Located on one of the highest points of the Punta Garrabo development in Zihuatanejo, the breathtaking Mateo House was completed by renowned Mexican architecture firm Zozaya Arquitectos (ZAR) in 2022. This residence offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the lush surrounding jungle landscape. From the outset, the owner desired a minimalist and clean design while still preserving the essence of vernacular and traditional architecture. The design inspiration for the house was a blend of minimalism and brutalism, with elements of Japanese design philosophy incorporated, particularly in the use of water throughout different areas of the house.
Access to the property is provided by a sloped road that leads to an outdoor staircase enclosed by stone walls, opening up to a central water courtyard. This serene courtyard divides the house into two separate concrete structures. To the left of the entrance is the private zone, featuring three bedrooms and bathrooms characterized by a coffee-toned parota wood screen and a cotton fisherman's net hanging rope. To the right of the entrance, highlighted by a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door and white deep sea coral sculptures, lie the social spaces.
The living areas, including the living room, dining room, and kitchen, are defined by local stone walls, steel accents, and Volcani floor tiles, creating a monochromatic grey palette that extends seamlessly onto the terrace. Adjacent to the infinity pool, there is a sunken seating space alongside a spacious barbecue area, where a stainless steel pergola with local tree branches and polycarbonate provides shade. The primary suite opens onto the infinity pool, featuring a two-sided waterfall edge that offers breathtaking ocean views. The pool was thoughtfully constructed around an existing tree.
The architect's challenge was to enhance the user's connection with the natural context in their daily lives. Thus, a water courtyard and terraces contribute to creating atmospheres of relaxation, leisure, and enjoyment. Water features play a significant role in the house, evoking a zen atmosphere and dividing the social areas from the private spaces, fostering a sense of calmness.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of Mateo House is its social areas that seamlessly integrate with the stunning natural landscape. The meticulous selection of materials and colors reflects the ambiance of the surroundings, utilizing predominantly grey and black tones with pops of color inspired by nature. The interior of the house is minimalist, allowing the attention to be drawn to the impressive outdoor views. Additionally, the residence incorporates sustainable design elements such as natural ventilation and green roofs, providing thermal comfort and reducing environmental impact. With its tropical ambiance, Mateo House is truly a refuge that allows for living in harmony with nature and savoring the beauty of the region throughout the year.
