In this new video series we will explore the how the Minutemen were first organized in the early years of the Commonwealth. We will also review what arms and armor that they used in the first few years.

@@Andrewbaysura1 i like the combat rifle if it's given a short barrel, auto heavy receiver, and muzzle brake on it, great for urban combat. I typically go handmade when I can afford to tho. But even with mods that ammo is hard to come by enough of, so the short auto combat rifle is always kept on hand to be safe. Assault rifles I just give to settlers with auto recievers cuz they have infinite ammo.

I have to say, your organization of the minutemen militarily, especially with the use of the enlisted ranks and the unit sizes are very lore friendly! In all honesty, I've never seen anyone else turn the minutemen into a faction like this that is kinda stuck between that 1890s linear warfare and early WW1 battalion/regiment organization like they realistically would be! I love the lore you made for the combat rifle and assault rifle, they desperately needed explaining, and maybe you could add in some lore appropriate mods to add more variety. I would love to see motorcycles worked into the series.

The Fallout 4 Assault Rifle was just a wired decision. Because it was originally the 50 Cal machine gun. With the 5.56 going to the Chinese Assault Rifle. But for whatever reason, they cut the Chinese Assault Rifle. And Bethesda made the Machine Gun into the 5.56 Assault Rifle. This is also why in the base game, there are no weapons that are exclusively 50 cal. Only guns that can be chambered into said caliber. This however actually makes so much sense for the lore of the game. The vanilla Assault Rifle being a failed military design that was given to Massachusetts because of state’s low priority.

@@treyeaves1576 it's just so many weird decisions made by the designers. Using the name handmade for the AK style rifles. Pistol calibers in long weapons. Hiring a gun expert for just one day would have avoided these problems.

Nice. I really like the point about the laser muskets. Generally, it is not the most flexible weapon so it should be more of a ceremonial weapon. On the other hand, firing from a static position (e.g. the castle) is still viable. Good job on the video man.

@@nexbil01 when I played I got the useful crank mod for it, to my mind a energy weapon that has no extra logistical needs and a shit ton of stopping power would be a welcome addition to the minute men. also I wanted to keep with the militia style of the faction so I roll played that only the officers were personally trained, they in turn went to each settlement that was part of the faction and trained that militia (head cannon was their training was strong back, rooted, riffle man, refractor, sniper, concentrated fire, and bloody mess with their levels in each perk reflecting how long they were in training. they basically fought like actual minute men did. making a firing line and shooting till the enemy stopped sometimes with cover to protect them) and saw to the artilery piece there. specialists saw to the crafting and every minute man had a six shot capacitor it was a highly decentralized system but it was highly adaptable and didn't require the massive logistics teams that most other militaries did. to my mind that would give them the advantage. expansion was done via diplomacy not war, though they could be called together to take on big threats. it's really interesting to see how you went down the opposite path with a ceintralized system.

I mean this would actually make sense. If Bethesda actually gave Danse a fair story then he would definitely join and train the minutemen after being thrown out of the brotherhood.

In their games, Bethesda likes to add these quests that have no real good ending. The player has to choose what they consider to be the best of the bad options. Danse got caught up in such a quest.

I don't have a problem with the laser musket as a sniper rifle, but thanks to some mods I've managed to equip the Minutemen with the good ol service rifles.

My issue with the laser musket is that it looks like it should be a unique weapon but it isn’t. Personally I use post-apocalyptic homemade weapons mod. And use the the laser musket replacer to make the laser musket into a good looking post war weapon that actually looks like it would be massed produced by the Minutemen.

