This recap, is not at all what I hoped to share for Miss America's 100th year anniversary. I'm bringing you a critical and technical review of the entire show, because there's so much room for improvement.

Thanks Dani for your recap! Will you be recapping Miss France? :) I'm thinking, if you compare this Miss America 100th anniversary to last years's Miss France 100th anniversary... not flattering :S And everything was so dark... Also, a pageant with no evening gowns? that's just sad!

Miss America used to be the Super Bowl of pageants when I was a kid. It hasn’t been right since Bert Parks was fired. Also, I understand that it’s a scholarship pageant. But it’s a pageant. I want pageantry. I want the bells and whistles.

Thanks Dani for doing this episode! I agree the production was a complete mess and so disappointing for it being the 100th anniversary. The titleholders deserve better. But I compete in MAO just because it’s the right fit for my skill set and I hope these issues can be worked out in the future, and that it’s important for people like you to call out errors so they can hopefully be fixed in the years to come.

Hello Dani, I am so happy you did a recap of this, as a former director/producer and pageant fan because of Miss America it was so tough to watch the telecast and see what has become of this telecast. I do miss the 90s and those huge production numbers and basically the days at the Boardwalk Hall. There can be room for improvement, it is definitely important to get new leadership in the organization. Hopefully these changes can be made before the organization is no more.

I think the Miss America organization has gotten things confusing. Who says awarding scholarships to women has to be so boring? If we keep telling women we can have it all, why not include beauty, fitness, and glamour as part of the high achievement of these women. And why not broaden this organization to include scholarships to design schools (fashion and art), film school, and other fields where women are not as well represented. Regardless, it doesn’t have to be so boring. There is nothing wrong with women working as hard on their fitness and present in swimwear…as it’s been for decades. We’re essentially saying American women have to be boring to be successful women. I watched the pageant, as I’ve done for years, but unlike the other pageants I also watch (Miss Universe, Miss USA), I don’t care if a commercial comes on. It just seemed unorganized. The stage was too small and the lighting is terrible. The way the Miss America pageant is presented now, it would be better presented in the ballroom in a Holiday Inn hotel. And there really should be more than 3 judges. Sorry. IMO.

The show was an absolute mess! I guess they figured that it was only streaming online and not live television they didn’t have to try as hard. As Dani stated… these women have worked extremely hard to get to this point, let’s show them a little more respect. All the production gaffes aside, from this armchair judge, they crowned the right candidate. Emma was the clear winner! Gimme a thumbs up if you want to see Dani take over stage production for Miss America next year!!! 😁😁😁

Dani you are spot on and I'm still in shock on how this evening played out. As someone who every year for the last 25 plus years hosts a Miss America party, complete with the official Miss America Program that we order, we all were disgusted with the entire production. We were already disappointed in learning that our Miss Maine would not even be in the pageant, and then to witness this joke of a pageant was just awful. The hosts looked like they were ready for girls night out......NO CLASS at all. The Miss America Org needs to go back to their roots or risk losing EVERYTHING.

I get why it’s actually great to go through the MA pageant system. Especially for those who are into getting higher ed. If I’m joining I would go through this pageant system first to get used to competing, being on stage and speaking in public KNOWING that I’ll eventually join the USA system for all that glitz and glamor and fun lol

The two have some overlapping skill sets, but it's often difficult to transition because they style of competition is so different and the organizations look for two different things. Once you build habits of competing, it's difficult to create new ones. But, that's not to say that there aren't queens who've done both, or been successful in both.

How can this pageant survive if it doesn’t have any sponsors? Or a broader question, do pageants need sponsors to survive, especially during the pandemic, were sponsorship drastically decreased even in alpha pageants. Dani, can you make a video on the business side/economics of pageantry? Really curious about this especially in non-pageant nations.

