I can remember trying to learn songs years ago realising they were too hard and coming back to them later on and being able to play them, you get better, sometimes you can't see it but you do get better.

This is actually the best advice on here. You don't need toys. You don't need lots of guitars, in fact you look like you're just trying to hard when you can barely work your way through smoke on the water yet you have a $10,000.00 guitar collection and a room filled with full cab amps 🙄 (bit of an exaggeration, but i can count on both hands the number of times I've met dudes with over $5,000.00 worth of gear who have been playing for a year and are still working through their basic chord shapes. This is ridiculous. Choose a beautiful guitar with a color that just makes you NEED to pick it up when you walk past it. Then you're 1. Not wasting money on sh** you'll never use, and 2. You're practicing a lot more because you're attracted to the instrument in your hands. For me, I had to have a seafoam strat when I was 9 years old and I saw one for the first time. Guess what: back then, those were only offered in the American models, and i couldn't even afford a Mexi. So; bought a used navy blue Squier strat from a friend thst came with a little frontman practice amp for $100.00. Got good enough on it to convince my dad by the time I was 17 to upgrade me (without my asking him; it was a total surprise) to a sunburst Mexi strat. That REALLY amped up my courage, and motivation, and confidence, and I remember practicing SO much more because I was SO much more attracted to the look, feel, and sound (the look alone was enough though, hence my earlier point) that I was practicing more than ever before. Once I started playing gigs, I told myself it was time to bring my dream to life. I promised myself I would only use money I earned from playing gigs, and if I was good enough, I'd earn enough for my dream; the seafoam American. Sure enough, I did. To this day that is the only electric I own, the only one I've ever wanted or needed, and have less than 0 plans to ever replace, sell it, or even add another guitar to my collection. People, one last point. Your guitar is like... almost as important as the person you choose to spend your life with. It says so much about you as a player. If you're bouncing in between 8 different guitars constantly, it can be really difficult to nail down "your," style, and if you play with only one or two guitars, people will start to recognize you for that specific color (I have seafoam everything; even my amp is wrapped in seafoam vinyl, lol), and it will actually improve your recognition in your local music scene, which is always a huge, huge help. Now, as soon as I walk into a gig people start asking about my seafoam because at this point I'm famous for it; its a part of who I am and I am as a musician, forever bonded to it.

@@alexcarter2542 trying too hard? 🤣🤣🤣 So you can't be a guitar collector that plays a little guitar? How is that 'trying to hard'? I don't get where people come up with this 'I'm not good enough for a decent guitar" crap, either. You don't have to play like a professional to be able to go buy an American made Strat. There's no reason whatsoever for anyone to think...im not good enough to have a $2000 guitar, yet. If you're just starting, day 1, and you want a $2000 strat. Buy it. I'd rTher be motivated to play from day 1 than give up on month 3 because I got a shitty guitar that doesn't inspire me to play and that I don't even like. You people come up with some of the most ignorant, illogical shit I've ever heard. Just like the people that say "start on an acoustic guitar and when you're good enough and deserve one, then buy an electric.". Bullshit. By that American strat if that's what you want. There's no reason not to. None. Oh, you're new to guitars? So? Is a $200 guitar going to inspire you to play more? Be easier to play? Likely not. So there's really no reason to not consider any guitar instead of thinking you need to wait until so many years before you "deserve" something decent. That's just pure bs, IMO. Crap. Nonsense.

JC agree. If you can afford it and you want it...buy it. It’s no one else’s business how you spend your money. I was talking to a friend of mine once about Martins. I basically said “I don’t deserve a Martin.” His reply...”we all deserve a Martin.” Never truer words were never spoken.

@@JC-11111 no, you can. That wasn't the point of the original post, though. "Beware the man with one gun," remember? You're bringing up another point entirely. If you're a collector, who's more interested in collecting guitars than playing them, far be it from me to criticize you for that choice. Anybody who is into guitars in whatever way they're into them is a friend in my book. Im trying to offer a piece of advice to the 13 year old kid that walks through a guitar center and thinks he needs every guitar hanging on the wall in order to ever be a musician worth anything. I remember being that kid, and I wish that back then there had been more experienced players trying to give me the advice I'm trying to give now.

