He is clearly experiencing the temptation of the fearful self concept described so eloquently in the last chapter of the text. I hope he will find the true message of the Course, that the light he needs to shine away the illusion of the ego is already in his mind. It seems to me that certain teachers have made an interpretation of the Course with an undue emphasis on looking at the ego, and seeing its vision of the world as a hellish dream and our brothers as mere figures in that dream. Jesus teaches us throughout the Course that when we look at the ego from our right mind (without fear) we will see it as no more than a call for love, and any power we believed it had over us or out brothers will be dissolved through the forgiveness that allows us to open our heart to receiving and extending God’s love. Seeing the vision of the ‘happy dream’ as a sugar coating on the darkness that lies beneath IS the ego’s vision! Jesus is very clear that the passage into the happy dream is critical to our final awakening to Truth. It should not be confused with the ego’s tactics of telling us to seek for our happiness FROM the world. Ken may have said that if you’re enjoying the Course then you’re not really doing it, but I believe that if you’ve been studying the Course for years and you’re not feeling a deep hope of happiness growing in your heart, then you are certainly missing its message!
