As a Native American myself, let me be the first to say, too many of my people drown due to going out in stupid weather conditions in tiny boats. From Alaska to the Great lakes. It's the oldest story in the book. Take it easy boys. There's always tomorrow.

I used to know some real stupid fuckers who got their kicks out of going out on small boat advisories on a great lake. Never did run into trouble but they sure did find a way to run right into danger.

We were stationed in Anchorage and many times, our husbands would be deployed out to remote areas. There is NO WHERE as wild and crazy as Alaska. no where! We family members left behind knew that the Coast Guard had our guys and gals in their care. Thank heavens for Coast Guard members. You are our heroes up in AK. Thank you!

Weather in AK can turn so quickly. Even on a 600' tanker, I've come around a headland and gone "Wow! thats no good!" Most folks I met up there respect the water and help each other. Good people.

Just all around total balances. Much respect. The coast guard doesn't get enough recognition and they get made fun of the other branches. They shouldn't, though. I know we all give each other shit, but their boot camp is right there with marine boot camp and their jobs are some of the if not THE most important in the world. Mad respect to anyone in the coast guard. You are a legend, and a real, true American hero.

When you think of the military, a lot of people think of a grizzled veteran infantry soldier, sailor, pilot, etc. But that's far from the case. Soldiers are still just kids. Ages 18-24 on average. And these Coast Guard airmen are more mature and can handle stress better than every person I know. And they are still just kids!

Out surfing in those conditions, attempting to climb that cliff and then the dive towards the basket at 10:22 you had to know he was thinking “ holy hell this is AWESOME!! “. That grin on his face said it all. He knew he was in a tight spot, but had a solid head on his shoulders.

For a bit of context of why Adam was acting a bit stupid, you know how when you haven't eaten for awhile you can become cranky and unreasonable? So for diabetics it's that X100, with low blood sugar he just wasn't able to reason. As dangerous as that boat in that weather was, he was probably in almost as much danger at that moment because he didn't have anything to eat or drink to get his blood sugar back up.

Adam was a lucky young man, he could have been living in Japan by now...frustrating for his family that the coast guards had gone to help him and he didn't realise he needed help. His mate just wanted out of there!!! For the man with the DVT he is lucky, so glad he didn't lose his other leg. I've had a DVT and PE myself and remember how excruciating the pain was, far worse than childbirth from memory. But it amazed me that flying in the helo or the plane didn't exacerbate his condition. I remember I went for a drive up a mountain with mine while I was waiting to see the doctor and the higher I went the more my leg swelled and the pain increased...never wanted another although I have had another small DVT...funnily enough when I had my first ones I was living in the Victoria (Oz) alps and just thought I was unfit, and wondered why I couldn't breath properly, my leg ached but hadn't started to swell at that stage. When I got to hospital I had to stay in for 9 days, I asked the specialist "how come I didn't die like they do on planes?" he just said 'LUCKY!!!' I could have died while walking those mountains... To the skipper of the Vagabond Queen.. well done you for rescuing the smaller boat.....stay safe out there guys. As always well done to the Alaskan Coast Guard rescuers...

Yea, do not agree with that one sentence in the video that makes it seem the rest of the populace is less caring. Lots of Americans pull together, sometimes oddly like cities with the same names but in different states helping the other out. It might not always make the news or television or whatever, and there is usually someone pretending to help but stealing, but in general Americans are very generous with help. I am NOT saying any other country is less generous, I don't know, but I DO know there are a lot of very nice people that I am still feeling very grateful toward even though in the emergency, I didn't learn their names. Their kindness will remain forever in my heart, and I hope they all have very wonderful lives! It's a sort of itch in my brain that I never thought to ask for names, even though in most of the incidents, I couldn't breathe, so didn't have air to ask even if I had thought of it. Again, it never made any news or videos or whatever. I do my best to pay it forward with very grateful thoughts of those who helped me survive some traumatic times.

How are these services paid for? For instance a poor person? No insurance? Are you hounded by bill collectors forever? These folks are heroes to us; but the USA's health care system leaves many people suffering without relief because they don't present as an emergency. Clueless boat owners are playing Russian roulette with their life and everyone else's life. I'm thankful that boat owners today have to take a safety course and be licensed to operate a boat. Still not perfect. Weekend warriors around the world. Different conditions, weather, temperatures. It's all about common sense where you live. Just because I'm a woman don't think for one second I don't know what I'm talking about. I was raised near water. Been boating for 40 years. 🦈😁
