I loved this episode so much it was incredible in my opinion. I loved the Geralt and Ciri moments and Nivellen and his Bruxa. It’s been a while since I’ve read the short story but it captured everything I remembered from it beautifully. It hooked me so bad at 1am on release day that I decided to stay up and watch the rest in one night lol. It messed up my sleep schedule for sure but it was a good night and this is my favorite episode of the season. Maybe because they were working with good writing ? Probably there are many moments in blood of elves that I really wish they would have adapted but it seems like they made this episode and got tired of adapting.

Oh wow I love that illustrated book you have!!! And completely agree Episode 1 is my favourite episode of the season! The display of emotion (from the emotionless witcher) upon learning of the false death of Yen. The differences between the novel and show in this episode didn't bother me...unlike future events to come where the show killed someone out of the blu that raised my grouch meter lol Looking forward to your commentary on the other episodes!

Nice to see your in depths analysis of the episode and I agree with you with the teleporting convience for a show and a lot of time it just felt really deus ex machina when people turned up the exact moment they were needed. I also think you an interessting point with the timeline in the first season, i think as confusing as they were they masked a lot of the weaker writing of the show, that was exposed way more in season 2. The 14th mage thing at the time I did not think to much of it, because triss gets the short end of the stick in this show a lot, but it turns out it was just the beginning of the holy saviour yennefer story line once more. My only problem with episode 1 and the nivellen story was, that I dont think they did a great a job in explaining what exactly his curse actually was. A lot of people i talked to thought that this was a pretty nice curse with the ability to summon baths, food, daggers etc. and the bad side the desperation from the books doesnt really translate.

I'm only halfway through the series ( I know, I'll watch it all XD), but I really liked episode 1; it was a strong opening, IMHO. Also, yay, cool witcher things. I'd get that book if I had the money for it.

Hm I felt like Nivellen in the story really was so weird and creepy with all the women. In context, he was acting like so many noblemen, taking advantage of others’ poverty and essentially buying their women. He then justified it by saying he gave them everything they needed and sometimes their fathers were abusive. So he took advantage of their situation, because he could really since he didn’t seem too concerned with breaking the spell. They helped him get used to being around other women? Aka seduce other women who really didn’t have any choice but to be there. And sure some were all wild and took the reigns. But according to his story, pretty much every single person in his life controlled him, and he was the weak willed innocent bystander. Even when he was the leader of a murderous gang! He even said that by a certain point, he knew what to do with a girl who had a certain attitude, and essentially how to use that to his own benefit. I thought it was pretty clear in the stories that they were having affairs, but then everyone emphasizes he didn’t do anything untoward to them, nothing they “didn’t want.” I guess it’s so dubious considering that’s what most abusers say, and even if what he said was technically true, the power dynamic was still completely lopsided, and he was not the victim. Just seemed as though he was grooming them all. Which frankly was in line with his behavior around Ciri.
