Misha Collins (Supernatural, Roadfood) joins us in the studio this week to share his experience growing up with adversity and having to learn to be comfortable fitting ‘inside of you’ and not giving concern to standing out.
Misha goes on to talk about his experience shooting PBS’ Roadfood and the different life wisdom he was able to draw from that time simply from slowing down, in comparison to the go-go-go schedule he had to keep up with Supernatural.
We also talk about his relationship with Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, the fake manufactured drama some fans project, and his experience with anxiety attacks on set.

Yeah, I really consider the cast. They were doing 2 cons a month sometimes while filming.. so that means for every month they might actually only have 4 days off of work (assuming they shot 5-day weeks). That’s insanely brutal for anyone…. And Misha also always makes the effort to show up at the less commercial and overseas cons too. If someone in Hollywood tracks these things, Misha might hold a record for most con appearances in 12 or 24 months whilst working as a series regular. Yes, the cons really enabled the show’s fan culture, yes the cons are creating unimaginable dividends by the incredible access they provide - there are more hours of hilarious, sweet, touching, insightful and sometimes cringey con footage than the 327 hours of the series,… but the sacrifice and commitment from the cast to make that happen blows my mind . It makes the cast even more incredible. Also, in the city is one thing, but traffic getting into Van from Surrey/the border is awful. I’m stunned that Misha didn’t choose to have a a crash pad in Burnaby.

Now imagine jared and jensen... Misha worked only 25% of their working time plus much less interviews, photo ops etc... It is interesting that he has problem with j2 having driver when they had 14-16 hour days and j2 acted 5 days from 7 and rest was for cons and interviews...
@jessicawinchester158
@jessicawinchester158 2 жыл бұрын
@@daidreen7452 He may have been in a lot less episodes, but when he's in episodes his day is just as long as theirs. At least in the later seasons. Also he never said he had a problem with them having drivers, he just mentioned that he didn't. It's also probably a lot harder for him to have a driver because he was crossing the border every day. But also he should have had a driver because was a main character and wasn't just a recurring or guest star.

I love that Misha distinguished the difference between an anxiety “attack” vs an actual panic attack. Anxiety attacks technically aren’t a thing but you can get what I call a pre panic attack and your anxiety is very high. True panic attacks are debilitating and scary no matter how many times you’ve had one. Anxiety, depression and panic disorders disorders suck so very much.

Misha is right about their unique fan interactions...but he is also modest about how the fan base burgeoned due to him beginning GISH as a world wide charitable event. Misha's broad twitter presence made a difference, then Jared started his charity Always Keep Fighting which fought the stigma of mental illness. These two outreach projects built a base of acceptance and opened the door to increased convention attendance and larger SPN viewership. Netflix and TNT reruns took SPN beyond the CW crowd and conventions being posted on You Tube spread their personalities and caring beyond the show. Fangasm books added to the human stories from cast and crew. More and more came to appreciate the excellence in every aspect of the show and the cast. Their talent, generosity, respect and inclusion keeps their fan base loyal and growing. Thanks for having him on.

Oh Misha, you didn't 'luck into' an incredible fan base, you all CREATED and perpetuated it! the way you have all engaged with fans, enjoyed the fans and treated them well. Ive been to other conventions and been around fanbases of many different shows, but the SPN fanbase is DIFFERENT. You attract what you project out into the world. SPN family is kinder, not as critical and more accepting than most fanbases I have been involved with. Its a family I am happy to be a part of, and they have been welcoming of newbies like me who only discovered the show during the pandemic. And i truly regret not watching the show when it was current! I'm not sure how I missed it, it was right up my alley. But so glad I found it on 2022.

I also went through a time when I had anxiety attacks. I appreciate that Michael often brings this kind of thing up, because it happens to so many people. My experience is that it is a build up of unresolved fears/anxieties over your lifetime that eventually take on a little life of their own inside you. You can think of it as a fearful inner child. It’s a sign that you are not honestly facing your feelings. And when we get older it might happen more because we have more lifetime of feelings we ignored. Your body is trying to tell you stop, plz pay attention to your emotions.

