This is the 100 ft Miracle Gro Soaker System. It's also available under several other brand names at Lowe's and Home Depot.

Setup is easy, and the hose seems to work well.

Best way to uncoil the hose is to temporary put a 5 gallon bucket or something on one end and unroll the coil. It will lay out straight and not in loops. Just pulling it apart like in the video will give you those coils. Hope this helps a little.

Great video. Just purchased the kit under a different name. The key here is to keep it out of the sun and in the winter (if it freezes in your area) take it out and let it dry and store it somewhere out of the sun.

Thank you Papa. Uber respect, I just bought one this year and watching what you just did will make it a whole lot easier. I'm going to use the same layout method that you did but I'm using containers, I use 42 liter gray containers from Walmart. I'm going to line them up make small little Groove to hold the hose and do exactly what you did ....... Two thumbs up. 👍🏿👍🏿😊😊 PS there is one thing I would do. Before I connect the hose I would run it to make sure the water is cool because I'm using containers and I don't want to cook my roots😮

So glad to have found this video. I echo previous comments - this is the nitty gritty of how to get the system to work. I have also observed that the hose is efficient to about 80 feet. I am now experimenting with another technique - I have created a closed hose loop by bringing the end of the hose right around to the beginning, where the garden hose feeds, and I am actually putting water into both ends at the same time, very low pressure of course. This seems to have solved the problem of getting the hose to seep along its full length. I will be applying mulch and covering up as much of the hose and fittings to protect from UV as possible. Thanks again.

I have found that if you unroll it like it was on a spool it’s so much easier to work with. Your results may vary with the type of hose & temperature.

When you prep for the following year, mix in regular soil to your clay soil. Will soften it a bit and allow more moisture to spread since it won't be as dense

When you replaced the leaking coupling where the garden hose connects to the soaker hose, how did you get it apart? Does it easily slip out OR did you cut it off from the original coupling? Also, when stored away for the winter, I'm going to have to take it apart at the Ts. Will this go back together for the next season without leaks? BTW, this was an excellent video. Thanks for doing it and sharing your experience. We appreciate it!

is your system still holding up? I bought them but i am seeing people having leaks after a couple of months. I plan on burying mine and want to know if they will hold up to time?
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Ours has never leaked at the joints. Only where the water hose connects. That piece is kind of garbage and you might seek a solution to that. The rest of the setup is flawless. If you bury it as well, it should hold up fine. The sun is what destroys these things. You can't expect much durability at this price point

@@AppalachianDIY One of the biggest issues with leaks at hose ends is that the male end has nicks in them. Take a flat piece of metal and sandpaper and a few rubbing the male end on the sand paper on the flat metal you will soon see if there are any nicks in it keep sanding until all the nicks are gone.

maybe it's also a good idea to use some cat litter (Bentonite clay) it holds on better to water and nutriments.. my garden is also mostly sand and the use of a soaker hose and bentonite has done miracles for me.. And it's cheap..:-)

could you put together an update 1 year later... I just bought one and plan to install it this weekend.. .my one question would be if you got too much water between your rows in your walking area where you connected the T joints. I was going to connect it with an old hose
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I thought about doing that as well. You would need some different attachments to do that because the soaker hose slides inside the T joints. You probably would not be able to successfully do that with a water hose. You would need a larger hose to slide over the joints, and use hose clamps to make sure there are no leaks. That was my idea anyway.

It seems like you could connect those going across with solid vinyl drip hose.

OK, I installed my soaker hose in my 4 x 12 raised bed zig zagging 3ea. 15' rows ( total hose length, 46 ft.). Seeems to work OK except for the last 10 Ft. Less dripping than the front end. But my main question is long long do you run the water? I let it run for 30 mins and depth of moisture was about 6".
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 жыл бұрын
My moisture level was pretty equal across the whole way, but obviously set up differently than yours. Shorter hose lengths help equalize the flow. As far as how long to run, I think it depends on how your is setup, your base water pressure, and hoe close to the roots the hoses are. When I finally was satisfied with my watering schedule, I set on 1hr 45 min in the hottest part of the summer, 3 days a week. Eventually a 4th day, with a shorter watering time, because it gets so humid and blistering in North Carolina.
@Klink52
@Klink52 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick response. I'm in SO Cal so no humidity issues but it does get warm in July/August. Will be adding mulch to my beds to keep in the moisture.
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 жыл бұрын
mulch definitely helps. We used mulch to hold the moisture around our cucumbers. In addition to the soaker hose, this seemed to be the prefect setup for the humid summers
@Klink52

Still happy with the soaker hose? Any leakage?
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Held up just fine all summer, and fall. No leaks to report. Leaving it buried until spring. Once its warm enough to start tiling the garden, will dig it up and check that all is OK before putting it back to use.

I've heard they can clog up (calcium build up) after a single season and become useless.
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 жыл бұрын
could be. But even at $25 per season that's not bad
@Vector_Ze
@Vector_Ze 7 жыл бұрын
Surely that depends on the specific water in use. Hard water logically would clog the hose more rapidly. I guess I'll find out. I have pretty good well water which isn't hard at all compared to what I've seen in other locations. And I'll be installing my hose tomorrow. It would be sweet if it lasted more than one season. Longevity is probably also affected by the type of soil. I hope that spammer, "Ye Ada", doesn't respond to me. Fooey, if this were my video I'd delete his crap.