@@treyeaves1576 it's basically the laser bolt action pipe rifle. Good for settlers or for hunters. the bolt action pipe rifle is adequate at long distance if it's a 50 caliber but useless at short range in 38 caliber. Not what you want for the entire army

The laser musket is trash unless you have the 5 crank upgrade, a legendary version, and can maintain a good distance. Ok at best. I personally like the Militarized Minutemen Mod with Service Rifle addition mainly because it really makes the Minutemen look like a professional army. But this version you show makes good since within the lore. Hate the Assault Rifle as well, it's just ugly and looks 350 years out of place. Water jackets for machine guns were thrown out pretty quick after seeing how they did more harm to the barrel than good thanks to rapid rust, corrosion, and warping. In my fanfiction the Minutemen use the settlement of Vault 88 to produce brand new weapons and gear safely underground. The massive underground network provides a means to get new raw materials. provides good protection, and after an expansion project, can get the products to a secure location all without going above ground. Only intelligent settlers with the necessary skills are allowed to live and work there with their families. Lastly, despite Synth civil rights were passed only humans are allowed to live and work there as a safety precaution to prevent Institute retaliation.

militarized minutemen is great. From a pragmatic point of view it's the way you would go if you were a commander. But it's very generic. You change the patches and suddenly they're NCR infantry or enclave or brotherhood or some other faction. You have to strike a balance between the real and the fantasy. I mean no one is nuts enough to wear just a felt hat (or a pith helmet for the NCR) on a modern battlefield but in the fallout universe it makes some sense.

The problem could have been fixed. If Bethesda just made the Minutemen level with the player up to like level 50 or so. Instead of making all the Minutemen you call be level 1 with crappy pipe weapons for the entire game. I mean that’s works in the early game. But why couldn’t they get get better gear the more you work with them? Like as you get stronger. The Minutemen you call get access to things like leather, metal, and eventually even combat armor? Heck if you end up get to like level 40+ maybe you would have the chance of them spawning in with T-45 Power Amor. It would have definitely made you feel like your actually rebuilding the Minutemen. Like your helping them in the early years of a new Commonwealth superpower that looks like they could actually hold up against the lands numerous enemies. They don’t have to be the next NCR to do that.

Part of me things your right. But then that goes against the fact this was the first fallout game to have no level cap. It seems more likely a product of Bethesda’s bullshit streamlining of their game. Even though Elden Ring showed just how wrong that philosophy is. And then expecting molders to fix their problems.it just sucks.

A video on the commonwealth citizens is going to be interesting. Fallout tends not to talk about the lives of people living within civilization, but I've always wanted to know how people within the NCR live. Are people going to University? What kinds of work exist? I guess I'm more of an RTS guy than a pew-pew kind of person 😅

the NCR is a bit of a mystery as bethesda keeps changing what's lore and what isn't. I have in the back of my mind someone mentioning a university in the NCR though that may be just wishful thinking.

Nice. In the post-endgame portion of my playthrough, I gave the Minutemen green uniforms with their logo on the sleeves instead of all blue uniforms. That is because they are walking targets in the uniforms provided by 90% of the Minutemen mods out there. The mod Chosen of Atom by Niero has many modular options to give them (including all blue uniform and armor). And the armor looks like something that could be mass produced by the MM post-endgame (at least in my head canon).

The Blue of minutemen uniforms is part of the 'peacekeeper / local police' identity and is actually meant to stand out visibly rather than be camo for the most part though dark blue can work about as well as black for night blending.

A Possible Suggestion: After the Far Harbor Intervention and the occupation of Acadia, Soldiers stationed there found documents (intentionally) left by DiMA pointing out the location of Assault Marine Armor Deliveries from Before the War. After the document was found, Far Harbor Command issued a salvaging operation to claim those Sophisticated Armor Pieces. Many Pieces were found in good condition. Then, The bulk of the armor was transferred to veteran Minutemen soldiers to form the First Minutemen Shock Troopers that will spearhead any Minutemen assault in their future wars. While some of the armors are sent to scientists, engineers and industrialists to begin manufacturing of the new and advanced armor.

They are becoming a much better NCR on the East Coast... Love it! Really wish Bethesda would put out a remake of Fallout 4 (kinda like they did with Skyrim by adding much more content over the years) and add much more to the Minutemen...

Gotta say, I imagined this going a different direction altogether. My head-canon was that the Power Armor suits were recovered from throughout the Commonwealth, repaired and reconditioned from various pieces found in old depos, arms vaults or stockpiles. Repairs were conducted in large garages in military bases and the patched up and completed suits would be stored in secured depos. Same with combat armor. I mean it's kind of ridiculous considering you literally collect thousands of these during your average playthroughs. All in all nice work! I enjoy this series a lot! Keep at it!

