Hello! I hope you're all having a lovely start to the week. I'm determined to enjoy the last few weeks of summer and have planned some fun activities to make the most of the sunshine. This week, my Mum and I had an impromptu picnic at an idyllic location, which I've been excited to share with you. I also started reading two new books over the weekend and I chat about my thoughts so far in this video.

Hi Miranda. I watched this Ripley Castle picnic episode again. I’ve seen it so many times, and I go back to it over and over. The mood it sets reminds me of my childhood and the lovely picnics enjoyed. It puts me in such a nostalgic mood. I’m so thankful for the work you have done through the years. Oh I love the village of Ripley! Your picnic looks delightful too. Living in Florida I so envy your being able to enjoy this beautiful day this way. Here we’d be on alligator lookout so near to the water and within probably two minutes we’d have been covered in fire ants lol. I’m glad the cows waited til you’d had your lunch. The castle grounds and gardens are gorgeous. Thank you for taking us with you💕.

I have to admit that I was envious of your picnic outing. It was so beautifully set out, inviting and picturesque. And the cow story, that was very funny. I know envy isn’t a good value to have as it can make one down hearted. But I have to admit I didn’t feel down hearted at all watching this vlog. It brought me such joy and has even inspired me to make a sponge cake at some point this week or weekend. The mini sponges are a good idea. I noticed you had the book ‘Emma‘ by Jane Austen on your picnic rug. Funnily enough I bought, by chance, nearly two weeks ago, a second hand book called, ‘Emma‘ by Alexander McCall Smith. It’s a modern twist of Jane Austen’s ‘Emma‘. I have to admit, I am thoroughly enjoying it. I know it’ll take me a while to finish as I seem to have so many books going at once. I wish at times I was a faster reader. I’m not sure, but have you read it? I don’t recall you doing a vlog about Alexander McCall Smith’s ‘Emma’. Anyway, as a suggestion, have you thought of doing a vlog on the modern versions (or twists) of Jane Austen’s or any other author’s works that you’ve come across that you highly recommend 📚

@@MirandaMills Yes, poor reviews certainly influence us. I have the set of Harry Potter books by Bloomsbury that I picked up second hand years ago. I’ve read less than half of the first book. I tried a few pages of the other books, hoping that I’d turn into an enthusiast like the millions of people world wide, but me and Harry just didn’t match, as disappointing as this is to say, as he seemed a good person. But Gilbert (Anne of Green Gables’ Gilbert) and I do match. It does sound adulteress, but that is not my way, but I do think he is just so respectful and good hearted as a male (and a good looking one esp. in the 1985 movie) that I’m okay to let others have Harry. Maybe a friend or the local library have a copy of Alexander McCall Smith’s ‘Emma’ to loan you, to determine if you like it. I like it so far. Alexander brings his humour, snippets of factual information and easy to read style of writing into the book. Maybe strong Jane Austen ‘Emma’ enthusiasts found it difficult to read a twisted modern version of ‘Emma’. I’m not sure. Anyway, if you do end up reading Alexander’s version, it will be good to hear your feedback. Look forward to your next vlog 📚

I am loving watching your backlist of videos since discovering your channel. Watching your outdoor videos reminds me how lucky I am to live in beautiful England and especially the North of England (my family home is in your neighbouring county of Lancashire). Hello Miranda…absolutely glorious is exactly what I was thinking. The lovely location and the scrumptious picnic food are perfect. Even the cows were a nice touch. I must say, I, too, went on a picnic on Sunday, however, my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches lacked a bit of charm. Lovely, peaceful video! By the way, your hair looks really nice. The book looks like a good read for me. Thank you.

Such a beautiful location and lovely picnic. I'm glad you were able to enjoy and share with us the clouds and clotted cream before the cow cavalry arrived. Gosh, if they march past there often, it's a wonder you found a clean patch for your picnic spread...I just finished China Court (loved it) and am eager to plunge into Margaret Kennedy's Feast. I'm surprised that cows are allowed to graze there. Quite picturesque (when viewed from afar!) The background music choice was very lovely, it reminds me of the Jean Yves Thibaudet's music for the Keira Knightley Pride and Prejudice

Loved every minute of this; the riverside setting was perfect, and your picnic looked delicious! The cows probably use that path every day to go for milking; they are usually gentle creatures, but rather intimidating en masse, I can understand why you moved! All those sweet peas . My favourite ... I can smell them from here ! I went for a walk today in Middleton Park , an ancient wood in South Leeds , and some glorious old oaks and sweet chestnuts . Sadly the house was burned down in 1962 .

I have wondered how long it would be before you found Ripley. We always stay at the Boars Head when we are in this area. The bus for Harrogate stops just outside. It looked like you had a lovely afternoon; but it was so sad to hear you talking about ‘last hurrah’s’ and ‘the end of summer’. I have to say though it has been more like October here the last week. The candles are out and the twinkle lights are on, can’t be long before the fire. The two books you are reading look wonderful.

I'd recommend 'The Far Distant Oxus' from 1937 if you've not previously read the book (and its sequels, Escape to Persia, and Oxus in Summer). Set in 1937 Devon.

I read it as well. I enjoyed the story, but I didn’t like any of the characters! That is a good author.
