Startup at Baysville Boat Show. You can tell this is in Canada. there is a hockey goalie in full uniform the walks by the boat in background.

Well, this isn’t just another old wooden race boat, it’s the historic world record setting “Miss Canada IV”. In 1950 with Harold Wilson at the controls, powered by a 3,000 HP Rolls-Royce Griffon V12, the unique 34′ Greavette two-step hydroplane was clocked at almost 200 MPH.

Just curious, what's lubricating the fresh water intake pump at this point? I know the Merlins were water cooled, but likely with a raw-water to coolant-water heat exchanger of some sort, right? They used a radiator on airplanes. You run most any boat engine "dry" like that you'll ruin the water pump impeller in 5 seconds. Anybody know?

There is no water pump. Just a water pickup on the bottom of the boat.

@@jabom99 i know this is an old post, but, these engines are liquid cooled. In aircraft there is a radiator, just like in a car, and the same coolant is used for the intercooler. In boats, there is usually a water pickup on the steering rudder to direct water through a surge tank to the engine cooling system and oil cooler.

This Rolls Royce Merlin engine actually is liquid cooled. With all engines though, they are safe to run for a few minutes without water.

Wonder if the water pump impeller was just ruined? Don't start your boat without cooling water if you don't know if damage to the water pump will occur.

Called an in/out box, has neutral and in gear with the older box's aren't synchronized meaning it can only be shifted in or out with motor not running.
