Human societies have long used the theme of the quest for self-knowledge as a vehicle to assess their own cultures and to explore ethical situations arising in civic life. This course examines texts from diverse cultural traditions in which protagonists confront their inherited identity of culture and language, providing a broader perspective on self-discovery in our own society.

Dear Mr Hughes, no idea whether you will ever read this. I have watched many of your lectures both the older ones and more recent and you are a great teacher. You help make the ancient myths and texts interesting and relevant to us in the present day. Thank you for posting these on You Tube for everyone to access and enjoy.

I also like to add: if enough Gen-Ed teachers took the approach of Professor Hughes, then the liberal arts would be seen as the essential education as it should be. Cultural competency and public affairs consciousness are too lacking in today's world. It seems that at least, the students in his classes, understood that higher educations are not only about a piece of paper and general knowledges are also useful to them. The lessons in these classes provide thinking skills and experiences that help navigates human lives. They arr not only about monetary and prestige gains for the colleges or paid hobbies for the teachers. I am glad that I found him.
