Heyo! I’m back with a carving tutorial! In this video I will show examples and give wisdom on carving clay. Together we will dive into the glorious world of relief carving to create 3-dimensional sculptures out of our pottery. This video was exciting for me because I especially love to carve and can happily get lost in carving projects for months at a time! I hope you enjoy this tutorial and demonstration of clay carving.

Great video, the piece turned out beautifully. I'm sure you've made impression stamps of ornamental elements for your clay? Versatile little things. I miss teaching sculpting classes here in Ireland, and seeing the delight on the faces of participants learning something new. Plus, bas relief is always a pleasure to get immersed in 👍. In this age of "virtual" experiences, the practical and hands-on nature of sculpting and pottery are even more relevant and satisfying.

Thanks Declan. Teaching brings me so much joy. 💕 The kids discovery and growth over the 4 years I teach them is truly a special thing to witness! And you are right, these kids need some non digital outlets for their creativity. I haven’t made stamps in years. But maybe it’s time to circle back to stamps. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and write a message! It’s delightful to discuss education and creativity with a kindred spirit across the sea! 🌞

FYI I took your teachings for making a new design by looking at multiple existing designs and made a new angel relief (so my own unique design). If I am still able to leave items at the memorial (they are supposed to be doing construction on it soon if not already) that I left my last plaque at then I am going to make this design into a plaque using concrete. The memorial is an hour away so probably won't be going by there until sometime next month. I just wanted to let you know that again I am using your teachings to help me create designs and items.

I was thinking about putting out a real time video... It's just that when I put all the footage in there and sped it up 20xs, it was 20 hours long still. I'll have to pick and choose areas. I'll make the video but it won't be edited great... and I stop and start a lot because I teach at the same time... but I'll do something! Thanks for the interest. Thanks Ian! I believe I worked on it for 2+ months... but for prolly about 2-4 hours a day (M-F). You prolly can't tell in the videos but I make art while my students are working. So my work is halted often. When kids have questions or I am teaching a class I cannot carve/make. I never have uninterrupted work flow, so I might not be the best judge for how long something takes! The little tile of scales took me 30 minutes, but it is very rough and still needs to be cleaned up, so.... I hope that helps! The beauty of carving is doing it for peace. Having repetitive, slow movements seems to put my mind at ease as long as I dwell on positivity. For me it is exciting to do tedious work and so I LOVE carving! :D

I will be making a video on the glazing soon! And I think it was a flattened juice box/bag thing in her mouth :D It was bitter sweat editing video footage with students in the classroom and without masks on! That last shot is my favorite. And when I was filming it I told them they would be in the video if they didn't move for a second, but that at least they were out of focus. They said they wanted to be in the video but only if I put them in focus and my pot out of focus, LOL! I miss seeing my students

Hi - I asked this on IG, so you can ignore me there! You start with the background by cutting under the "furthest" section first. But if you have a lot of background, is all of the background carved so it is the same level? I always carve away and then try to smooth out the background section I carved with the rest of the piece that won't be carved and it's a mess!! Thanks - I hope I was somewhat clear!! You are a really good teacher!
@MissLinneaLark
@MissLinneaLark 3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. I actually don’t carve the entire background all the way back on a large pot. On the little scale tile it makes sense but on the large pot I carve deeply around an object and then gradually ease up until I’m back to the surface level. It’s like the scales being carved at a diagonal angle. It kinda makes for an optical illusion. Hope that makes sense.

I made a relief carving into wood that I will be leaving at a public memorial for victims that were killing by a shooter some years ago. Sprayed the final version with a stone texture and then applied a clear coat to be outside. Couldn't have done it without the tips in this video even though I was doing it in wood instead of clay.

@@MissLinneaLark Sorry for the long delay between responses but I had forgotten I have Instagram because I rarely use it. What is your handle on there? Also have you seen the concrete mix (uses materials from the local hardware store) that works like clay but hardens like cement that if sealed should be able to withstand being left outside? Might be something you would like to try and even introduce your students to. There is a lady who has a video about it here on KZfaq I plan to try it out myself once I can get the supplies from the hardware store. If interested I can point you to her video.
