Climbing treacherous cliff faces, and scaling the tallest buildings. Jumping over huge gaps and from super high altitudes, acrobatics in the air, and underwater, and now. Riding a motorbike down a monster ski jump and skydiving to safety!
Tom Cruise is known for doing all his own stunts... But does he really?

It's fairly common knowledge that Tom Cruise executes all his own stunts and even designs some of them
And he says the reason he does this is that, when acting, he feels he should bring absolutely everything he can, both emotionally and physically to the character he's playing, and he's willing to go to extreme lengths in order to achieve that extra layer of believability.
But does it really make such a difference?
For example, for the HALO jump stunt in Fallout
They had to build a huge wind machine that was large enough for them to be able to rehearse the acrobatic sequence. They had to develop a special helmet that could provide Tom with the oxygen he needed at such a high altitude and illuminate his face because the shot was a nighttime sequence.
They did 5 jumps a day out of a DHC-6 Twin Otter, and 3 jumps out of a Boeing C-17, building up a total of over 100 jumps.
The final jump had to be shot at sunset so they could only shoot one take a day and they had to spend 20 minutes breathing pure oxygen before the jump to avoid getting decompression sickness and all of this planning, training, and preparation was done to achieve this shot
Which couldn't be filmed in Paris, so they filmed it on a clear day in the United Arab Emirates, so this storm is CGI, and this background of Paris had to be added in post, and obviously this is a digidouble.
In fact, if we go back to the start of the sequence, thanks to the illuminated helmet that Tom wears, the entire sequence looks like it could have been a visual effect, using only Tom's face, much like they did with Sandra Bullock in the 2013 movie Gravity.
Ok, so maybe this stunt, in particular, was a hell of a lot of time, money, and work for what seems to be relatively little usable practical footage, but surely other stunts were more beneficial right?
Well, let's see..
In Rogue Nation, Tom had to learn to hold his breath for around 6 minutes, they had to build a massive pool to film in, they had to use special waterproof cameras, and special crane rigs to control their movements
But the entire background environment had to be created digitally and Tom's journey down into it was 100% CGI. They also had to use special motion control rigs and cables to control and direct the actor's movements so that they would coincide with the action and camera movements of the virtual camera and the animated CG environment. And then these rigs and cables had to be removed in post and this CG graphic had to be tracked onto his arm. And so once again, a lot of time, money, and effort, for what seems to be very little benefit.
Tom had to practice jumping on a motorbike and skydiving to get comfortable with the stunt.
So you might think, If believability isn't the reason, maybe it has to do with the budget
But these stunts are so elaborate, the safety measures so extensive, and the insurance costs are so high, that (for movies that claim to have few visual effects) they are actually incredibly expensive... and they are getting even more so.
As Tom's stunts grow more and more extreme with each new installment in the saga, the cost of planning, building, and insuring them also grows.
Take the latest installment, Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning Part One. Tom had to practice jumping on a motorbike and skydiving to get comfortable with the stunt. He did a total of over 500 skydives and over 13,000 Motocross jumps. They then built a practice ramp in a quarry in England which was then filled with loads of cardboard boxes to catch the motorbike.
They simulated different ramps at different speeds to know how far and high, Tom would have to travel And they attached a GPS to him to be able to map his position on every jump and then they practiced...

After watching so many behind the scenes and Stuntment React Corridor episodes, I've learned that Tom Cruise is one of the only real "Movie Stars" left. The people like him, Keanu Reeves, and a handful of others who put in the time to train with experts and give it their all. These Marvel movies are just mostly stunt people and digital doubles, and then the actors roll in for the beauty shots and lines. Gotta respect Cruise's dedication and passion for making these action movies. And the types of shots he can pull off in the Mission Impossible movies because you can actually show his face, make for WAY better action footage.

The trade off though is that if the star gets an injury from a stunt (like when Tom Cruise broke his ankle in MI 6) then production has to be shut down until the actor heals. So in reality it's probably better if stunt people are there to do the job considering that that's what their whole job is, and they are trained professionals.

