Such a kind, graceful, gentle man he was. I Love his mannerisms in all of these videos from the '60s, he's got a look on his face that seems to say "wow isn't this crazy?". Like he can't believe his luck. I mean, imagine for a moment- You're an aspiring musician in your 20s, you finally get what seems to be your big break and get to go to New York and record for a record company, then the depression hits, record sales plummet and that's pretty much it. Nothing else ever happens. You go back to your farm in Mississippi. Raise a family, 40 years or so years go by. Then one day all the sudden some young men come knocking on your door asking if you're the legendary Mississippi John Hurt. And just like that, you're world famous, recording albums again, playing to sold out shows of thousands of people, most of whom weren't even born when you had made your original recordings. It's one of the greatest come from behind victory stories of all time.

Man, you are the Indiana Jones of blues reels. It's a crime that footage like this is kept from the public. To actually watch John being interviewed while Dylan is heard onstage is another kind of extraordinary...

I honestly Almost can't believe my eyes at this Mississippi John Hurt interview. There needs to be a demand for all John Hurt footage from where ever they may be.

Can you imagine how many guitarists he inspired? I found his records in the public library while living in tucson az summer of 1981. He taught me to fingerpick.

Wow. Listen to what’s on the stage while he’s talking. He transcends every song sung on that stage. He is an original. What I would give to be a fly on the wall listening to him, doc and Merle just picking and enjoying each others company

Crazy how Skip James was the exact alter ego of this man. Both great guitarists who made the same kind of music aproximately in the same era, but they could not be more different. John was a man of the bible, a hard worker and someone who found peace exploring the infinite universe which is acoustic guitar. On the other hand, we got Skip, who was a sketchy alcoholic singing about murders and toxic relationships with women. Thanks for the video

Great to see these rare video clips of this wonderful and gentle blues man from the 30’s. Amazing that he was rediscovered in the 60’s. I discovered his music in the 70’s and he’s been the inspiration for my guitar playing over the last 50 years. Good to hear Bob Dylan singing Mr Tambourine Man in the background at Newport too!

I had the good fortune to see him playing on a park bench in Sproul Plaza in the 60s. Notice in that very last clip a young John Hammond sitting next to Hurt and enjoying the master.

Amazing footage. I learned to "travis pick" during quarntine, which allows me to play something like this - and man...he was a revolutionary.

I've worked on this little Jem of Mr Hurt's (John henry) and this is the first time i've seen him do it live so to speak and happy i am, i got most all of it bang to right. Including all of the left hand gymnastics and thumb jumps, chuffed!! yeah chuffed you bet i am. Mississippi is one tricksy guitar player even now today and he sounds so very easy to copy which he is not by a long shot. just try it and sing along as well you'll know. (he was what Doc Watson tried to be, and both where the real, real deal) And no not easy no way, just an hour or so. though seen his picking style no thumb pick just flesh and nail that helped to figure it out some. as it is my own preferred way to play. though i'm not afraid of picks or plectrum style or claw or bouncing thumb twang and swing. But his Candyman had me stumped for a long while but, I figured it out he's an old trickster (yes) and i love him what a joker. there is an easy way to play it exact note for note (but i'm not going to let on) I just love him? And his sweet tone voice and the chit chat he has with his guitar. he never did really die he's alive still here, his spirit is near, that old guy and his smile. And it makes me smile just to think of him, and though we never met, and we never will. As he is long gone... but still.. Rest in peace rest and sleep well

Wow - and thank you. In the Newport footage at the end, I’m pretty sure that’s John Hammond Jr. and Taj Mahal to MJH’s right and left. In the Newport footage that follows his performance, that’s definitely Taj Mahal on harmonica, looking just as he does in the Dave Gahr photo (with MJH) on the cover of the album Recycling the Blues and Other Related Stuff. Totally speculative: could the guy with glasses and plaid jacket in that end footage possibly be a very young Alan Wilson?

As far as it goes, those 78’s and later 45s that blues nerds were hunting for are very robust and maintain good fidelity if they’re not cracked in half. Must have felt like Petrarch digging through monasteries for Cicero.
