Crazy year. Josh Allen changed the OT rule and finally have a home game against Mahomes and couldn't get the job done. @@tigera6 that is how scenarios work. 9ers missing the extra point changed the whole strategy for KC. And to think, so many people had written the Chiefs off this year. So many people kept saying this was Buffalo or Baltimore's year. Heck, even the 49ers were the favorites in the SB. At some point, people have to acknowledge, no one in the NFL, come the post season, should be favored over the Chiefs until we actually see them not make an AFC title game. Chiefs are a dynasty now, its time to stop clowning around and thinking Allen and the Bills, or Jackson and the Ravens, or even Burrow and the Bengals are on the Chiefs level. 49ers played a great game, and really gave it their all, but the Chiefs run the NFL right now.

I have to agree with you. Even I counted the Chiefs out after their huge loss to the Raiders in the regular season. I was wrong and thought they'd easily lose to the Dolphins in the wild card. I would say they were dominated the first two quarters. Then the last two minutes of 2nd quarter the chiefs figured them out and drove down field. Then the 3rd quarter they held 49ers scoreless and scored 10 themselves. Then the fourth quarter they drove down field and scored. SF's defense didn't dominate when it counted the most: on the last possession of the game. When someone is playing against a QB as great as Patrick, they have to make him work for his TDs during the _entirety_ of the game if they want to win. Not some of the game, not half the game, and not even most of the game. Patrick just went back to back because opposing teams didn't make him work for his TDs the entire game.

First things first.... It shouldn't of even gone to overtime for the Niners. Shanahan's play calling throughout the second half cost them. He would kill their own drives like on second down when he chose to pass with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth and they were doing well running the ball. the reason they didn't run the ball in the third quarter was because of penalties and blown-up plays resulting in negative yardage forcing them to have to pass the ball. Overall they did run the ball a lot at 28 carries. Honestly, the conservative play calling aiming for field goals in the 4th quarter was more problematic. You could tell the decision was made to play for the field goal once they were within range. But the biggest reason SF lost is just a general lack of attention to detail with the muffed punt, penalties negating big plays, and the blocked extra point.

Last night was exciting but NFL playoff/championship OT is not as exciting as NHL playoff/championship sudden death OT. You can anticipate a score in football based off who has the ball. In hockey possession changes in a blink of an eye which can lead to a OT game winning goal.

Both teams had equal mistakes so there’s no what-if game to be played here. Pacheco lost a fumble in the RZ right after the bomb from Mahomes, completely killed all momentum. Pacheco fumbled again to start the 2nd half, giving the Chiefs 2nd and 22, changing what play gets called, leading to a Mahomes pick. Don't know if you have seen the most recent reports but Andy Reid said their gameplan going into the game for overtime was if they won the coin toss, to opt to play defense first and get the ball second. The reason was they already decided if the 4ers scored, they would have 4 downs and also were going to go for 2 and win the game right there. This is just another case of why Andy Reid & Co. will go down as one of the best. Shanahan playing for the "Next Score Win" when Reid was never going to let it get to that point.

@edharris6452
@edharris6452 3 ай бұрын
I disagree with Greeny. Now if this was college football, then yes you always take defense if you can, but this is NOT college overtime rules. Here are some differences: 1) You get the ball at the opponents 25, but at the opposite end of the field in the NFL 2) In college, you have to go for 2 points after scoring a TD in the second overtime and only 2 point conversions are attempted in the third overtime. 3) In the NFL, whoever has the ball third wins with any score. Armed with the above info, here are the possible outcomes in NFL OT: A) First team scores a TD, second team scores a TD, and first team wins with a FG B) First team scores a FG, second team scores a FG and first team wins on a FG C) First team scores a TD and second team wins with a TD and 2 point conversion. D) First team scores a FG and second team scores a TD (I’m leaving out the obvious outcome of the first team scoring no points) So, if you look at the math, the win opportunity in the NFL is about even. That means other info must be considered to finalize your decision, and in the Niner’s case Kyles said that THE DEFENSE WAS GASSED and would have an entire field to defend. Also when the defense was better rested, they were able to stop KC from scoring TDs. So, since you know that Mahomes is going to get the ball regardless and of course you want to stop him, why give him a weakened Defense to work against? I know everyone is saying that you give PM an extra down, but the Niner’s still had their chance to stop them at 4th and 1. That was the game and they didn’t do it. So no, I don’t think that the decision not to kick in OT cost the Niners the game. They had a 3rd and 4 that wins the game if they convert. They shied away from CMC after he fumbled while KC kept confidence in both Pacheco and Pat after their turnovers. And of course, Jones was completely unblocked which was an inexcusable error at a critical juncture in the game (KC would have been forced to win the game on a 2 point conversion…) Give Kyle a break. This was not a slam dunk goofball decision but any means. It was thought out before the playoffs, and made sense given the situation, but we have the luxury of hindsight critique.
@clipcoug1139

Exactly. The people who try and use the college OT rules don't realize that each team in college get the same amount of possessions. However in the NFL, if it's still tied after each team has a possession, it's sudden death. There is no sudden death in college.

Taking the ball first means that if SF scores a touchdown, and the Chiefs answer with one of their own, then the 49ers could end it with a field goal. Moreover, the defense had just finished an 11-play drive in under two minutes. Nick Bosa, like the other guys on defense were gassed, and fighting for air. A lengthy offensive drive gives the defense a chance to rest. There were pros and cons for both options. As a 49ers fan, we probably still lose even if we let the Chiefs have first possession.

@@alikhat1647 true but I’m shocked how Kyle shannon did not inform his players of the rules of overtime , but it let’s me know he did not know the rules 🤦‍♂️

Did not realize that Aiyuk was wide open in the end zone when sneed slipped and you can even see he was frustrated when the ball was thrown to Jennings’s

The play right at the end, 3:13 in this video, Aiyuk was wide open right in the middle :(

There is no advantage to go first. Why give Patrick the last chance in OT? Dans right in this case. Kyle always defends his decisions, never says I blew it, never.

There was a game manager out there for one team, and a game changer for the other team so it's not surprising that they'd rather no pressure on their game managing QB when they could try and let the defense save the day.

I do think that the end of it counts as the end of a quarter instead of half should probably be changed.

I think the playoff overtime rules should be college rules… would’ve been so lit

I'm not even a San Francisco 49ers fan and I felt really bad for them. What a way to lose on the biggest stage... what a shame.

This is bull! If KC didn't score, they'd be saying SF did the right thing. Let's face it, the Swifties won. So predictable.

Kyle didn't make a mistake on deciding to get the ball 1st. Neither teams can guarantee a score whether they get the ball 1st or not. Both teams still has to score in OT, unfortunately one scored a fg and the other scored a td. Blaming Kyle for wanting to get the ball 1st is ABSURD !
