I see so many people starting tomato seeds and I think it's just too early for zone 5b. I always thought that tomato seeds should be started 5-6 weeks before last frost. For the first time, I ordered all my tomato seeds from MiGardner and the packets say start 8-12 weeks before frost. I don't understand why.

I have the same lights and shelving and I bought metal chain from wal-mart, 20' for about $7. I used needle nose pliers to separate the chain and open the ends for the length I wanted, 15", to create a hook on each end. Then I hang one hook on the bottom of the shelf above and use the hook on the other end of the chain around the cord to the light, then it's easy to move the light up and down as needed. I just wrap the chain around the cord for the light and hang the hook back on the chain to create a loop, when I want to raise the light. I can also adjust one end of the light if some the the 1020 trays have taller seedlings. I also use three or four lights per shelf.

I got vermeculite on Amazon. I ordered 5 gallons, got a huge box. It will meet my needs for this year, and likely next year. But I am finding it to be a true game changer. I have never had this good germination in my life. And sprinkling it on my seedlings once they pop out of the soil has been really nice. Keeps me from over watering. Helps me see the plant when they are under the red and blue lights.

@@dianetucker2711 The 5 gallon, was way more than 5 gallon, more like 25 gallons when put in 5 gallon buckets. Still had some left after filling the buckets. Very light, very dusty, but worth every penny I spent on it (it was under $40 before christmas) I went so far as to spray it a bit with distilled water to keep the dust down. Making my own potting mix has been a continual learning experience.

Ok young lady try this next year. first make a leaf compost pile in the fall/ turn it every month and add coffee grinds and anything green every month. In the spring your leaf pile should be black. next make a 2 x 4 1/2 inch metal screen board. You should screen everything anyways. screen the leaf compost into a cement bucket. Next get some peat moss and screen that add some vermiculite and perlite. The mix is 4 / parts compost 1 part perlite 1 part vermiculite and 2 parts peat moss. and buy a 55 gall steel bucket and put under your roof drains to collect rain water. I add worm casting and leaf compost to this to make tea. The best water ever to give your plants a boost. And if your really crazy start a worm farm to harvest worm castings. I also add a air bubbler in the 55 gallon bucket to add oxygen to the rain water. :)

Great video, Jill. I am starting seeds indoors for the first time and have been having big "happy birthday" parties. Questions: 1) when you add water to the bottom tray, do you go back and drain off the excess after a certain amount of time? 2) I know you need to keep the seeds close to the light when using just any old light, but since the Mars Hydro is an actual grow light, I thought it could be about 12" from the seed trays? Really looking forward to the videos on up potting and hardening off as I think I'm getting close to needing to do those things. Such an exciting time!
