Two officers disagree in a nuclear bunker.
MINUTEMEN is used with permission from Jason Nolte. Learn more at imdb.com/name/nm5762997.
Lewis and Wil are two career officers who man the controls of a nuclear ballistic missile in a remote bunker. They enjoy a cordial if surface-level working relationship in a thankless job marked by self-described "decades of monotony."
But one evening, the alarm sounds to arm and fire the missile, though it's not followed by any confirmation. Locked in a silo without any communication with the surface, Lewis and Wil face a choice: complete their mission, even if it means ending society as they know it, or disregard the alarm as a malfunction. They must act fast and in unison. But as the seconds count down, hidden agendas rise to the surface and tensions reach a boiling point, as the fate of the world rests on their shoulders.
Directed by Jason Nolte from a script by Travis Milloy, this charged dramatic short begins with two officers settling into another day at work. From the personal effects on the desk to the air of everyday wariness to the pleasantly mundane chitchat, it seems like another day on the job. But this is no ordinary job. It's in the bunker of a nuclear missile, and Lewis and Wil are the ones in charge of discharging it if called for.
The well-crafted storytelling takes pain to set up the ordinariness of the work environment, along with Lewis and Wil's relationship. Lewis is the older, more experienced officer, and Wil is younger, quieter and more deferential. But that dynamic is challenged and tested when an alarm goes off -- and Lewis and Wil must work together in synchronized action to discharge the missile. The procedure is challenged, however, when the alarm isn't followed up with confirmation and communication is cut off with the surface.
Lewis is convinced that they need to act, but Wil isn't, leading to a pressure cooker situation and a battle of wills. Actors Terry Serpico and DeJuan Johnson embody their characters with understated yet pitch-perfect performances. As the pressure mounts and the tension ratchets up, their facades of civility crack to reveal the adversarial tensions bubbling underneath. They battle over what to do, as their decision could determine the fate of humanity.
Building up to a taut, pulse-pounding climax, MINUTEMEN has the compelling suspense of a thriller, but it also resonates because the crux of the conflict comes from deep within the characters and their values and commitments. They may wear the same uniform, but they have very different ideas of what it means to serve. The film ends with something of a detente, but Lewis and Wil's working relationship will have changed forever, along with other ideas and values they took for granted.

Something like this actually happened, but it was the Soviets who thought that they were under attack and ordered to launch. Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov made the decision not to launch, disobeying direct orders, because he thought that it was a mistake. He was right. We now live in a world that didn't have a nuclear missile exchange between the US and USSR because of this one man, whom most people don't know of.

Died in 2017. Briefly mentioned in the news. There was another incident when DOD systems detected incoming missles over the North Pole, which turned out to be a flock of birds. Or course, we've learned our lessons and now have or are developing hypersonic missles that leave even less time to evaluate a threat. Progress!

He wasn't in a silo, his instruments were flawed and showed what look like multiple ICBMs incoming. He was supposed to relay his detection of those incoming missiles, but didn't. Because he thought it was a mistake. The US was conducting a massive nuclear war-game called Able-Archer at the time. Yuri Andropov was incredibly paranoid that the US under Reagan would preemptively launch a nuclear strike against the Soviet Union. We came very, very close. You might even say we've been on this altered time-line since 1983. We're on the timeline (or one of its offshoots) were Petrov didn't follow his orders.

This short is more powerful than many-a-netflix show wishes it could be. Can’t thank you enough for building the tension to a crescendo, but not devolving into a trite action scene… Wil just sits at his post, absolutely in control of the situation. Great writing, acting, all of it.

BRILLIANT!!!!! You kept us on our toes for 14 minutes!!! Amazing actors in such a drastic position! The naive part of my brain says that we should all get rid of such MASSIVE Destruction weapons...At the same time, no country, no nation, and not a single human on our beautiful planet deserves this! ENOUGH!

Who will convince North Korea and China and Russia and Iran and ensure they stay free of nuclear weapons? Rememember how Russia signed an accord guaranteeing the security of Ukraine in return for disarming Ukranian nuclear weapons? That guarantee as we've learnt meant nothing. In every generation there are people who are 100% convinced that complete disarmament is possible. Every few decades some event brings proof that it isn't. We don't have to seek war but we shouldn't be unarmed either. The real world doesn't work like 14 minute movies.

Excellent. They are one of ten locations that control that missile group. There are backups for everything in this system. Not all of the 10 have to do their jobs to launch the missiles. Also they can be turning keys all day and if Command and Control isn't setup to launch nothing happens. The only way a launch happens is from the top. Doesn't really make me feel better but there it is.

People often say good shorts should be made into feature length films, and some probably could - but the beauty and genius of this (and others) is the world building, character arcs, tension and resolution the film-makers can achieve in just a few minutes. I think if anything needs to change, it's some big budget, feature length films that should be reined in and polished down to shorter, more coherent works.
