Miranda and Donna, I thought of the two of you when I read this quote in the book, " Edward was neither a snob nor an insufferable foodie. He just liked to do things properly. He cared deeply about everything he created - whether it was the furniture in his living room or his writing." Both of you have graced us with your creative hospitality, whether it be with book reviews, instagram, writing, jaunts in the city and country, or culinary delights. Edward would be proud!

Hello Miranda, thank you for including my comments in the discussion of 'Edward'. There is now a comforting ritual and rhythm to my Saturday mornings around this time at the end of the month; I have jam and toast with a pot of Yorkshire tea as I catch up with the always informative CBC discussion. Thank you for inviting us from around the world to partake in a seat by the table. All best wishes, Jason

Thank you for another lovely and thought provoking book discussion, Miranda and Donna! I love the comments of Jason, Jenneth, Cristina and Julie as well. Dinner with Edward touched my heart in the same way as 84 Charing Cross Rd. How wonderful that both writers spent their time memorializing these two wonderful yet ordinary men who accidentally became such pivoting influences in their lives. I'm so happy that Frank and Edward will forever be immortalized in the pages of these respective books. Regarding Edward, Dinner with Edward reminds us that no matter how old one becomes, life still has great value and relationships are still important. I love the ending lines of chapter 15. " You saved your own life..... You were giving as well as receiving..... You touched an old man's heart." 😭

Such a lovely read for the book club. I would’ve loved to have been invited to Edward’s dinner parties knowing how much he enjoyed every detail of putting them together! I have to say that the Edward quote that most touched me was, “The secret is treating family like guests and guests like family.” I have a French neighbor/friend that used to put together wonderful outdoor dinners in her garden every year, on Bastille Day, with long tables and lots of friends and family (she didn’t like help, either). The setting in her garden surrounded by hundreds of flowers and lights strung from the trees made it all so magical. Even though there were 20-25 people, she made it feel very intimate and made us all feel like family. How wonderful that Isabel had the incredible opportunity to share such a special friendship with Edward and I’m so glad she shared it with us! Thank you Miranda and Donna. 🥰💐I always enjoy all your book club chats and look forward to next month! 📚

Enjoyed the discussion very much. I could relate to this book because I shared a great friendship with an older woman I met at church. Even when we lived in different cities we kept in touch weekly by phone. We shared a sense of humor laughing always about this crazy life. Sadly, I lost her several years ago and will always miss her. Isabel's friendship with Edward brought it all back to me. Thank you ladies for picking this book. Til next time, my very best wishes to you both.💕📚❤️

I also loved this book. One of the things I thought was interesting, was that I kept expecting Edward to give her marital advice at every dinner. He didn't, he used food his experiences, and treating her in special ways. Helping her to realize she deserved more. Thank you to you and your mom, so enjoyable! 🙂

This book was nourishment to me. Obviously the loving descriptions of the meals and the careful selection and preparation of the food was wonderful. I was also nourished by the story of Isabel and Edwards' friendship, Edward and Paula's love story, Edward's advice on living an engaged and authentic life and Isabel's ability to bring joy and love back into her life. As a born and bred New Yorker I also feel that this was very much a love story to NYC and Long Island. It celebrated the diversity of the city (both in the people and the neighborhoods), the small specialty shops, the grit (New York Post Newsroom) and the glamour (the designer floor of Saks - which is a beautiful, serene place to wander through even if you can't afford anything) and the beauty of Long Island. This small book brightened my days. Have a great weekend and thank you for another wonderful bookclub!

Thank you for this lovely discussion! I listened to your Tea and Tattle interview with Isabel Vincent a couple of years ago and have had “Dinner with Edward” on my reading list since then, so I’m happy you selected it for the Comfort Book Club so that I finally read it! I really enjoyed the story, and the mouth-watering descriptions of their meals. For me, the desserts in particular, for example this description of apricot soufflés in Chapter 2: “Edward had made us individual soufflés in little ramekins, putting them in the oven as we began our main course. He served them immediately after they were done, their puffy meringue swirls tinged golden brown and looking like the whimsical domes of some dreamy cathedral from a fairy tale, dusted with confectioners’ sugar and topped with freshly whipped cream.” For me at the moment, with three children aged 7 years, 4 years and 8 months, meals where you sit down calm and enjoy exquisite food and have conversations feel quite distant. (It is more like in The Diary of a Provincial Lady when the son Robin joins them for dinner: “I talk to both at once on entirely different subjects”). But, I feel very grateful and that (despite that I can be frustrated not to have time to write or craft or do other things for myself) I have what Edward describe in the end of Chapter 2: “A place in your head where you are at peace with your life, with your decisions.”

I read this book after hearing your interview with Isabel Vincent on Tea & Tattle, and I re-read it for the Comfort Book Club. Enjoyed the book both times. One thing that strikes me this time around is what a good role model Edward is: how to be a great host, how to chase your passions (in his case cooking), how to enjoy life, how to be a friend. I hope to be as active as he was when I get to my 90s.

Thank you, Miranda and Donna, for another marvellous discussion 💐 The whole concept of romanticising your life; taking pleasure and joy in the small everyday things is the main lesson I took away from Edward. This is also a way of life that I see you and your Mum lead. I'm trying a little harder to be more mindful, more grateful and more joyous. And I bought a red lipstick - I adore it! 💋

I’ve been reading some of the previous CBC choices and I really enjoyed this gem of a book. This was such a charming story and I am so glad that I searched your archives and came across this delightful discussion.

Thank you so much, I really enjoyed the discussion about this book and will have to seek it out. I listened last time and got a copy of the Country Child and enjoyed that quite a bit. Now for next time, Miss Bunckle’s Book by DE Stevenson is one of my favorite books by one of my all time favorite authors. I love the time period and the quality of her writing. In these days I feel that DE Stevenson’s books are like cleansing you palate. They are refreshing and clean. Also at first they seem so simple but then grow deeper as you move along. Miss Bunkle is funny and quirky and you grow to love her. Also there are more books about her and I enjoy the way her characters overlap in other books. Thank you for including one of my faves. 😊

I enjoyed this book very much. And I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself how much Edward would not have liked having me as a guest. While I loved the cooking and food descriptions I’m such a plain eater he would have been exasperated with my pickiness😊. But even though I would have driven him crazy, I would have loved having him for a friend. This was such a fascinating book about an equally fascinating man. Thank you Miranda and Donna for introducing him to me. And Isabel Vincent too of course.

I was a pastor wife. Hospitality is a spiritual gift. I observed how much we relax and are ourselves over eating together. I have noticed, tho, that in today’s busy society, home entertaining is on its way out. I think people are afraid home meals must be reciprocated. So sad. A lost art😢😢😢

The quotes where pretty much the same, but one that struck me that someone told Isabel "there are no coincidences". Thank you for another wonderful book choice and video. Honestly, I wasn't going to read this book because I thought it would be a very sad book about death. Even though it is about Paula's death, I found it was more of her life and how she influenced Edward's life in such a positive way. I feel Edward had such a passion for life because of his and Paula's relationship and that he naturally shared that passion with those he met such as Isabel, his neighbors, and even the young lady working at Staples that when Edward asked her if she liked poetry and she told him she loved poetry and her name is Paula. There are so many wonderful things about this book.