When I started playing 30 years ago I didn’t even have money for my own guitar and had to borrow a friends guitar. His parents had money so he had like 3 guitars. I worked part time and used my own money to pay for lessons and used the guitar my friend lent me for a whole year. During that year I put a 1989 Charvel Jackson fusion custom on layaway and slowly paid it off in 9 months. I played the living hell out of just that one guitar for 10 years before I ever got another one. 30 years later I have many boutique and custom guitars and I play everyday, and sometimes twice a day, but I still have that 1989 Charvel Jackson fusion custom tucked away safely inside it’s case, and I still pull it out every so often and play it and maintain it. I agree 100% that you earn the gear by being a player, not a collector.

+1 Setup the "$50" guitar. Also have an amp/pedal that you don't need to fiddle with to get the tone you want (use presets or tape on the knob settings) so you can grab the guitar tune up and play -- often a ten minute practice session every day is better than an hour every six days. Fixed bridges/blocked trems cut down on the distractions too.

Even Jimi Hendrix said too much diggin' will stop you creatively. Diggin' meaning being too much in awe of other musicians. Freddie Kings Stumble is still one of the cornerstones of my playing, and whatever level I achieve, it still gives me the thrill of accomplishment. That one song has enough challenge for me, because the feel of it surpasses the technicality of it. ;-)

Very much a beginner but there is some merit to the "noise generators" still I think. Even VERY new, I still find myself kicking on the fuzz/delay/drive (only 3 I have) to noodle and find something that just sounds cool. Breeds some creativity early on that lacks with just a basic tone. Does it hamper my actual practice? Probably but it also causes me to pick up my guitar on times when I otherwise wouldn't. Also to anyone on the fence, Rock and Roll Bootcamp is GREAT value for the money!

As a beginner, I believe pedals/effects are a must. How can you be motivated to play when you can't even emulate the songs you're trying to learn/play? Nobody wants to play Smoke on the Water clean Lmfao. You don't even know if you're playing it right. So what's the point?

@@dsddsdd7566 I know. That's exactly why I own a Fender Mustang II amp with 1-12" speaker as a beginner. It has everything I need and it's inexpensive used. I've got reverb, multiple delay types, tremolo, flanger & chorus stuff, phaser, octaver, and step-filter effects. Everything and anything I need for someone just 3 months in. And I paid a whopping $45 for this thing. Score! I really got a deal on that Fender considering I paid $40 for a Line 6 Spider IV with 8" speaker and less effects. Also doesn't sound as good as the Fender. I was really kicking myself for even buying it lol. I found the Mustang just 3 days after I bought the Line 6 Spider IV. I guess I could put the Line 6 up on Facebook marketplace, etc...or get a splitter and run in 'stereo' mode, with one cable to the Fender and one to the Line 6. Hmmmm🤔 that might actually be something to look into.

This is a really great video alltough there are some things I would've added for example how you practice matters more than the time you put in it. For the most part in my beginner stage I didn't really paid that much attention to timing. Start using a metronome for scales and even songs as you learn them you will thank yourself in the longrun. Another good tip is to tap the beats or every other beat with your foot. Its harder than you think but it wastly improoves your ability to play. These are things that will make your life easier when you start playing with other pepole. And another thing music theory is really useful for understanding and connecting things. If you start learning it even the basic understanding of how the major scale works with chords and modes will clear up a lot of confusion that you might have and make jamming a lot easier. Theese are some things that I wish I would've done. I say this as a musician who used to gig before this virus thing and is tought by professionals. Other than that this list says it all. I would've loved to know this information as a beginner. Thank you for this!

I'm a complete beginner and I agree on the point about gear, its a trap I didn't want to fall into, however I wanted to buy the best I could afford and only buy what I needed to get playing, not to fussed about effects and pedals at the moment, the other thing about practice amps, I like their small size, when set properly and not pushed too hard, they sound okay to practice with, also I can move it to the next room to rock out without breaking my back. 🙂

Paul Gilbert and Dimbag Darryl are why I play guitar. Wanting to shred like them, but starting with Am-G-D songs was rough but worth it. I was lucky enough to take a guitar basics class in highschool as a music elective. Signing up i thought "easy A". At the time I knew the cowboy chords, and a few simple riffs. The class forced me to finally take on Barre chords, and all the variation chords like sus, 7ths, etc. Our teacher started us on songs from the 50s and we worked our way towards modern pop songs. Learning to do the basics *well* is nearly as important as having fun playing.

