Wow Laura, I could not imagine anything less than having them be a part of the family. That is horrible that they did not pick you up at the airport. If the families open their hearts and their home it would be such an amazing rewarding experience for everyone!

I think it was due to the fact that they made a pretty last-minute decision to host me as my organization was struggling to find enough host families. I was lucky they decided to host me. But if you do make the decision months in advance, I very highly recommend you put that date in your calendar and try your very best to pick your exchange student up as it means the world to them

Thank you for the helpful ideas! Our student arrives in August, but I first contacted her in May. We have already built a good rapport and we've included her in plans we are making for the fall.

Hi Kale! That sounds amazing! I am glad you're already including her. It's so important to really make her feel like an equal part of the family

Great video the only thing I kind of had off putting was comparing them to a new puppy because they are a person. But these are amazing tips and advice ❤️❤️.

You're totally right! Of course puppies and exchange students are two very different things. But I think it's important to warn host families not to make that mistake that a lot of people make when getting a puppy which is thinking this is just gonna so so exciting but not thinking about all of the work it is going to entail and all of the responsibility. Hosting is not always easy but definitely extremely worth it in the end

Excellent vid, Laura! (I'm still shocked from your story in another video of some old Texas bastard being rude to you once and calling you a Nazi! Did your host parents know of this outrageous, ugly, aggressive encounter? Your Host Dad should have intervened.)

I am pretty sure I never told my host parents about it because it took me a while to process that encounter. I am sure they would have stood up for me. However, I find that in this instance when a person is very very convinced that their racist or prejudiced opinion is right no amount of talking will help. Sometimes it's best to focus on spreading the right kind of image to people who re at least somewhat open to learning

We’ve been hosting for about 3 months and it has been 3 of the worst months of my life. Please be sure you know what you’re getting into if you’re watching KZfaq videos about exchange students because you’re thinking about it.

I only lasted two weeks with my exchange student. I can’t tolerate disrespect and entitlement. I took on an exchange student by default because she didn’t like her first host family experience. Now she’s on her 3rd host family.