I mean, if all the junk I collected in sanctuary were used, I'm fairly certain I could personally equip a thousand minutemen easily. That doesn't even count the junk at the Castle.

@@nexbil01 that's fair! It makes more sense from a lore perspective that weapons and armor would be in short supply, otherwise you'd just buid prydwen 2.0 with all the junk. All I was trying to convey was the idea of weapons and armor being made functional through jury rigging and patching up. The infamous laser musket being a prime example :) P.S. I'd started a game build where more or less following the same line of thinking for the Commonwealth army and Minutemen bases, before descovering your videos. That's why your work resonates so much with me! Kudos!

As a Gunsmith, I really appreciated Hugo K Stoner. Most wouldnt at a glance recognize all 3 gun designers in that single name. Also, What mod are you using for those medic outfits? I recognize them as a reskin of Piper's outfit, but theyre super neat.

I used a variety of mods but the main one is "we are the minutemen". the coat is the trench coat colored blue, the helmet comes from the classic helmets mod, the patch on the arm is tricky it comes from a mod called dicks pin up which is a mod for making glamor shots for female characters. I downloaded it for the arm patches they have the us flag, air force, medical, etc. If you try to use the patch for male characters it just turns the coat an ugly color. So the patch only works on female characters. So for the moment all my medics will have to be female till I can find a workaround.

I find these videos so interesting, especially since a lot of my "head cannon" about the MM is the same as the one in the vids. Like about the hats having hidden helmets inside and the new uniforms using BW. Also, thanks for using my mod! The one that retextures Jack Cabot's Lab coat. Anyway, great video! It would make sense to me for the minutemen to use laser muskets as a cheap way to arm people with a weapon that's got better stopping power than a regular rifle. Realistically, I'm sure a laser makes more damage than a regular bullet, and would be more simple for logistics. Also, considering the minutemen are trying to arm alot of people, the general theme would be I'd rather have 50 guys with laser muskets than 10 guys with laser rifles. Especially if they are on the defense, because defenders always have an advantage.

I think that the laser musket would be appropriate for hunters, settlement guards, maybe police or even army snipers, but for regular combat operations you need to be throwing lead or lasers down range in huge quantities.

Settlement guard would be the most likely to have them in quantity, as well as have 3 times as many per guard to pass them out in an emergency or have them stationed around at different fighting positions. Ideally you want more guns than people. Plus for the average person they are a better weapon than pipe weapons and probably almost as affordable, especially when the minutemen start selling or giving them away. They would also be great weapons to have to give to outer settlements for free to buff up their stock, and wouldn't really be a loss for the minutemen.

The Minutemen are the best hope for the Commonwealth, so it makes sense that they would be crucial into rebuilding society particularly a democratic one. The Minutemen protect everyone who needs it regardless of being ghoul, synth, super mutant or common people any other faction only protects their own interests not everyone. Minutemen may start off weak, but given time and recruitment they become one of the most powerful factions.

This is really amazing just exceptional I'm actually doing something similar with my FanFiction except it's incorporating more of a Navy feel and equipment and a more tense relationship with the brotherhood By the way I like how you turned the laser muskets into snipers I think that's the ideal use for them as strong precision weapons. Considering a good amount of their targets are heavily armored like mirelurks they would need something strong to punch through shell.

Now this is the lore that the Minutemen deserve! I absolutely respect the Minutemen and what they stand for, but I felt that Bethesda didn't flush them out well enough. I fully understand that they're just a militia force comprised of citizens, but there has to be more. Shouldn't there have been a side quest with the Minutemen to root out the Gunner faction, once and for all? Or, at least, take back Quincy? And Nuka-World shouldn't even be a discussion, since Minutemen should be all over that. The General leading a massive army of Minutemen past the Nuka-World main gates would've been awesome! The closest you can get to that is by bringing Preston with you or using mods. This video alone makes me wanna play as a Minutemen character again. Cool vid!

I think game designers tell as much of the background as they need to get their particular story told and anything else is left unanswered because they want story flexibility for the future or they just don't think it's important.

