The impact this had on the country's spirits cannot be overstated. In the decade leading up to this game the US had: lost a war; seen a president resign in disgrace; witnessed the collapse of the steel industry; suffered through 2 oil embargoes; lost an embassy and seen dozens of its diplomats held prisoner for over a year; endured runaway inflation; been subjected to its greatest loss of global prestige in history; and lost faith in the Great Experiment of the American Republic. The country desperately needed something *good* to happen - preferably something unexpected and visible on the world stage. For the price of a coach's salary and six months worth of food and lodging for 20 young men, they got it. No policy decisions. No wars. No tax implications. This was far more important than a hockey game. It was, to be blunt, America, in microcosmic metaphor.

Additional context: * The Soviets had won the four most recent Olympic gold medals in men's hockey, and had not lost even a single Olympic hockey game since 1968. * In a bunch of "friendlies" (warmup games) leading up to the 1980 games, the Soviets DEMOLISHED everyone they played, including this same U.S. Olympic team, less than a week before the start of the games, by a score of 10-3. * Just a few months before the start of the 1980 games, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. The Cold War was VERY real and an omnipresent concern in both countries.

“Do you believe in miracles?! YES!!!” has to be one of the greatest lines of commentary in sports history. For me as a racing fan, that’s right up there with “20 years of trying, 20 years of frustration, Dale Earnhardt comes to the line to win the Daytona 500!”

I don't think people realize how much of an underdog story this was, i'll try to put in context 1) In 1979, the Soviet union beat the NHL all star team (multiple times). They were without a shadow of doubt, the best hockey team, not just in the world but ever assembled up until that point. 2) The Soviet team had been training together since 6 or 7 years old, the Americans were assembled roughly two months before. 3) At the time, American college hockey wasn't even on the same level as other major junior leagues in Canada and europe. This was essentially the equivalent of a Div 3 college football team, taking on an NFL all star team and somehow the game has geopolitical ramifications. Even as a non American, it's the greatest moments in sports history

The movie "Miracle" is the best hockey movie ever made. The producers decided that actors couldn't be convincing players on the ice, so they cast actual college-aged players & trained them to act. I highly recommend you watch it, especially because it gives you the historical context.

@@SquidCentauri you should also know. The guy who plays Buzz Schneider in the movie is actually his son. He saw the ad for it and went to audition, his dad didn’t want him to, his mom said go. When they found out it was Buzzys son and he played hockey, he was in. How fucking cool is it to play your dad?! Also, they don’t mention that because of the Cold War there was talk about the US not participating in the summer games. So the Soviet was threatening not to play the winter games. They ended up coming and playing an exhibition game before the Olympics and wiped the ice with team USA 10-3. So they went into this game smug af and thinking there was no way they were going to lose. Lots of people thought it was just going to be a replay of the exhibition game.

The goalie shutting down the best hockey players in the world for TEN MINUTES is most impressive part. It's incredible how long ten minutes can seem when it's ten minutes between you and a win. It also proves the point what sports can do to your emotions and that, as it turns out, a HOCKEY GAME changed history.

As a Canadian who lived in a hockey rink (mostly) , and being their closest neighbour and mostly friends (lol), we were cheering team USA. It was a trying time in the world, and it was great to see them beat the USSR, and then on to the gold medal game. My brother was playing NHL hockey at the time, and professional players were not allowed to play for their country in those days. Even those men were cheering on USA.

I was working in an ice skating arena in 1980. What a lot of people don't remember is it the Soviet game was on Friday night. They had to play Finland on Sunday, and the way the points were, if they lost that game, the US would not only have not gotten the gold, they would not have medaled at all! So I showed up to work Sunday morning, expecting to resurface the ice between the second and third period of our local double a team, (West Covina Eagles) but nobody was on the ice. Everybody was geared up, but somebody had brought a little 13 inch black and white tv, and both teams and spectators we're crowded around it watching the USA beat Finland for the gold.

Professional players weren't allowed in the Olympics until 1986. Most countries complied with this, but the Soviet Union got around the restriction by creating teams of full-time players who were supposedly in the military. They weren't real soldiers, but the Soviets claimed they were being paid for military service, not for being athletes. The Soviet hockey team really was that good. They would come to the U.S. and Canada and beat all the NHL teams in exhibition matches. Soviet hockey was less physical than American hockey. They just didn't play as rough. One thing I remember is that they almost always took the puck across the blue line under control. Most other teams would dump the puck across the line and chase it, but the Soviets would keep passing the puck at center ice until they had an opening. This took a lot of patience and discipline, which they had. BTW, the Miracle on Ice wasn't the clincher. The U.S. still had to beat Finland to win the gold, which they did, four goals to two.