You are 100% spot on, Dani! The best thing I can say about this year's "competition" (because it is NOT a pageant anymore) is at least it wasn't the dumpster fire the Dec. 2019 competition was. And poor Miss Alaska - she had no idea what to do once they crowned her - as if there were no rehearsals for that moment! It was a mish mosh of thought, ideas and,poor execution. It was truly absurd. These women prepare and put in long hours that THIS was the result. Miss America's 100th Year Recap, Dani Walker. I like it! You did an incredible job with this one. You did a deep dive into this pageant for real. You seem extremely knowledgeable. Is this like a job interview for you? Maybe somebody from the pageant sees this and wants to hire you. Your ideas seem excellent to me. The part where you were talking about the delay in the girls with the introductions. Those delays could have easily been fixed. You are right, have two girls ready to go. Have the camera picking up the second girl right after the 1st girl finishes. Major miss. And the B roll video. Like you said, we need to see these girls in the best light. Have them look show time ready. You are putting this thing on national television. National audience. Also with that. I really didn't see a whole lot of promotion about Miss America. That was a miss too. They should of built more promotion with it. The girls deserved more promotion with it. I recently did a video about the Miss America pageant too. I like that you are giving the pageant a spotlight. I like that you are putting more eyes and giving more attention to it. Great video! I have just subiiscribed to your channel. So congrats, you just gained another one. I'm on this platform myself. So it's nothing for me to check you out. See what you are all about. No problem with at least giving your content a shot. Loved your review, and it sounds like I didn’t miss a thing! Mind you, I registered for the stream yet when trying to tune in to the first preliminary, I received a message saying my email address was not in their database - what? I honestly was not surprised, I got what I expected because when I heard it was not being televised, I thought how sad is that. Miss America, 100 years old and not on TV? The formers or “forever’s” would not get their opportunity to be honored - and I do mean HONORED as a former. The oldest living is 48’s BeBe Shopp who is 91! The winners from the 50’s are in their 80’s! How many more opportunities are these ladies going to have? I was also disappointed in the magazibe, or yearbook as we used to call it, because NOT ALL were even mentioned! It all started to go downhill when Gretchen Carlson took over and it hasn’t improved. For the record, I have watched every pageant since I was 9 years old in 1962 and haven’t missed a year since. I am or was a HUGE fan but no longer. Such a sad way to celebrate Miss America.

They still call it a “pageant” and have all The elements makes a pageant the best: talent, swimsuit, and evening gown. The national competition will be held in May in Jackson, Tennessee. I was not able to watch MA 100th Year live or what not. However, I should be feeling "Eeewww..." and not watch it at all based on your review-- but I still will after watching your video here. I also worked in TV production and indie filming many years ago and, yes, a staffer can get FIRED on the spot for critical errors-- especially on live TV. Sad to hear and see that such an epic show would end up an "epic fail". All apologies for my bluntness.

I just noticed that the ladies' sashes are 2/3 identical (all except for the MA logo; the 1/3 left out) -- as in font, color, length and width, with the candidates' sashes for Caballero Universal Pageant which is the masculine counterpart of Reina Hispano-Americana...Yes the men in CU wear diagonal sashes instead of the traditional bilateral ones. Just a nitpicking moment for me. :(

21:48 I actually re winded this so many times because I thought no that can’t be true. Then I thought maybe they took the money they usually give the winner and dispersed it and gave other scholarships like before hand to people for academics or what not. Basically I thought they were trying to prove a point saying that winners didn’t get as much money idk

i feel like miss america reached its apex when heather whitestone was crowned in ‘95. vanessa williams crowning is what actually got me into watching pageants in the first place… so miss america was my first pageant viewing. the pageant remains… STALE. there’s a reason why a popular way to describe someone is to say, “she’s very miss america like.” and that’s not necessarily a compliment. if the organization wants to distinguish itself from the more showbiz, pretty girl with a purpose muo, and it’s truly about education & scholarships, then why not make it more about the contestant’s university & field of study? bring some notoriety & exposure to not just the state represented, but also the colleges they’re attending?

I felt the same way. I might have missed it if you mentioned it but something else I noticed was that she wasn't given any flowers. I guess that in itself was okay but I felt like she wasn't sure what to do with her arms or hands. A minor issue but I felt like it was awkward for her.