@@nexbil01 I suppose so. It would've been nice to have the Minutemen have a more prominent presence in FO4, instead of just being seen at a few checkpoints and walking around the Commonwealth. Like I mentioned, taking on the Gunners would have been a cool endgame quest.

I do like how ya explained the weapons and armor. I did see some comments about militarized minutemen, which is a mod I also use with we are the minutemen so that it has some variety. Would be cool to see a blue version of the militarized minutemen for more elite members or officers

One thing that bugs me about the 'we are the minutemen" mod is the lack of rank insignia but it's such a complex mod that I feel that I cant really complain. The mod author already did so much

not really. I mean I probably watched way too many gun specials on the history channel before it became a reality tv channel. But fallout 4 had so many sins that I felt it needed to be corrected or at least explained away.

@@nexbil01 well regardless I find the inclusion of certain details (although perhaps unintentional) pleasing. One example is that during the design of the M1 carbine the initial designer wanted his name removed from the weapon, much like your version of stoner (also a nice reference). And the inclusion of “campaign donations” being included in the adoption of the service rifles is ringing eerily similar to current US military adoptions in the last ~5 years

@@nexbil01 the assault rifle is actually air cooled those fins on the back of the water jacket are actually forced air cooling fins (like a Lewis gun). It’s incredibly dumb but it’s what they designed (god it’s so stupid)

@@iseeyou709 I once had a crazy idea for a quest involving the constitution and the prydwen in some sort of aerial battle. citizenship for robots does not work at the moment. Although there are some remarkable robots like codsworth and curie, most are just walking tin cans. They'll gladly walk out into traffic if you tell them to without a second thought. It might eventually make for an interesting video involving the railroad however.

This was so well done, everything about it was truly marvelous. My only alteration would be to unit structure. While imperative that the minutemen hold a professional standing army, it makes sense that some militia elements would still exist; people have work to do on farms and in factories so having a proper citizen-soldier integration ensured a healthy population of reservists not tied down by full time military service (possibly led by/trained by a designated officer from the standing army?). Just thought it would be an element that remains true to the roots of the faction. But I cant state enough how nice it is to see you do justice to a severely underutilized faction, thank you

I've said this again the minutemen was a very good idea, but was executed badly, but you envisioned what the minutemen could've been very well! I like the idea of garvey still having some influence even if he's not in charge, or danse being the one who trains them, and thus having a purpose! I think something that would've been cool, is instead of the minutemen only giving you mortals, it would've been cool, to be able to have a aquad of minutemen follow you, the only problem being that they can't be revived, But they can always be replenished with new recruits at other settlements or the castle. Well done video indeed!

The thing that is funny about the Laser Musket is that its crank handle was supposed to power the shot, so it didn't require ammunition. That would have made the gun make more sense.

@@nexbil01 nice, nice. That's what I always felt that the minutemen had over other factions; the flexibility to be everywhere. Sure the railroad know how to cover their tracks, the institute can avoid a whole manner of things underground and the brotherhood can sit pretty and flex high in the air. but over and over again their faction is whipped off the face of the earth in an instant due to having all their eggs in one basket. Where The minutemen; yes indeed have a main base, but it's not their *ONLY* base. Even if the castle falls as proven in lore they can still operate half as good without it.

Hello! I can say that this series is really really good fleshed out. What started as basically fanfiction now seems legit story with all the world building. The weapons in fo4 are too restricted honestly. I think the 308, 45, 5.56 and 10 mil cartridges should be the most diffused in the fallout 4 commonwealth seen the vicinity to the ocean and climate. Or even the more powerful 7.62 over the more balanced 5.56 would do. Picking them as the main arms was the best decision. Even though the 'assault rifle' should have been used for the least equipped militia part of the minutemen rather than the professional army with light machine guns. Laser musket was sure something a sniper would use, one charged hit but powerful. How do you think they'd deal with the climate and laser weaponry? The artillery could have trolleys and railways to move them along the howitzers. A point for different equipment than the capital wasteland. Often when I play I come across military skeletons with basically the thompson smg, I read they were more expensive to maintain (irl) than the fallout r91. I'm not sure if that's correct The next part of the every day life of citizens and wastelanders sure is as interesting. Do you take clues for the colonial history?

