The Miss America Pageant…how is this still a thing?
They claim to give more scholarships to women than any other organization, and, unfortunately, they’re right.
To illustrate these problems, John Oliver stages his own pageant with the help of Kathy Griffin.
Here are the links to the women's scholarship funds that John mentioned on air:
Society of Women Engineers: societyofwomenengineers.swe.org/
Jeanette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund: www.rankinfoundation.org
Patsy Mink Foundation: www.patsyminkfoundation.org

The segment actually spurred major changes in how the pageant reported "scholarships made available" and was part of the road to the pageant's downfall. The swimsuit competition is gone now, and the pageant is no longer broadcast on TV.

Tho it's not like the whole world is benefiting. But from what I gathered after a few years on the Internet, it's that there are US citizens that do not make such distinctions (and even worse, ethnocentrism in the US goes even deeper than the damn Frenchies!). I wish that 2016 defeat would have taught liberals and dumbasses in hollywood and the media not to be so stuck up and self righteous in their disdain for commoners. I wish 2020 defeat would teach the religious trump lovers who are fearful of anything new that going and hiding in a bunker and insisting that you are right and following some glorious savior is ridiculous. But it hasn't, and reason, dialogue, and love of freedom are looked down upon as either "alt right fascism" or "enlightened centrism". So while the libs and the right wing lock themselves in their bubbles, the far left gains more and more public momentum. Oh dear, the brave new world is dying, only to be replaced by 1984

@@CircumcisionIsChildAbuse Oh bullshit. That was once true, but boys are not systematically circumcised anymore in the US. (I have 3 nephews, none are circumcised - couldn't have kids of my own.) My brother and I were circumcised in the mid sixties, not because it was standard (which, of course, it was), but because my older brother had very nasty complications with his foreskin - bleeding and infections. He was not intended to be circumcised, and that's 1965. Our mother was thoughtful about her decision at least. I agree - circumcision should not be done without a reason, and we as a people are coming to terms with that. Please don't cling to old beliefs without checking in once in a while to see if they're still true. We still probably circumcise a lot more boys that most other nations, but we're changing, so please give us a little credit. That's all I ask, and all we deserve, just a little credit. (If you believe circumcising boys is wrong, you should applaud us for the progress we've made since the 70s - the last time it was standard without a specific reason.) I think what some cultures to the girls is horrific, and not at all comparable to boys. I don't mind having been circumcised at all, especially knowing my mom had a legitimate medical concern and made the decision thoughtfully (part of what makes her so special to me - she was way ahead of her time in that regard - she had reasons for all of the important decisions, and she was very thoughtful). We had some goofy foreskin genetics. No big deal, but it's not assumed as standard anymore. I remember being maybe 10 or 11 and my mom trying to explain to me what a foreskin was. It was kinda funny actually. She ran a home day-care in the 70s, and one little boy, a toddler, was not circumcised, and she showed me what it looked like. I'm being honest here, but my first thought was, "How ugly!" But now I really respect the boy's parents for making an unusual decision for that time. American boys aren't being chopped up like we used to be.

