If he were to admit it, it was the stillness, the emptiness that bothered Thomas the most. He'd refused to leave on the last ship bound for Mars. The earth was doomed, they said. The radiation soaked atmosphere would eventually claim every living thing. But 2544 Shoreline Dr. was his home and no amount of radiation would change that. He'd grown up on these beaches and raised his children along the surf. They'd pled for him to come, but there was no changing his mind. He'd kissed them all goodbye, his grandchildren too, and returned to his table and tea. Studying his wife's picture on the wall, he smiled and tipped his cup towards her as the pattering rain continued to wither the palms.

It had been raining for days, with no letup in sight. It was never a heavy rain - just a constant drizzle. I stuck my hand out the window for a moment and let the drops fall on it. I put a finger to my mouth and tasted the dampness. It was more than a little bitter and subtly ashy. I rubbed my hands together and it also felt a little slimy. I glanced up as a palm frond fell - making a damp slap as it hit the ground. It wasn't the first to fall and certainly wouldn't be the last. It was so chilly for a summer day, so I shut the window and turned my back on the bleakness. It was amazing that an eruption so far away in Wyoming could affect the weather in Hawaii so quickly. I shivered from the cold ... and the fear....

Anytime I read about that or see documentaries on it, it scares me, frankly... 😰 Although, I have recently heard it's still not supposed to blow for a very long time, thankfully... That gave me a great deal of relief... 😮‍💨

Feel like the tropics in winter. Abandonded resorts on a skeleton crew, incredibly peaceful and overcast. Christmas in East Asia is always a pleasure.

Mistrina, her old wrinkled eyes caught in a loop of endless tears, was reminiscing, In this lifetime, she wanted to transition comfortably and without pain. With the aid of her walker, she slowly paced to the dripping window, her sorrow and anxiety reaching a peak point, So many decades had happily and silently passed, good positive memories forged, but now devastation and destruction had finally come knocking, The treacherous sky brought poisonous news, her beloved palm trees were weeping in pain. She put her quivering hand on the cold window pane, as to absorb their torment, smiled and closed her eyes for the final time.
