I can relate-when I was little, I thought I wanted to live in “Olden Times” until I learned about antibiotics and anesthetics.

As someone who always love reading about Ancient Rome, (and I made a video about this a few weeks ago), I would have loved to see that era, (to use it as an example). But if you weren’t rich but just a commoner it could be a miserable place to be, which we tend to forget at times since we mostly only read about the elite in history, and hardly about the common man

I am pleased to see confirmed by Dr Janega that though i am self taught as regards history I was not greatly misinformed in or by my reading. Thanks for this video. you tell an old man like me that his lifetime hobby (history) was not a waste of time

Everyone is complaining about the interviewer's accent (in kind of harsh ways) but I think it's more a sound issue, the microphone just isn't picking up his voice well. Dr. Janega seems to have no problem understanding him on her headset.

Careful that it is a fair maiden and not a fair prince. (Get the reference? 😉). Glad you found the video. And do consider sticking around I got some interesting episodes coming up

This is a really interesting interview, but I would wish for the interviewer to articulate more. The fact that I'm not too familiar with his accent only adds more relative frustration, because I am genuinly interested. Do work on that, mah dude. It makes a big difference

I watched only 7 minutes. As a non-native speaker it is very difficult to understand. Dr. Janega is speaking fast but very clearly and easy to understand. I couldn't understand what you were mumbling. If you want to reach a broader audience make sure people can understand what you are saying.

Alan, at times i couldn't understand you, neither could KZfaq's algorithme. At the end it was fine, so you can speak quite clearly for an international audience, but you need to make a consistent effort.

Thanks for the feedback. I am trying to adjust my distance from my mic. And I think zoom is a little to blame as well. As it can be a hit and miss sometimes with the quality. (As you will see in this weeks episode)

Would a Burgundian know he’s a Burgundian or know that they’re apart of a larger Frankish kingdom? Especially if you’re from an area that wasn’t warred over in your lifetime. Did they just make announcements at mass that this area and everything south of here was annexed after a battle 400 miles from here?

We discussed this in our episode about Nationalism as well. And as far as the private citizen was concerned borders didn’t really matter to them. It was just a way for the nobility and king to gather taxes. Forexample if you were from Notingham in the Uk or York you weren’t british or English. As far as you were concerend you were from either Notingham or York. So borders didn’t really matter for the peasantry until the 19th century when nationalism took off. We discuased this in our episode on Nationalism as well actually

@@wellthatagedwell2716 That's a theory, a nonsensical theory! The English archers were peasants who trained in case they were needed to serve England in time of war! People knew what country they were from, they shared a language, culture and history! You are regurgitating a communist theory which was created to undermine the nation state. France may well have cracked down on regional languages but when you speak of England you speak of a country with borders that had been drawn more than a thousand years before the nineteenth century!