@@beenaplumber8379 systematically; according to a fixed plan or system; methodically. The US position on circumcision changed in the past few years, that is unlike any other first world country in the world, away from a neutral stance towards a positive stance that proclaimed that circumcision benefits outweighed the risks, polar opposite of many countries like Canada who continues to proclaim the risks do not outweigh the benefits and does not recommend the procedure. The US has also used publicly funded money to run organizations such as UNAIDS, which uses millions of US tax payer dollars and donations to circumcised millions of Africans in a delusional effort to reduce HIV transmission in the continent. Which makes sense, I mean, the US being HIV free despite being the most circumcised first world country on the planet. If you ask a US doctor about the procedure they will misinform you because the countries position has such a massive bias it's impossible to get an accurate understanding of the risks, it being an entirely elective, unnecessary, cosmetic procedure, done primarily because "daddy is cut". "my older brother had very nasty complications with his foreskin - bleeding and infections" brought on by what, an ignorant society or neglectful parents? It's usually a great combination of both. because what you'll find common in countries that don't perform child abusive practices, is infections are treated with medicine, not amputation. If my finger nail got infected, I wonder what the chances of having a doctor immediately recommend amputation, versus, an infected foreskin due to a neglectful upbringing or a forcefully retracted foreskin by an ignorant medical professional and/or parent. "Our mother was thoughtful about her decision at least." yeah too bad she didn't teach her kids to properly take care of their bodies. It's either doctor negligence or parental negligence that results in a childs body being amputated. "We still probably circumcise a lot more boys that most other nations, but we're changing, so please give us a little credit. That's all I ask, and all we deserve, just a little credit." Yeah I do give you credit, credit for slowly progressing to a less barbaric country. Like the slow progress towards most of many other important social issues that the US is also very far behind on. I mean, the US still has the death penalty, something russia even got rid of. and YES your country mutilates the genitals far more than any other first world country in the entire world. global medical associations refer to the US research on circumcision to be the most accurate example of cultural bias to ever plague medical research. "I think what some cultures to the girls is horrific, and not at all comparable to boys." which is because you don't know the practice at all, that would be why you'd claim that. So when I say it's barbaric to cut boys or girls, you'd disagree based on which body parts I'm slicing. Imagine if you were to disagree based on race. Imagine if I said, it's barbaric to cut a white man and a black man, and you disagreed, most people would call you racist because regardless of what you're cutting, the act of violating another persons body is wrong. REGARDLESS of HOW wrong. It's still assault causing bodily harm. you are literally amputating a part of a newborn childs genitals, and you want to argue over the morality of the act based on what you percieve to be some mundane difference of opinion regardless the ethics of cutting WHICH genital of WHICH sex. Which would be ignoring entirely the act of child abuse at the core of the practice, not the conditions in which it's performed. Tell me, how many circumcised females do you know? I can guarantee it's 0. Can't say the same for males can you. You're surrounded by them. Females are protected BY LAW from this mutilation. Males are not. So yes, they are very different. To protect one and not the other is a sexist double standard. Boys deserve the same protection from violence as women enjoy. " I don't mind having been circumcised at all," I was sexually molested by my pastor, but I don't actually care, does that mean what he did was okay? No. Stop rationalizing your mutilation. Especially if you expect me to believe you have some sort of well intention other than to give excuses as to why you have your rights violated as a child and your body mutilated because you were unfortunate enough to be born male in a country that regularly practiced male genital mutilation, and of parents that weren't strong enough or educated enough to know what to do. "We had some goofy foreskin genetics. " no you didn't. You were born in a country that ritualistically, systemically hated foreskin. Had you been born somewhere else, you would still have your genitals intact. The only thing you should feel lucky about, is the luck of still having a penis, and having no massive complications from your surgery, including death. an infant can die from 2 ounces of blood loss. how about you google 'skin bridges' and tell me how unaffected you'd be by your mutilation if you had that. image.slidesharecdn.com/circumcision-100326084559-phpapp02/95/circumcision-36-728.jpg?cb=1269594546 "especially knowing my mom had a legitimate medical concern" no she didn't. Just like if you were a female and had a UTI. Wonder what parts of your vagina she'd cut off...OH WAIT, she wouldn't. You'd be given anti-biotics and would have been taught how to properly clean yourself. "mom trying to explain to me what a foreskin was. It was kinda funny actually." Yeah hilarious. My first thought when someone explains to me about an amputated part of my private genitals. "my first thought was, "How ugly!" " the typical american response to their bodies being violated. and also the typical response to literally anything different. " American boys aren't being chopped up like we used to be." american boys shouldn't be violated to BEGIN WITH. Stop trying to rationalize your abuse as justified and calculated. This is precisely why male genital mutilation continues to exist today. Apathetic american attitude towards something so blatantly abusive.

