That medallion falling, while tragic, is not as big a deal as you may think. My uncle owned a brownstone in Boston and broke his medallion in a million pieces. It took a long time, but he put it back together. You can make molds for the parts that are missing, from the parts that are left. The make kits for just that situation. Now you will be a master of plaster casting as well. 😁

He even said it's not as big a deal as what's going on in the world, but to him, it means a lot and when something like that happens it is a disaster. Your angest is understandable, however, the medallion is eminently restorable. You don't need to replace it. Instead, it can be pieced together by a reputable restorer. That's the strategy used to restore elaborate 19th century plaster ceilings at Windsor Castle that collapsed in a fire. The pieces were cleaned, reassembled, with missing bits recreated and then reattached to the ceilings. Like you say, restore rather than replace.

If you have a chance, watch the special on restoring Windsor Castle, it's inspirational for any restorer. Finally, make sure to check the medallion for multiple layers of paint. Best to remove them to reveal the crispness of the original design, which often is obscured by paint.

Well, this is unfortunate, but you've learned a valuable lesson. OSHA is criticized by trades people, but it's important to remember that safety codes are written in blood. You're very lucky that the medallion is the only loss in this situation. Your father could have been seriously injured. I hope you clearly mark and temporarily board up holes in the floor in the future, and take care of the other hazards in your house. None of this is worth you, Kim, or your dad's lives/health.

One advantage with the medallion being "removed," is now it will be easier to see what the original finish was, especially if it was polychrome with metallic accents. Once repaired, you can duplicate the original finish before replacing it on the ceiling. A setback, yes, but use it to your advantage. You know it will be great in the end. The powder room looks wonderful, so true to the period and the spirit of the house. Great job!

Yes, Kim is ALWAYS the MVP. She may not be out in front doing the showy work or having the know-how to do the heavier work or plan the restoration work, but she’s the support crew (along with John). And without the support, nothing can work or stand alone. 💕 So sorry for your setbacks. And sorry for John, too. I can only imagine how he felt. He’s so invested in this with you and has contributed so much. He must have been devastated for himself, for the house, and for you. In the end, thank God nobody was hurt. That’s the important thing. And the medallion can be fixed or replaced. People and the living contributions they’ve made and continue to make cannot. I know that you’re beginning to feel that now. 💕

My parents had a similar issue with their home a few years back with their gutters. Try upsizing your gutters, if you have 6” then go with 8”. The size difference isn’t super noticeable from the ground but it will give you a lot more volume and allow your gutters to flow better.

My family arrived to Germany (where I live) yesterday from Kyjiv. I‘m so happy to have them safe. They’re really traumatized and I hope they can find some peace here. It‘s heartbreaking, they had to leave husbands and boyfriends back home, as they’re not allowed to leave the country. It’s all really hard. Still - so glad they fled and are now safe with us.

You're lucky it wasn't worse, but it is crazy to leave an uncovered hole like that, if you moved the trash can, then right away cover the hole with plywood. You were so safe with harnesses when you were working on the windows, keep that mind frame at all times to limit even a possible major injury.

My dude, I totally understand the disappointment. I have a 18th century Louis XV French walnut bed that I bought as my first antique when I was 18 yo and got my first full-time job back in 1986. I still have it but when I last moved 10 years ago, one of the side-rails with metal clips slid down the front of the bed and made a HUGE 20 inch gash right down the front. SO basically a 200 year old bed ruined in 1.5 seconds due to my own negligence. Shit happens and I totally get it. This, unfortunately, is going to be one in MANY things that will go wrong with the house and get broken, go missing, etc. Prepare yourself now.

I totally understand your pain over the broken medallion and I know how easy it is to blame yourself but consider this... you're attempting to save this historic building which was in a critical state. If trying to save the life of a person through CPR, you're bound to crack their rib, it'll hurt and you'll feel guilty, feel like you should have done things differently, but they won't care. Because thanks to you they'll live a long life filled with happy memories. You've saved this house, the pain of the broken medallion will fade, concentrate on filling it with happy memories.

This could very well be a blessing in disguise - this happening made you aware of an unsafe situation in the house that now SAVED you from some really terrible thing happening in the future. A child (or a dog) could have fallen all the way through. Think about that. Now you'll never leave a hole open again. Also... FIX THE ORIGINAL! It'll be great content for your youtube channel! It's plaster. It can be glued, if properly prepared. The cracks can be filled. Mount the whole thing on a stable backing and use that backing to secure it to the ceiling. Sure it'll be repaired, but it will be the original - and it becomes part of the story of the house. Gather all the pieces, put it aside for now, learn from this, and then have FUN putting it back together.
@ChrisRubeo
@ChrisRubeo 2 жыл бұрын
Also, wouldn't they have to strip and re-assemble the medallion to create a proper casting, anyway? Well, hell, that's the hard part right there! Think of the backing piece as doing the work of holding the medallion together - then it's just filling the missing bits, which you can sculpt, or make molds of existing parts to create missing pieces. Easy-peasy with your attention to detail.

