LEGO doesn’t make pink bricks… here’s why

LEGO has weird names for their brick colors. Let’s explore why pink LEGO bricks don’t exist. There are two names for every LEGO color - one that LEGO uses on sites such as Bricklink and one that LEGO uses internally within their manufacturing facilities. Many of these names are completely different from each other… but why? Why are there different names? Watch to find out!

Because Flamingo Pink falls closer to Red, it might be called Light Red. Since Flamingos get their pink color from the reddening of their white feathers.

The linguist point at the end was really neat ! Some more : - The word orange comes from the fruit and wasn't used until the 16th century - Japanese did not use a word for GREEN until the 50s, and referred to it as blue. Funnily enough, they had a word for green (緑), but just did not use it much. Today, they still refer to green fruits and vegetables as blue, because green (緑) refer to immature plants. - Surprisingly, Japanese is all but an exception regarding that matter, as a lot of languages used to not differentiate between green and blue. That fact did not survive globalization, mostly.

TL;DR: There is multiple pink colored pieces, however internally, they are referred to different things such as Light Purple. This also applies to multiple other colored parts.

This is likely because in Danish pink is called light red. There is no such color as pink in Danish thus all the lights this and bright thats. Pink is only a sub color of red in the Danish language.

My first guess was that pink isn’t a word in some languages. Spot on haha.
@TheCrisses
@TheCrisses 9 ай бұрын
The reason is the plastic pellet colors and blends they use in the manufacture of the bricks. So on the manufacture end there is no “pink” pellets/coloring. It's probably a ratio of purple and white. Their internal color names match what color pellets they are blending to get the colors. So (dark/light) bluish grey probably has a ratio of blue coloring to it.

@TheCrisses

SpitBrix does mention that at least some of the color names are probably related to the manufacture and pellet process -- I'm also thinking of things like mixing paints at the hardware store, or CMYK colors. Red (for 4-color process printer ink) is actually magenta + yellow (Things we probably never needed to know, but now you know. Used to work in pre-press). So "pink" in printing would be say 10-30% (paper coverage in tiny dots) magenta.@@holy_cannoli_

Interesting. Sounds like the Crayola company could help LEGO come up with some imaginative names for the differant hues in the future. Some substatutes for "pink" that I would personally use would be "blush", "coral", "rose", and "salmon".

Kinda makes me want to buy a bunch of Flamingo Pink pieces, shred them, and get a manufacturer to re-mold them into something more usable for traditional LEGO building. Should be plausible, since iirc LEGO is known to break down faulty pieces to recycle and mix in with the pellets.

very interesting that (i assume the community) decided to call that piece flamingo pink, when there is a flamingo in the set(s) and it is not the piece of that color. Like, if that's flamingo pink, what color is the flamingo? For real though, really cool content and fun info to know! Also great to see clikits get mentioned. I tend to forget they're a lego product, but I love the clikits I got as a kid, and I wish they'd bring the concept back. Hopefully we will see at least something like it again, with the new rise in the more creative side of things, such as the Dots and other sets focused on customization or personalization. Miss em to death

You can see why from the chart column. They are using a primary and secondary colour wheel, and yeah, in art and colour theory pink doesn't have its own distinct classification. It is just pale tones of red and purple. English just happens to have a unique word for those colours, unlike pale tones of green or blue which we don't distinguish.
@nicktallfox5266
@nicktallfox5266 5 ай бұрын
Fun fact. Pale tones of blue are distinguished from regular blue in some languages like Russian or Polish. They have more colours over there I guess.
@Uadarka
@Uadarka 5 ай бұрын
@@nicktallfox5266 We (Russians) have one more color. Light blue/cyan is "голубой", blue/dark blue is "синий".
@kamota8523
@kamota8523 5 ай бұрын
If they were using primary and secondary colors they'd have only 6 groups, while they clearly use more. The classification of colors has very little to do with art and color theory, it's much more about language. There are darker shades of pink, so it's not just pale red or purple. Did you just forget about those? Do you actually think those are purple?

I tend to think of pink as a lighter version of red or even light reddish-orange, while I think of those other colors as light-magenta or light crimson-red. Purple contains at least some blue, otherwise it is magenta. Sand Red from 2001 is the closest thing to actual pink.

weird example, but look at picture of a naked mole rat. That is the color pink. It is not purple-ish or magenta-ish in the slightest, it is actual pink. also flushed human skin turns pink. notice how different that hue is from the lego "pinks" and you start to see what they are going for. Many people call magenta pink, but if you darken it enough, it can read as purple