@@CircumcisionIsChildAbuse I know you are a good person who is very passionate about your cause, and with good reason, but the tone of your posts comes across as rather hostile, IMO. I am truly engaged in this conversation, not someone who wants to prove you wrong. I agree that circumcision without medical cause is mutilation. Please know that. I will follow your format of posting a comment of yours and replying to it. "The US position on circumcision changed" Who's position? Some agency? A group of pediatricians? A poll among Americans? I've not heard of this change, and I would oppose it. I have a hard time imagining that would have been an official act. Please let me know. "...UNAIDS, which uses millions of US tax payer dollars and donations to circumcised millions of Africans in a delusional effort to reduce HIV transmission..." I just looked over a bunch of the research literature on the subject, most of which studies were done in Africa, and I had no idea there was a relationship. If prepubertal boys are circumcised, they have a 60% reduction in their risk of acquiring HIV, though that effect vanishes with circumcision at an older age. It's not accounted for by better hygiene either. "their sex practices and hygienic behaviors do not account for the higher risk of HIV infection found among uncircumcised men." That's from a study in Uganda. I found so many articles published around the world (not just the US) that support this. I don't know why (I didn't look up mechanistic studies), but I'd conjecture that the moist area under the foreskin, which contains a lot of white blood cells, brings the virus into closer and more prolonged contact with the very cells it infects. In countries where more than half the adult population is HIV+, circumcision might be an important tool in bringing the pandemic under control. Informed consent of the parents would of course be necessary, and they would have to want it. Unfortunately the boy being circumcised cannot give consent because by the time he is old enough to be competent, it will be too late to have any effect. That is why all medical procedures on children require parental consent, not the child's consent. Parents are their surrogate decision-makers. A 60% reduction in HIV risk might not be enough justification for some, but it must be considered while deliberating on the decision. Public health interventions almost never get an effect that strong. "If you ask a US doctor about the procedure they will misinform you because the countries position has such a massive bias it's impossible to get an accurate understanding of the risks..." Where did this come from? I have never heard of this. In the 60s and 70s, yes, when about 60% of boys were circumcised, but not today. You should visit a locker room in an American fitness club. "'my older brother had very nasty complications with his foreskin - bleeding and infections' brought on by what, an ignorant society or neglectful parents? It's usually a great combination of both." Again, where do you get this information? My brother had adhesions, an advanced frenulum ("advanced" is not the proper word, but I can't think of it - it grew to his meatus and was easily torn), and an opening that was too small, so he was always in pain (which antibiotics, such as they were in 1965, couldn't help because the pain came from tearing tissue), thorough cleaning was nearly impossible, and being a one-month-old boy in diapers meant he was exposed to potentially infectious agents quite often. When I was born, I had the same problems, so Mom decided to take care of it right away. This is the proper treatment for such conditions, and your comparison to amputating a hand is ridiculous. I have known a few men with penile bridges, and (I do ask these questions) they all say they have no pain, though I understand some men do when they are erect. "Tell me, how many circumcised females do you know?" I have no idea. Cultures who do that to their girls generally frown on girls showing men their vaginas. I don't have access to women's restrooms or locker rooms, and I doubt such girls or women would be permitted to be naked in those places anyway. So of course the answer is none that I know of, but the chances are good that I might have known several. I have taught in many multi-ethnic schools and universities, so I may well have known some of them. "I don't actually care, does that mean what he did was okay?" Of course not, but boys who had so many penile connective tissue problems are likely to grow up in a lot of pain and probably grossly deformed and sexually impaired. I am glad I didn't have to ask my mom about that. "...and your body mutilated because you were unfortunate enough to be born male in a country that regularly practiced male genital mutilation, and of parents that weren't strong enough or educated enough to know what to do." My mother made the only decision she could after a month of my brother's suffering. It was unusual that our mother had decided not to circumcise us. She had already made that decision, and she held out until she couldn't stand my brother's suffering anymore. I didn't realize that it was only a little unusual until just today, looking at the research. American circumcision, according to only one study I looked at, peaked in the 1960s at about 60%. There has to be regional differences though, because as I said, I'd never seen an uncircumcised penis until my mother showed me at age 11 while she was changing that toddler's diaper. The study I read was done in California clinics, so it would be biased to California-born males. The rate of circumcisions has been plummeting since the 1970s. "You were born in a country that ritualistically, systemically hated foreskin. Had you been born somewhere else, you would still have your genitals intact." I wouldn't have liked that at all - a life of unnecessary skin tearing injuries. Did you know that the scar tissue that closes wounds is made of collagen, which is not elastic, and more likely to cause future injuries? Did you know that such injuries also cause further adhesions between the foreskin and the glans? I think any country I was born in would recommend circumcision as the appropriate treatment for that disfiguring snd sexually disabling condition. It's not always bad. Sometimes circumcision is healing, not mutilation. "my first thought was, "How ugly!"" the typical american response to their bodies being violated. and also the typical response to literally anything different." Yes, it was my first reaction because it looked different, but remember 2 things: It was my FIRST reaction (which is very human, and we move past such things with experience and teaching), and I was ELEVEN! Eleven-year-olds aren't known for their great wisdom. "american boys shouldn't be violated to BEGIN WITH. Stop trying to rationalize your abuse as justified and calculated." Not to begin with, not systematically, not just because everyone else does it, I agree. I was not abused by being circumcised. The thought of having a deformed and sexually unusable penis today is not a pleasant one. I think a lot of boys have been cosmetically circumcised, and I agree, that fits the definition of surgical mutilation, but please don't personalize this to me. If you stop talking about me and my story, which you don't know, we'd probably agree on most other aspects of this discussions. By coming across so angry and hostile (and I can understand a few reasons why you might), you push people away. You don't persuade them, and you might not even recognize someone who mostly agrees with you. "Apathetic american attitude towards something so blatantly abusive." You've personalized this discussion to make it about me, and you've also generalized it to my country. The majority (~3/4) of boys born today in the US are not circumcised. The general American attitude has changed, and it changed many years ago. You just didn't notice, I guess. 3/4 is not 100%, but it's a damn sight better than 1/3. But with all this overwhelming evidence about the protective benefits against HIV infection, especially in heterosexual males, I know it's a drastic step, but in countries who have lost more (by %) of their adult population to AIDS than the Black Death, it might be worth it to them. Note that it's the adult population - the people who know how to farm and produce food. That leads to the secondary effect of childhood starvation and death. I don't know how bad that is today, but in the past it was very widespread throughout Africa, and a lot of children died from those famines. The circumstances are very different over there, and I don't know the right answer, but that data cannot be ignored, and most of it comes from labs all around the world, not the US alone.