Regarding the roof, this is more good news! Even if you had no gutters at all your house is supposed to be sealed to the weather. This gives you the opportunity to fix the wall issue that's been there since the day the place was built. The gutter is secondary to that, because there will always be things that clog gutters but there should never be a situation where water comes into the building, of course. Sounds like you need to seal along the top (and sides) of the casing on the outside of the window and then install some type of drip edge. (take a picture from the roof looking down on it and you'll probably see the gap between the casing and the brick). I don't think it's the tuck-pointing at all right now, since, wasn't that repaired? But, yes, the water-removal there need a robust solution moving forward. When in doubt, over-engineer it!

I'm so glad you're all ok. I can relate to the feeling of "my stupid mistake caused this disaster." And you all work so hard! A good rule of thumb is to arrange things not for your best capabilities but for "what's the worst (reasonable) thing that could happen if I left things like this?" If anything depends on remembering to do/ not to do something, try REALLY hard to rearrange things so that distractions, accidental tripping, etc. can't cause major injury or destruction.

I have always added gutter guards as soon as I move into an old property. It’s incredible how gutters can fill and block quickly. The old house I’ve been in a year had gutters that were completely full of weeds, dirt, growing plants. Thankfully no damage which was remarkable given the first time it rained after I moved in the water overflowed on all sides !

The Butler's Pantry/Powder Room windows look fantastic now, as does the stenciled paintwork. Dude - the 'medallion' is damaged, but it is quite saveable. Clean it up, removing all the old paint (which will be much easier to do now at least at ground level!), use silicon molds and plaster to recast the missing sections, and there you go. It's not a steep learning curve. Yes - it's another week or two's work, but in the great scheme of things… The most important thing is that your dad is OK and survived another day. And never - ever - leave holes in the floor.

I work very hard to always be kind and positive on any KZfaq comments that I post. I am sorry you had a challenging few weeks. I am glad John was not injured when his leg went through the hole. I would have been extremely hurt if I had an accident at the home of one of my kids and they made sure everyone knew I had been the one that damaged, broke, ruined or destroyed something. I would probably not help them with their project anymore for fear of damaging something else that they cared so much about. I am glad Kim was there, being the absolute trooper she is, to help when the rain poured down. I hope your next weeks are better than this last one. The medallion can be repaired. It’s plaster.🌸

I can feel your pain for what happened to the medallion... but think about how much joy you get from finding out history about this house. Lots of things have happened in this house, and each event is one page in the history of this house. In 140 years, someone will be watching these videos and thinking how amazing it was that Caleb the Restorator went through the ordeal of restoring the whole house by himself, encountering many challenges, including the accidental damage to the main parlor medallion, and how he did everything he could to make it look exactly like the original. Everything you do to the house now is valuable, it doesn't matter if it's not 140 years old

For you (and many people) this house has a soul ... it is it's own entity ... and to see it 'injured' hurts - - We understand that - - but I have faith in your ability to 'fix' the medallion in a manner that befits this beautiful house

The gutter situation is a blessing in disguise. Better to see where a water problem is now before the room is completely finished. Since all the water runs to one point, you may want to consider adding another downspout in another area to relieve the pressure and volume of water coming off the roof.

Everything is coming along great! As for the medallion- it will be ok. Hugs. The house won’t hold any grudges and will love you for what you are helping to bring back, original or not. It will be ok. And the water leak- call it a blessing in disguise. Now you can figure out an issue that plagued the house. I know you will and everything will work out.

Could you put the pieces of the original medallion into a shadow box and display it in the room it was originally on the ceiling? It won’t be on the ceiling but it will remain in its original place in the home as a display.

Don't feel bad about showing emotion, Kaleb. I cried when I saw the thumbnail because I knew exactly what I was looking at. I'm invested in your house, too. 😭 That medallion is one of a kind. However, I _love_ a good, challenging restoration project, and I know that you'll repair it flawlessly. Plus, now, you'll have the extra story to go with that beautiful showpiece! If you're ever in Spfld, IL you should come by our restoration project on a Queen Anne Victorian in Enos Park! 😉

Have you ever tried contacting Evergreen studios to restore the medallion or other items in the house? They are currently restoring the St. George Theatre on Staten Island, which was built in 1929. Not sure if they do small jobs or not but you can look into it. Actually, not sure they are the ones restoring the theatre BUT they HAVE restored important buildings and theatres.

I wonder if you know a wonderful lady that’s has a channel her show is Blessed Beyond Measure , and she had lost her home a few months ago from a tornado . Sorry to see this preview image, but like the old saying goes, you can't bake a cake without breaking a few eggs in the process. I know it's a hassle and creates a delay, not to mention diverts money from your other projects, but at least you'll have the benefit of stronger modern materials to use in recreating it. I know it's still going to end up fantastic!