The designers leaned on the colonial history of Boston a bit too much. The laser musket, the coastal mortars, the hats, etc. I know that they wanted to make the commonwealth distinct from the NCR but maybe it was a bit too much? This was my attempt to justify and retcon what we got into the story before moving the minutemen into more practical equipment like r91s and mobile howitzers and actual combat helmets.

Absolutely love this series I love the minutemen they are my favorite faction and I do truly think that in fallout 5 they will have become the East Coast equivalent to the NCR with a thriving government and powerful military the only thing I change in my personal head canon is instead of the assault rifle or combat rifle the minutemen stumbled across an old cash of AK-47s that the army had confiscated from civilians before the war and decided to use them as their mainline battle rifle rather than the combat and assault rifle which were not very good

I really appreciate your break down on the assualt rifle from fallout 4. It reminds me of the stoner 69/Robinson Arms m96, in so far as it was both a belt-fed and magazine LMG, rifle, and carbine in various weights and lengths. It was an actually okay weapon, but was chambered in .223 and very heavy as a carbine.

I think most people would have accepted the assault rifle as an LMG but for some reason bethesda turned it into an assault rifle. You had 2 perfectly good assault rifles in fallout 3. But what I really could not stomach was the 45 caliber combat rifle.

@@nexbil01 I headcanon that military grade weapons are harder to find than in game (no leveled list) unless you're a group with your own manufacturing, and simpler weapons are easier to maintain. So the local militias that make up most of the Minutemen are armed mostly with bolt-actions, pump shotguns, and revolvers. The Combat Rifle serves as a light support weapon like the BAR. Major Minutemen garrisons are more heavily armed, with the R-91 rifle or old M16/M4 series, with the Assault Rifle filling the light machine gun role it was born for. High tech weapons are generally sold off for more cheap gear.

@@nexbil01I have more beef with the Assault Rifle than the Combat Rifle. I imagine the Combat is a family of weapons with different chamberings and uses based on the same action, like the extended Kalashnikov clan of AK/PKM/RPK/Saiga/etc. The game just needed to change the name from Rifle to Carbine depending on the round. Makes perfect sense for a rear echelon weapon, though in Fallout it'd probably be better in 10mm, to share ammo and magazines with either the pistol or submachine gun. As for the Laser Musket, it visually has the same barrel as the Laser Rifle and Gatling Laser. I headcanon that it's just a way of making a working weapon out of a broken laser. The system that feeds fusion cells doesn't work, so they jury rigged a mechanism. So I have it doing the same damage as a laser rifle, but with a "bolt-action" rate of fire. The most important thing I give the Minutemen isn't weapons at all... it's _bicycles._ There are plenty of roads and trails in the Commonwealth, and bicycle infantry were a real thing in the early 1900s. They can travel faster than leg infantry or even horse cavalry, and that speed advantage goes up with distance. They can also carry more than leg infantry. And bikes are relatively easy to make and train people to use.

I'd be interested in watching another breakdown, starting from the beginning, about an *Institute* victory, and a Survivor-led Institute/Minuteman coalition force. Speaking logically, most of the Railroad probably just ends up either dissolving or joining the Minutemen some time after the Institute is destroyed, and a Brotherhood victory would result in Maxson demanding the Sole Survivor use their position as General to fold the Minutemen into the Brotherhood's command structure, likely resulting in Brotherhood dominance over the Commonwealth, but an Institute/Minutemen coalition would be very interesting.

Turn based volley firing could overcome the restrictions of the laser musket. We don't really get to see certain weapons full potential due to game restrictions, and the player being alone for the most part.

I think the assault rifle looks less like a SAW and more of an anti vehicle machine gun like the 240B or L so the weight would match up to the real world machine guns however, it fires a 5.56 rather than a 7.62 so I’ll just go fuck my self

I love role playing that my minute men like to salvage from their enemies. So i love using institute weapons cuz it's a blue laser. Plus the automatic version which might be weaker than a standard laser rifle, the fire rate is faster. I dont like making them too OP. So i like crafing basic blue protectrons for them. Honastly they do really well surprisingly 🤣