Solution: Fully tax fund education like we see in for example Scandinavia. No need for scholarships for either gender. That way the people who get in to their choice of university is not the one most attractive or the one with the richest parents, but the one evaluated by the university to be the best qualified. Everyone should have an interest in that hence why I suggest tax funding. It's an investment most of of all.

Incidently, that impressive answer came from Courtney Garrett, Miss Virgina. The woman asking the question was retired BRIGADIER GENERAL Anne Macdonald. That question was asked by somone so far beyond the concept of 'impressive' as we know it that she outshone the entire field of the last 20 Miss Americas put together.

+InterGamer I disliked the video, it implies that it's somehow "demeaning" or "unfair" for women that a pageant judges them partly based on their looks, when the same exact thing happen to men in mister Universe, mister Olympia, regional contests, and so on. Stop creating imaginary sexism out of nowhere. In men's contests nobody bats an eye that they are being judged *entirely* on their looks, only for women people go crazy and create attack pieces like this. As for scholarships, pay for your own damn things.

I did pageants, and it actually really helped with public speaking, my confidence in my intelligence, and my ability to think on my feet. You have to be careful who you do it with, but if you go with a good organization, it can really help with building self confidence. The pageant I did this year had an awesome group of smart girls determined to make positive changes in the world. If we give those pageants more attention, hey could be a good thing instead of a superficial thing.
