For years I've asked the questions: "What are the earliest 9.8s?" "What is the earliest 9.8 for a Batman Comic?" "Superman?" "Wonder Woman?" "Thor?" "What's the Earliest 9.9 or 10 graded comic?"
Today I answer all of that and more. Join me for a special research project I've undergone compiling original data to present to you in a clean clear presentation. Enjoy!

Without doubt this has been my favorite MH video to date. The ample research, professional preparation and, as always, engaging presentation were all impeccable. A fascinating topic even to a CGI detractor like myself because it wasn’t as much about them and their service as it was about comics as important historical artifacts. The respect and reverence you showed to these rare gems is admirable and even though I know the effort to produce this entry was taxing, I hope you will revisit the subject every now and then. I love learning about the Golden and Silver ages and overall general history of the medium. I know there are plenty of YT videos on those subjects, but none with your levels of sincerity and commitment toward producing a comprehensive view in such an entertaining fashion.

Im even more impressed with 1987-1990 9.8s, and I consider 1976-1986 to very difficult to obtain. Anything lower that? Essentially impossible because up to 1975 they used pulp in paper! Good eye Magnumrex! That's one of the ones that wasn't pictured so I put a 9.8 label over the next lowest grade which was I believe a 7.0. Why people with the most rare 9.8s ever wouldn't supply a picture of their slab? I'll never know. Out of the 30 comics in this list I had to plop a "9.8" logo on about 4 or 5 (I know I had to do it for the first Solomon Grundy and I believe for ASM #1) over the next lowest grade as there are no pictures of the existing whale of a slab books. It's because its a sign of a pedigree! also keep in mind for some of these that I wasn't able to find pictures of the 9.8s - I had to find the picture of the next lowest grade and show the picture of that instead. that happened on like 5 or 6 of these

The paper used in the late 1800's publications had a higher rag content and they aged fairly well. Once the publishers went to a lesser pulp paper, the high acidity of the paper didn't age well. A typical pulp of the day had cheaper high bulk pulp paper, and the comic publishers had to use a higher grade paper so it would accept the ink. The high bulk paper in the pulps couldn't reproduce half-tones so they resorted to line drawings for illustrations. The ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #24 is proof positive that grading services can be greatly flawed. I can't believe a book with a rusty staple, edge toning, some edge image chipping and some minor spine tics could get a 9.8!?!?! Hopefully the owner of this book won't send it back for a re-grading. I've had tons of bronze and silver age books with much less visible damage grade at 8.0 to 9.0.
@MintHunterComics
@MintHunterComics 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing John! And don't forget 2 or 3 of the 9.8 slabs in this video, there's no pictures of so I had to find high quality imaging of the next lower grades. So some of those look lower and I took the 9.8 label at the top

@@radratcomics Those ones are legit too! so CGC doesn't dock points for writing if it's part of a pedigree or historical significance. If it was a kids writing it actually docks it a hole 2 points I believe. When you say "first" do you actually mean the "oldest"? I'm assuming that something like the Crackajack 1 wasn't one of the first things ever submitted to CGC (i.e. submitted when they first opened up shop), but is one of the oldest. Sorry for the silly clarification on my part, but just wanted to check. I suffer from "oldtimers" so you'll have to forgive me 😉
@MintHunterComics
@MintHunterComics 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn! So by that I mean the oldest and first 9.8 to appear of the census. So Batmans first appearance was in Detective Comics #27 but his earliest and first recorded 9.8 wasn't until Detective Comics #91! Crazy to see a 1944 book get a 9.8

How are some of those older books getting 9.8s with writing on the cover? I thought that deducted heavily for that?

