest event and the skaters have time to try things out in the years before. The Olympics aren’t the place to try something out it’s the place where you use what you have learned and trained, perfect it and at the Olympics dance it flawlessly. Why would you do something new in an Olympic year which could resonate bad with the judges or doesn’t work perfectly?
@Ian.D.
@Ian.D. 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulstarstarpaul5700 Oh, I agree! I think I would be cautious too if I were competing. As a mere spectator, though, I would appreciate some innovation, not necessarily in an Olympic year. But I'm in the minority anyway because I find 9 programs out of 10 redundant and uninteresting. I watch figure skating despite the music, not because of it.
@paulstarstarpaul5700
@paulstarstarpaul5700 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ian.D. I can understand your opinion even though I don’t have the same problem. I don’t know but maybe ice dancing doesn’t really seem to change from an innovative standpoint because it inherently is very much about classical dancing similar to the „real“ dancing on the parquet floor. Something I personally really enjoy, because it makes it really perfectionist when it comes to edges and expression when you compare it to pairs and singles where especially in singles jumps seem to become the single most important factor with expression and measure loosing more and more importance and only being a mere side note (at least it feels like that sometimes). However even though these advantages give ice dance it’s uniqueness it also might keep pairs and trainers from trying new things and using more unconventional styles of music or steps. Also the very strict regulations restricts the skaters in some cases. Although I agree that there could be more themes used than the „love story“ theme is still by far the most often used theme and it really wears off even though it seems to be well received by the judges. That might be why it doesn’t change that much at least from a choreographical standpoint, (because technique really evolved in the last decades even though I honestly don’t see the improvements anymore so I have to trust trainers and friends on this part)
@Ian.D.
@Ian.D. 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulstarstarpaul5700 Agreed. Dance is the hardest discipline where you can detect the technical advancements but even an ignorant fan like me can tell the difference between a 2020 routine and a 6.0 one (or a very early ISJ, say 2006). The evolution both in terms of technique and artistry is breathtaking, it almost looks like a different sport.

It’s great that they were able to create this much excitement-with this sloppy, scratchy, and tentative FD to pedestrian music. Literally, nothing about this program stands out, and I can only imagine the frustration Usova/Zhulin felt, learning that only 1 of the 9 judges put U/Z above this hot mess. This program is filled with derivatives of the moves by Bestemianova/Bukin, which I think was very smart of Chris Dean-because, like Bestemianova, Isabelle’s basic skills and lines weren’t as refined, and these moves definitely concealed her weaknesses. When competing against technicians like Klimova/Ponomarenko, this really was the only way to go…I am sure.

The three couples in Albertville on the podium were very good but they choose different styles of music and then choregraphy.The russians were more classical and the costums were beautiful and brought a romantic touch.The style of the french was more modern but they brought innovation in their skating.

What a scandal? There was a heavy hierarchy ( russians the first since a long time) in this sport with the juges who were found of classical style of dance and the reason why the couple choose the style to dance to have chance to win and not for the pleasure.Modern style was not appreciate even there was difficulties in their program.The Duchesnay never won the gold even they added innovation in their programms.They never claim anything about this. The rools have changed and the difficuties have degrees now and the dancers loose a little bit expression.It's very difficult to juge this sport to compare with athletism!!!
@timothyhh
@timothyhh 4 жыл бұрын
@@pascalepinault2131 Except the hierarchy had a bit of a wrench thrown in it at 1991 worlds where the top three shuffled around throughout the event with D&D eventually winning. Order was probably restored a bit at the 1992 Euros, but D&D weren't there so it was still a bit of a mystery how they'd all stack up at the OGs. My problem with D&D here is that the programs were ordinary. Especially in the original dance where K&P and U&Z had different takes on the polka, avoiding most of the cliche polka-isms while still being very much polkas. Then D&D had the lonely goatherd. WTF? Chris Dean probably should've given Isabelle and Paul their money back for coming up with such stinkers, but he chose to start cheating on Isabelle with Jill Trenary instead.

This performance wasn't even the best as it could be if they train it better all the season. Unfortunately, she was injured before OI and then she caught cold.

Yes they were innovative but technically they were actually weak and was nowhere near the RussianS here. To be fairly honest silver medal here was a gift for them.

They were VERY lucky make it to the podium here. The Western-bloc judges REALLY held them up. If they didn’t have that extra push, they would have placed below Usova/Zhulin for sure and, possibly, below Grishuk/Platov.

@@nondescriptnyc Please check the way the judges voted . There was no " bloc voting " during that competition

@@user-lbrd Let me get this right: You simply assert I am wrong and prompt me to do my research while presenting absolutely no evidence against what I said-and I am supposed to just take your word for it. Reminds me so much of those anti-vaxers and anti-maskers that simply tell me I am wrong and I need to do my “research.” Oh, well…

I enjoyed this more when the camera angel changed from up in the rafters. Really difficult to see the different positions and speed over the ice plus expressions from back there 🫡