@@SquidCentauri during that gold medal game, the US was down 2-1. Coach Brooks came in and said one sentence... "You lose this game, you'll take it to your fucking graves." Walking out the door, he turned one last time... "your FUCKING GRAVES." They went on to win 4-2.

@@efreshwater5 It was not a gold medal game since there was none. It was a round robin medal round. If USA had lost, they could have finished anywhere from 1st to 4th, depending what was the outcome of Soviets-Sweden game. As we know, Soviets pummeled Swedes, and took silver. So with USA losing to Finland, they propably had finished 3rg or 4th.

In short, Iranian "militants" or students invaded US Embassy in Tehran in 1979 in anger over the deposed Shah being allowed into US for medical treatment. The revolutionary government under Ayatollah Khomeini approved and for 444 days the diplomats and embassy personnel were held hostage, starting with about 66 people, with most females and African Americans released by Iran, until 53 (later 52) were left. Six more consulate personnel were hid in the Canadian embassy and were smuggled out of Iran (see movie "Argo"). Jimmy Carter ordered a military rescue mission that failed resulting in several American military deaths. Carter worked on a negotiated release but was not re-elected. The hostages were released the day Ronald Reagan became President. Even though it is 41 years later, there is no US embassy in Tehran.

Funny story, so the last hockey game I went to was the local junior league team's annual Miracle On Ice game, it's because the two players on that U.S. team from Wisconsin both played for the first iteration of the club. It's mostly to honor Gary Suter, who did so much for the local hockey scene and the other club iterations that the arena was posthumously named after him, but Mark Johnson comes around too because he coaches the Badgers and U.S. women's teams. But anyway, the Capitals always wear remakes of the 1980 Olympic jerseys that say "Caps" on them instead of USA during this game and then auction them off, but this time they went one further and forced the away team to wear replica Soviet jerseys that had their team name on it. Thought that was hilarious considering all the atrocities the Soviets committed, and knowing that as player but still having to wear it must've been real mind games! I told other fans and staff that they should've played the Soviet anthem for them and made the coaches wear those weird fur hats for more immersion, and a couple drunk fans even got a "Fuck The Commies" chant going😂😂

The one thing I love about this is the Russian players. I felt for them..they played the game and you could tell while they were amazing...their passion for just playing for fun was gone. Seeing the Russians watch the American's celebrate and enjoy an accomplish really put some humanity behind it...They wanted to feel that too. You could see in their faces they missed enjoying a win or even the game itself. Like any sport..it isn't just winning but about enjoy the game.

I know it’s not the same thing, but the only thing I can compare this to is the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where the USA beat Russia in a very long hockey game. It was a tie game and they had a long shootout to see who could score the winning game. I saw that game and it was very exciting and intense.

I think this video, while fantastic, sold short just how good this Soviet team was. Before the Olympics, they beat the NHL all-stars 6-0. Let me repeat that -- they beat the best players in North America, which includes Canadian players , *6-0*. Now, imagine a team of college guys who only met each other 8-9 months ago matched up with that team that beat the best players in the NHL 6-0. What do you think the result would be? (Well, the US team and Soviets matched up before the Olympics at MSG. Soviets won 10-3, and the blowout was worse than that score suggests.) That's why this upset was so massive, and that does not even dive into the historical and political events that made this event even larger.

A few of the USA players went on to play in the NHL, but I can't remember how many. Herb Brooks went on to coach for a few years in the NHL. Sadly, he was killed in a car accident at a relatively young age. I remember watching this game when I was 15 years old. I wasn't much of a hockey fan at that time (I was from Texas and there weren't even any teams in the state at that time), and I knew that everyone said USA didn't stand a chance. The USSR team was basically a pro team made up of Soviet military members who were only in the military to play hockey. Most of them had at least ten years experience as pro players, while the USA players were only college players. I think everybody in the country became hockey fans that night!! Announcer Al Michaels had the line of the century right when the game ended and he said "Do you believe in miracles? YES!!!" The movie Miracle (starring Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks) is well worth the watch.

Unless you were there, you can't understand how much was riding on this game. It was a period of time not unlike today. We had a weak president in Jimmy Carter, inflation, gas shortages, the Iranians had taken a number of American students hostage because they didn't fear us, and the U.S.S.R. was bent on world domination. The difference between then and now was our young people (of which I was one) didn't have romantic views of socialism or communism. I was 11, and lived 2hrs from Lake Placid, but I didn't get to see it in person. I did see it on TV. The win marked the end of America's dreary descent and the beginning of a better time. No, it was not hyperbole at all. It was a very real situation. You should watch Miracle, with Kurt Russell.