I see the points being made about Cruise's latest big stunt with driving the bike off the cliff - the camera placements and the stunt itself make it really hard to even tell that's Cruise himself. However, every other stunt he's ever done in his films absolutely elevates the movie it's in. You can tell it's actually him and it makes the sequences feel real. I appreciate him for going above and beyond to stay a real movie action hero star! The man knows how make awesome blockbuster films and delivers time and time again.

@Gralde You should watch the breakdown on Birdman's "single shot" takes. There are dozens of seemless transitions between takes without any visible clue as to where they might be. Including the scene with Michael Keaton flying. I don't believe for a second that the only way to achieve the exact, frame-for-frame identical shots they do for the M:I stunt scenes is having an actor do what TC does.

Besides, other flicks show that you never achieve that level of realism with CGI unless you constrain yourself to a specific kind of shots. Here they recreated, for example, a single, probably carefully chosen, shot from "Maverick" but what about other scenes? Watch the aerial attacks from "Midway". Despite still hefty 100M budget it looks fake as hell. Even the SU-57 shots from "Maverick" look relatively fake as well. Back in the day, you found out how a film was made years later in a making-of documentary. Now, a lot of it is revealed while it's being promoted before release. Knowing it's really him, really doing it, adds to the viewing experience. It's the antidote to washed-out, seizure-inducing, Marvel-style, overly-busy action scenes that you know were filmed in 2-second segments against a green screen by a stunt double. Two thumbs right up

@@khymaaren Just because some part is done for real doesn't mean that another part of the scene isn't being acted out. According to your logic, an actor acting out a romantic kissing scene, for example, would not be allowed to actually kiss the other to make it acting, but would only have to pretend their lips are touching. Just because the actors were really kissing, they weren't acting? What's the point of the scene? Is the point that the lips are actually touching and a kiss is actually occurring, or is the point to mimic the emotion of which the kiss is a physical manifestation? Doing the stunts practically and filling them in with CG makes a big difference than just creating full CG shots. They are grounded in reality. Full CG still has that "weightlessness" that makes it feel fake. Even though a lot of the water tank stunt was supplemented with CG, the movement of the actors was much more realistic than what could have been achieved with full CG.

But I think Gollum, the dragons from Reign of Fire and Davy Jones from Pirate of the Caribbean are good candidates for characters that feel just fine. It’s 100% about the effort you spend on the CGI, not a problem inherent with it. Bad practical effects can also feel bad and weightless. It's broadly about getting physics right as much as possible where it matters the most. Further as far as marketing is concerned, why not? It's a movie business, not doing the Right kind of marketing is a crime in a way, isn't it?
@AliasA1
@AliasA1 Жыл бұрын
You can get the physics right just fine with CGI. That is a problem that only applies to cheap CGI where you don’t have the time and tools to do things right. In fact, lots of practical effects are replaced with CGI because the real thing looks fake. So to keep audiences happy, things are tweaked until they *feel* right. And people complain plenty about shots that were practical that they think were done with CGI because it looks so wonky. You’re right that it’s all marketing, almost nothing else. I wish more people understood that. For Top Gun they straight up just lied about it, suppressing all information about how it was made so they could lie and say it was all practical. Movie goers slurp it up.

Whatever CGI they add, the man is doing all his own stunts! Give him some credit... He's better than the best stuntmen out there- who would run down the world's tallest building? Tom Cruise, that's who- respect !

Like you noticed at the end of the video - even if it's 10-20% of useable film footage, it's 90% of the marketing behind the movie. Even if visually the exact same was done with cgi, just the knowledge that Tom actually did this, gets people into the cinema.

These stunt sequences are purely for Tom's enjoyment with some publicity and a few seconds of practical footage being a secondary benefit.

Not sure what you're trying to prove here. Even if some CGI was used he still did the stunt. Also, if they spend so much money on it they may as well use it as a promotion material. I thought the whole point of making movies is to make money?

You said it yourself, it’s literally just all marketing. They’re misleading people about doing things practical, so laypeople who don’t know how movies work can think they’re seeing something real, when it’s mostly replaced by CGI anyway. They straight up just lied about it for Top Gun Maverick, actively suppressing any information about how it was made so they could lie and say it was mostly practical.