Another excellent review Dani. I feel the frustration and bewilderment through the screen 😂😂😂 Clearly your advice is falling on deaf ears. You pointed out very clear flops in every aspect of the "competition" last year and they just went from bad to worse. Wake up Miss America! To think Vanessa Williams and Gretchen Carlson came from this system. Anyways, great job Dani ❤❤❤❤❤

I have watched Miss America every year for 45 years..every year except for the past one and this one. I did not watch this one yet.. I will eventually on video. Two years ago after Gretchen Carlson re-hauled it I stopped. Not this pageant..but that last one where they had 3 judges and no swimsuit or evening gown I was in SHOCK. It was a disaster. That is why I did not watch this 2021 pageant yet. Gretchen Carlson single-handedly DESTROYED a pageant that had lasted for 100 years. What I would love to say to her is instead of changing Miss America so much that the pageant is no longer recognizable..why just not create a new pageant? I think what surprised me the most after the 2020 pageant was that there was no..none...zero..outrage from all the former Miss Americas. They should have all banded together and insisted Carlson be removed and the pageant returned to the format we all have loved for 100 years. Soon as I watch this pageant I will get back to you. I don't have the courage yet. LOL

We will probably never know, but I would love to see the streaming numbers from Peacock on this show. It can’t be pretty. I know a lot of pageant fans struggled to even watch it on Peacock - technical errors, etc. Also, I don’t think MAO knows what they want, and until they do, this program will continue to disappear.

I do not mind the long interviews but I wish they were interspersed with fun questions so we can see the personality. I have lost interest in pageants because I miss interviews. I still remember when Brook Lee said she would eat everything twice and when Miss Maine Teen 1995 said she would break up with a boyfriend if he flirted with her friend. I have these on Dvd

I love how Miss America produced and continue to produce very smart and empowered women. The organizer/s is not concerned about superficiality which is the focus of other pageants. They are more into scholarship/ helping women fund their education. If the Miss America Organization will bring back its production quality before, the pageant will be miles ahead than the other pageants which has no clear advocacy or cause at all, just purely glitz & glamour.
@lbee8158
@lbee8158 2 жыл бұрын
then its the downfall of their organization because of the 2.0 thing. How can they attract viewers and sponsors? I am not surprise that people will slowly forgotten Miss America and I dont think that pageant will lasts long. Miss Universe and Miss USA can be both glamourous and an ambassador, they can promote their own platforms too. People want a show, not this TED talk like Miss America.

The Miss America Pageant's biggest mistake was moving it from its original home in Atlantic City, NJ. years ago. This year's show looked as if it was broadcast from the basement of a local church. I have been watching the MAP beginning in the late 1950s. This 100th anniversary pageant show was a first class spectacular failure. What is so wrong with seeing the contestants in evening gowns, which is no longer part of the show. Thankfully, telecasts of the MAP during its epic hey days of the 60s through 90s are available through KZfaq videos. The MAP organization should be drop ashamed to put this mishaps show on video. These hard working, intelligent women in the 2021 show deserved better.

I was there live and the rebel outfit part confused us too. I thought for sure they were doing a dance number as time filler which I know can be needed for outfit changes. The first contestants on the on stage interview got grilled and the other 3 went faster. I think they basically told them to speed it up since the last 3 were after a commercial break, that is what it seemed like. I was happy Miss Alaska won as when she first came out my thought was she was spunky and I just liked her.

Totally agree! The production quality was terrible. And for some reason the contestants' hair and makeup made them look much older. I didn't like the gowns or talent outfits either. I really hope they turn the pageant around to make it what it was. I also didn't like how they brought in 10 at a time in the intro and then announced two out of the 10 that made it to the top 10. It would be great if they brought back the evening gown and swimsuit competitions, and then make evening gown, swimsuit, talent, and interview count equally. Or maybe have interview count 50% in the preliminary and then have all four competitions count equally in the finals. But all in all, this year's pageant was disappointing. I felt bad for the contestants. You're right- the organization had two years to plan this- one would think it would be awesome but it wasn't even good. Maybe next year.

THE PROBLEM WAS PRODUCTION!!!!!! this really looked like a local state competition camera 🎥 was filming the whole time plus audio going in out of the contestants performances. Oh my god it was, it was deplorable I can’t I mean I just can’t and for the 100th??????? Wow oh wow Pageant junkies & bloggers are going to go COMPLETELY!!!!!!!! In!!!!!! On this year’s competition. No There she is, no flowers, no long runway, no real host, no escorts for the runner ups anymore, it was ABSOLUTELY!!!! HORRIBLE!!!! TERRIBLE!!!! AWFUL!!!!!! DISGRACE!!!!!! Like wowwwwwwwwww!!!!!!
