Best line of the movie from Jennifer Holsten (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) to Sally Alexandre (Keira Knightley): "Well, Sally, I'll look forward to having your choices in life" That line, the full conversation is significant because its rare when those from well off backgrounds see or understand the struggles of others or see or understand how their actions and demands affect those further down the ladder. Nothing has changed.

Reminds me of the people mad at certain companies getting labor overseas. "You don't pay them what you would pay me". Yeah. Because your minimum wage is extravagant funds to them. "We should boycott and close them down!" The people actually working there? "Shut up! This is the best paying job I could ever dream of getting, why are you trying to threaten my livelihood?" People have to stop assuming they know best for others.

If you watch the film, it’s doesn’t. The film heavily explores the privilege of the white feminists compared with the black pageant girls. This is the American trailer so a clip has been cut out that portrays Kiera knightly being confronted by GuGu mbathraw about how she is judged by the white feminists and their lack of understanding on the race issue. If you watch the British trailer it’s in there. But I do highly recommend the film (it came out pre lockdown in the uk).
@ArtemisScribe3 жыл бұрын
It's so interesting to see how the little changes are made between the British version and the "international" *cough*American*cough* version of this trailer. They're small but significant, just to pivot things a little. For instance the British version has a moment of confrontation between Keira and Gugu which was honestly I think really important and sold me on going to see it when it was in cinemas over here and this American focused trailer has cut it so they can fit in more shots of Bob Hope which makes it look like he's way more important to the story than he is. Because he really doesn't matter that much at all. They're basically just going "Look! Bob Hope! You know who Bob Hope is right?"

The first black South African to compete and they don't even cast a real South African actress 🤦♀️ Edit: It's not just about authenticity, obviously actors often portray other nationalities. But if they didn't want to hire the real deal they should have at least cast someone who could actually do the accent properly since this one is terrible, and any South African will agree on that. 2nd edit: I know Gugu is half South African, but she's playing Miss Grenada in this movie. Anyone who actually paid attention while watching the trailer would see that another actress is playing Miss South Africa and that's who I was talking about.

I get that it’s acting but it’s important to note that the essence of acting especially a story based on true events is to portray it as close to reality as they possibly can . That includes having actors who actually sound like the person they are portraying .It would have been okay even if the actor wasn’t South African. However, they should have gotten someone with the ability to speak in an accent remotely similar to a South African accent because wawuuuuu that was very far from it ... it’s cringe-worthy to listen to . If your childhood dream is to compete and win against other women in a competition for a trophy celebrating your success at the genetic lottery and ability to keep to a diet so that your physical features match current beauty trends you should examine your childhood and the society which produced it. At any time (particularly in the past) women should be trying to ally and build coalitions to achieve things for themselves and each other not tear each other down like crabs in a barrel. Women's ideal body type (if there even is one)should be tall wiry and muscular with sharpened teeth to better carry, run, bite and do stuff.

Isn’t that the truth! Girls and or women competing against each other to be the best most perfect and what’s the trade off for the title? A narrower and distorted vision of female perfection. One that eliminates many to crown very few. And even the few can’t remain in that light forever. Especially if your talking about the world of modeling or beauty pageants. That crown covers you for that year until another is deemed more perfect. If there was a such thing then such activities would only need be held once. But since it’s based on the must superficial, those attributes are ever changing. Which means you can never be comfortable even if you are convicted the ONE. Yeah, your IT or the ONE as I said until they find another. With each and ever going on of these spectacles, the bar gets higher and higher making it harder and harder for women to compete fairly with other women without extra help, women and girls that watch get further and further away from the dream of being one of those women and men have more an more expectation of what a woman should be and put too, more and more pressure on women. Leaving themselves out of corse.