@MintHunterComics 3 жыл бұрын
So that writing is what's called part of a "pedigree" if the writing can be traced to a notable comic shop of something of historical value it not only doesn't get docked for points but it actually can give it a rare "Pedigree" grade and. label. Now 99 times out of 100 writing on comics is from kids at the time. CGC docks HEAVILY for this type of writing
@brianketterer2444
@brianketterer2444 3 жыл бұрын
@@MintHunterComics This isn't entirely actually accurate. Writing may be forgiven and it has nothing to do with whether it was a pedigree or not. it's also not correct that 99 times out of 100 it's kids writing on comics. Most of the numbers in grease pencil or pencil/ink (you see on GA or SA books) are related to arrival dates and it was a very common practice at the time. There are pedigrees which show some of those marks as well as pedigrees that have store stamps etc. Pedigrees may be more noteworthy for having certain marks, but you can get a 9.8 with a date stamp, grease pencil etc and it does not have to be a pedigree. One of the most famous pedigrees -- the Winnipeg collection, has the owners name scrawled out in pen on the cover on many of the books. I wouldn't say every pen or pencil mark carries a heavy deduction either, that's misleading. There may be some deduction depending on the size, scope, placement and nature of the mark. The place where the comic book was bought isn't the determining factor on the pedigree, only was it 'original owner' in terms of the collection. Meaning the owner bought them as they came out and stored them himself (one owner) but the owner could have gone to multiple newsstands (often they didn't, but some times that happened or no one knows). There are also other determining factors for a pedigree evaluation, which someone like West Stephan (who commented here) who was one of the earliest CGC graders and currently a grader at CBCS and one of the most well known collectors of pedigrees, comics and art out there can shed true light on the pedigree determination process.

Is it me or did that All-American 24 9.8 look like a 6.5-7 at best? Looked like a bad staple, cover writing, spine roll, multiple dents and a very rough top edge. CGC has always given a lot of leeway to older books but that one looked like a really prime example of that.

I held that same Captain America #1 30 years ago. My friend was the middle man (for a very well known, now deceased dealer) in the sale of it to someone I also knew. An electrician who paid it off in installments. The price was $5000. There was some shady business with the book after all was said and done by the buyer. Insurance fraud type shady. The middle man handled the book too roughly and I saw the damage his thumb did to the book. To get a 9.8 it had to have been pressed. Lost a lot of respect for the middle man. Too arrogant with another man’s book.

It's very cool to see such older books being preserved but I'm calling BS on those 9.8s which leads to that CGC/auction house speculation... I'm seeing 7.5 to 9.0 conditions here based on my own CGC slabs of silver/bronze age books.
@MintHunterComics
@MintHunterComics 2 жыл бұрын
Don't forget I put a couple disclaimers that not all of those slabs were pictured so I ahd to find lower grade high quality pictures and superimpose the 9.8 label on em. I think 4 or 5 of these sadly didn't have the real picture so I had to do that for em

/no way in heck is that Crackerjack Funnies #1 a 9.8 - it has a number 6 in what looks to be permanent marker and something in black pen ink just above that, they gave it that 9.8 based upon the 'pedigree' but without it it'd be at most a 9.4

Nice video. But you're right, I DON'T believe in those 9.8.'s. Not criticizing you. I'm criticizing CGC. The thing is, yes, finding Golden Age books in ANY decent condition is awesome. Which is why before the rise of CGC, condition was a lot more forgivable with Golden and Silver Age books. The thing that is annoying with CGG and these Golden Age books is: I know that back in the day, they graded a little more liberally on old books. But now, they're hardcore. So, would any of those books get the 9.8 if they were graded now? I doubt it. I know I wouldn't grade most of those books at that level. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have them. But, still, by the grading rules, a lot of them have some rough edges. Color rubs, rusty staples....I'm not counting the date stamps. I know those get overlooked because they were very common. To make it simple, while finding ANY Golden Age book that isn't beat to hell, outside of a company copy, is rare and impressive. But considering the paper these were made out of....I have to question what CGC is calling 9.8. Reeks of collusion...

Good eye Travis! Thanks for your support!

Why do the pedigrees have writing on the cover?
@MintHunterComics
@MintHunterComics 3 жыл бұрын
Pedigrees have certain notations and sometimes stamps from major collections or shops that are considered part of history. If it's not an approved pedigree it can knock the book down a full 2 or 3 points!
