he was always one of my absolute go to's for years and years and years and some 40 years later i still feel this mans music. A true genius he was. He is such apart of me that whenever i drift into listening to blues music i may take in an RJ song or two, Howlin Wolf etc, but when i just let the music play song after song after song it's usually Mississippi Fred that is streaming. He embodies for me any way the very best of all of my favorite blues players. John Lee Hookers trance like feel, RJ's demonic energy, Mississippi Fred Hurts lyricism and long limbed melodies, and a bit of Elmo James stinging slide.

His eyes look sad when he plays...I can only imagine what his life must have been like as a black man from the south back then. As talented as he was, life still must have been hard.

Mississippi is a rough state even to this day .. my beautiful black husband is from there.. it's a poor state for sure .. roads are rough , low wages .. nice homes for the low , but if live there gotta do some home base job to find the income .. racism is still really bad there and very much talked about .. I'm just up state in Tn and it's different here .. but to be real life is hard no matter how you look at it .

I can't even imagine the depth of hardship in the deep south, but the impoverished struggles gave us the bare boned delta blues. I love it! "Hard times had a baby and called it the blues."

Fred was what I love about deep blues, the kind with just a man and a guitar and what he can do with it. Everything else (drums, harmonica, bass, etc...) are just distractions, Fred proves that.

Don't Feel Sorry for this Guy as He had a Talent that kept him out of the Cotton Fields, he was a Master of the Slide Guitar, many Black Bluesmen followed the same Route, it was an escape from the Hard Times on the Farm. Many from Both Races had to Endure the Hardships and Hard Life because Work was All they Knew!!!

You must know much of his history-he worked picking cotton and many other manual labor jobs most of his life. He only gained noterity enough to make some small amount money playing music later in life.

I don't see how that fact is especially upsetting because you could say that voice is an instrument too. definitely with songs you wouldn't know what words you could land on or what could come out of you. Could get away with saying things through singing that are far less easy to say, or to say in the way you would when singing. That coupled with the sound of singing is almost like a speaking in tongues kind of thing but in a clearer way.
