John Smith Hurt (possibly March 3, 1892- November 2, 1966), better known as Mississippi John Hurt, was an American country blues singer and guitarist.
Raised in Avalon, Mississippi, Hurt taught himself to play the guitar around the age of nine. He worked as a sharecropper and began playing at dances and parties, singing to a melodious fingerpicked accompaniment. His first recordings, made for Okeh Records in 1928, were commercial failures, and he continued to work as a farmer.
Dick Spottswood and Tom Hoskins, a blues enthusiast, located Hurt in 1963 and persuaded him to move to Washington, D.C. He was recorded by the Library of Congress in 1964. This helped further the American folk music revival, which led to the rediscovery of many other bluesmen of Hurt's era. Hurt performed on the university and coffeehouse concert circuit with other Delta blues musicians who were brought out of retirement. He also recorded several albums for Vanguard Records.
Hurt returned to Mississippi, where he died, in Grenada, a year later.

I am so grateful this man was alive and was recorded playing, singing and speaking. John Hurt was one of the most important people to ever pick up an acoustic guitar.

Incredible. Great to 30:41 hear John Hurt speak at length. I just listened to Tom Hoskins’ first recording of Mississippi John when Hoskins knocked on his door in Avalon in 1963. John’s wife is there, the chickens are clucking and crowing, and Hoskins hands him a guitar. John didn’t even have one. He’s rusty, but it wasn’t long after that he got up to speed and made those incredible records we all love. This is priceless.

Everyone that ive heard that Spoke to John said that he was extremely charming and humble man who had a happy disposition. You Can hear it quiet clearly in this interview. This is a pleasure. Pete Seager is nearly as entertaining. Thanks for posting. Love Johns music

What a treat to find. I am from germany, so I just got to know Pete Seeger a year ago and John Hurt, because I love the blues also just some years ago. Two legends talking to each other... Internet was made for things like that!