A bit disappointed with fame focus Real actor means less montage cuts, natural lighting and a lot of realistic imperfections and emotions You didn’t even mention that Tom gets hurt during shooting and some scenes include it like breaking his ankle while jumping, almost falling to death on helicopter sequence This works for me, there are a few action movies that really drive and get you thrilled
@AliasA1
@AliasA1 Жыл бұрын
Why should real actor lead to fewer cuts? What do you mean by natural lighting? We can perfectly match any kind of natural lighting in CG. Why do you care about imperfections and emotions stunts where you’re so far from him that you can’t even see his face, and where most of what you see is CGI anyway? Why is it a good thing that he gets hurt and almost dies, and why would that be relevant for this video? That sounds almost sadistic that you want people to risk dying in accidents for movies before you can enjoy them. It shouldn’t make a movie better that someone almost fell to their death while making it. If anything that sounds like a perfect argument for CGI to me.

@@AliasA1 the halo jump was 1 take, the motorcycle chase is considered one the best chase sequences risking the life (on toms own choice) shows real emotions, real fear and it shows that Ethan Hunt is vulnerable and a real person compared to other spy films like immortal invincible arcade like James Bond And yes I like to see people risk if it’s their job and their choice, I pay money for it I watch mission impossible’s behind the scenes, they publish these on set videos before premiere and when it hits cinema I would know that this is a real actor, not a double and I will be thrilled and will worry about the character I personally like how money is spent in this franchise, they push Tom to the limits. How much maths and preparation goes into every stunt and that MI 6 was shot on FILM And also you can also spot the cgi. It’s not yet advanced for action movies. I can accept cgi for static/robot cameras like Dune/Bladerunner/Gravity but it’s noticeable in action movies with hand held cameras . Matching any kind of natural light is also a bad statements as there is no such thing as a moving hdri/environment. You have to build 3d environment for every scene, and the technology still sucks in ray tracing and natural reflections/lightning
@miked1869
@miked1869 Жыл бұрын
@@Mike-zx1ye some fair points, although the HALO jump wasn't one take - it's footage from three separate jumps stitched together, and once you consider that it's fairly easy to spot the joins. Still impressive, though

So this video is about forgetting risks he took to perform stunt and focus on small CGI used in the film?? Yeah not using CGI takes budget through the roof so what? Its not like they know movie is gonna make a whopping profit. Come on you needed click bait you got it, you’re going to regret bc in the future you’ll never see actors like jackie chan or cruise. Christopher nolan said he doesn’t like CGI but in batman he used CGI when necessary and every channel busting it saying ohh 😲 he used CGI nolan is lair 😒

Nah, it’s very worth it. Because when you watch the movie, there is a subtle authenticity to what you see in the scenes. You can feel the risk. If you don’t think it makes a difference go watch a Mission Impossible movie, and then watch a fast and the furious movie.

Tom claims there is a difference in the performance when movies are actually doing the stunt and capturing the real effect vs. a fabrication and complete CGI. I’m sure it’s negligible but I appreciate a Tom Cruise film more than most others for this reason.

I disagree with things said in this video. Seeing Tom's face getting absolutely smashed by the air hitting it at high speeds as he falls down in the Dead Reckoning AND he manages to act at the same time - is what gives the movie an absolute physical presence - CGI backgrounds or not. CGI can't imitate real physical presence because there's something about physics that our brain instantly interprets as real or false. Even if they built wind machines to send a ton of air into his face at some studio building - we would immediately notice how controlled it is versus unpredictable chaos of nature which you can only learn to copy after doing it for real - but at that point you probably already filmed the best shot possible anyway. And it's why Mission Impossible movies are so successful - because, let's be honest, vast majority of people doesn't know or care if it's done practically or not - but their brains can tell. And react accordingly.

I think it's heavily to do with the principle of doing his own stunts and not constantly relying on CGI as too many modern movies do. It's also much more impressive knowing that it is all real and not just a massive green screen. It adds a bit more to the movie, you know?