My main distraction. I'm always doing things to upgrade my rig. I come from a mechanical background; motorcycle tech mostly, but have fixed everything from weed whackers to farm tractors. I've also done some woodworking. Even though It does take time that I could use playing; I get satisfaction from making things custom. Will I ever call it good enough and stop? I've actually tried. Don't see it happening. Just got some more guitar tools, upgraded electronics for my SG should be here Monday; going to custom hand wire it. No, I don't see an end to it. One issue I came across was thinking I can't play something if I can't play it on my first attempt. It's more of an intermediate player issue once we get cocky with our guitar playing. Don't try to force yourself to get it right the first time, just take it slow and work your way up. Might take a few minutes, hours, days, or even weeks, but you'll get there a whole lot faster if you don't give up after one attempt. There was one song I couldn't hope to learn at one point, and I stopped playing for about 2 weeks. When I came back, I played the song all the way through on my first attempt. Patience, young one, patience.

What he said about not having too much gear can also be applied to plug-ins and different rigs/amps etc when using a DAW or program like GarageBand, you can do everything you need to do with the trail versions so there is really no point in buying Slash’s set-up so you can sound just like him because you will just be disappointed. Any good guitarist can make the most basic of equipment sound great and it’s only when you have your own sound by the style you play that you can later enhance that sound with effects. That being said effects are awesome and you should experiment like crazy with them but the effects available for free can do everything you need and want them to do and more. Sorry Ampiltube makers.

The song that remained harder than it sounded to me for a long time: "This charming man,' by The Smiths. Whenever people talk about great guitar players they tend to focus on players known for their solos. Rhythm-based players never get the love they deserve. I honestly think if you were to ask players what made them want to play, it would be the rhythm playing that was at the root of it. If you think about it, it really wasn't until EVH and the subsequent "80s self-indulgent/songs are just the scaffolding for the solo" days that soloing became the main focus. "(Notice i started the quotation marks after EVH; i want to nip the potential hate in the bud, with him it was all his playing).

Having first started taking lessons in the late 80s/early 90s there's 1 thing that should be avoided is the "buy a really cheap guitar to start out with," to see if you stick with it. I think 1 of the biggest deterrent to actually sticking with guitar longer than a couple months are guitars that are so difficult to play that SRV would have trouble with it, let alone someone who hasn't even developed calluses yet.

Good advice! Still gotta have delay. I mean the Edge was just harmonics and delay and he got really rich.

Never played lead, keyboard player ever since. Guitar apps allow me to sound like a pro, but can finger like keyboard. I won't touch a guitar without delay...

I'm 4 months in so thanks for this video, helped me see a bit more clarity. I've got a second hand (slightly bruised) Squier Strat and I'm yearning for a better guitar. Would you advise getting it set up (I'd have to learn and do it myself, yay corona) or take the plunge and get the PRS I've been eyeballing? 😂

I think having gear that looks and sounds good is crucial for every guitarist. So also for beginners. It does not motivate to play on a mini practice amp. It sounds horrible and you can not get the sound of your favourite band/guitarist. When I got rid of my shitty practice amp and heard myself playing on a Marshall, I was positively surprised by myself and went playing *way* more!

I got a Strat a month ago, & two weeks after that, played Pipeline & Walk Don't Run through a Fender Reverb Tank & Bandmaster. Now it's on layaway. [As Austin Powers] That's motivation, baby!

The lead singer/rythem guitarist in my band is a "Gear Head" like, 100%gearhead,lol... And I have tried to explain this to him forever, you dont HAVE to buy the exact same sound as other players, create your own sound, i mean...you can get similar sounds to the player you worship without buying certain kinds of amps and pedals, ya know? I'm being humble when I say this, but luckily he has me as a lead guitarist to shake him up a lil'! Lol!

I find gear heads are like golfers who think they can buy a better game. The biggest tone changes come from your hands.

Anyone that's reading this that's not aware of 5 Watt World, you should check them out. Keith has some amazing content on his channel. It's about minimizing. Getting the most tone from the least gear. And his "Short History" vids are extremely educational and full of info.