Michael and Ryan, I am a new subscriber and I just wanted to say thank you. I've finally been approved for disability and have accepted that I will not be, so much, the active person I used to be. Listening to you and your guests over the last few weeks has been really soothing--also to my cat, who was a January rescue and new indoor moggie, and is healing from trauma as well. I love the laid-back style and the fact you're so friendly and anecdotal, Michael, without "taking over" from your guests. It's a rare talent. I used to watch Smallville when I stayed up with my (then) infants and toddlers (Smallville had a rather late-night slot in Australia) so I've especially enjoyed the Welling episodes, and Misha is a favourite as well. Anyway... you hear this a lot, I imagine, but your podcasts have been very helpful. :)

Came for Misha but will stay to listen to you! I'm really sorry you've had anxiety attacks and know all about that.. I actually wanted to go into acting as a kid but when I got to middle and highschool, I started having anxiety attacks from pressure, bullying, and not being able to make/keep friends. I never got help and still haven't do to self hate unfortunately.. I always wonder what I would've done in life if I would have gone into acting if I didn't deal with this issue..I still fantasize about acting. Thank you for opening up and giving me a reason to open 💙

I love Misha. He's such a genuinely nice and "real" person. Castiel was, and always will be my most fav character on Supernatural, even when they f**ked him in later seasons and kept making it worse and worse every season 'til his "demise" and "ending"... Which in my opinion is where and when he was screwed over the worst.. which unfortunately kept right in line of their previous history of screwing worse and worse, and ended it on the worst... Again, I apologize if you like/liked it, and/or disagree with anything I've said at all, that's totally cool and I totally respect your opinion and genuinely think it's awesome that you like/love it or anything/whatever. This/these is/are just my opinion(s), so if you could respect my opinion(s) as I do yours, that would be greatly appreciated it. I would like to know everyone's opinion(s) though, so please don't hesitate to comment on this if you'd like. Hope everyone has a happy, healthy life!

IMO they should never have 'humanised' Cas and there would've been more scope for him story-wise as an Angel. He was a powerful force and as much as knowing Dean opened his eyes to other possibilities as far as humans were concerned, he should have stayed as is. Coming when called otherwise he would be in heaven battling to keep it together till God/Chuck was sorted or dealt with. But in making him human, losing his wings/grace/powers at one point, there was nowhere for him to go - the storyline let him down in the way it let the others down as they all played off each other.

It actually was mishas wish... If you watched him on cons or in interviews - he wanted castiel to have more human and his ending was his special wish - he admited to ploy it with writer behind jensens back... Listen to his post 15.18 interviews... And i agree with you - all those pandering to shippers made castiels character much worse...

@@daidreen7452 he didn't plan anything behind Jensen's back, Jensen knew about 3 months before the episode, it was Robert berens wish, he told Misha before Jensen because it's his character, what does Jensen have to do with it? They don't need his approval, he's just an actor & it's not even his character, yet they still asked him if he's cool with it which i don't get why they felt the need to but he was very happy about it when they told him & was very excited for it, watch his interview about it with the EW

Yes, the Destiel angle at the end was stupid. In a lot of shows they feel the need to be politically correct and "gay up" some main character, which , like here, kills the whole deep friendship angle, which i loved. Friendship is so much stronger than attraction, and they should have gone with that. The whole end dialogue was weak, to my mind. They should indeed have played more on the "stong angel-Castiel", but the human side of him was just as important. Good writing is to know how to interweave the two through the show, and sometimes by the end of their onscreen lives, both Cas and Crowley were just made to be too "flat". And those were my fav characters!

@@jackiedragonfly2461 Yes, they threw away such an opportunity for the character's sacrifice to be all about the 'love' one has for the other. Even if you take into account as an angel...human tendencies or no...that love could've been a genuine love for mankind and the strength/compassion show by Dean's character- but instead it was stated as a homosexual declaration of love which turned everything on its head and made SPN and the ending all about that.

This is so surreal, both Misha and Jared really remind me of Adam Lambert (mannerisms) and Jensen reminds me of Freddie Mercury at times (that wisdom in his eyes). Back when Supernatural first season aired, I was trying to find who else was around from the "Atlantean" family line (like what Tolkien called Numenor) - though I didn't exactly know the definition of what would actually represent "Atlantean". I knew it had something to do with the knowledge about soulmates, and it was lost because people are scared another disaster will happen if we remember what we can't remember? But Apocalypse just means Revelation, in itself... anyway, turns out that "Atlantis" is the formula of all these epic stories of two male heroes fighting evil -- for reasons!!! 😄 ❤ So I started having these lucid dreams and met Adam in one, in 2006 - didn't know who he was, but it felt like family: very very calming, I was so happy I had angelic family so that explained why I was weird (just telling you the dream) and knowing that helped with my depression. Turns out he has Romanian roots, I'm Romanian... Just saying: all this "cult" stuff makes perfect sense, just don't worry about it, it's just our psychic nature exploring what our gifts can do. adinaispas.art/supernatural/ But no, "cult classic" actually means a work of literature or art where the author is known, as opposed to folk stories. It's short for "cultivated." 😊
