I thought the portrayal of depression in Sazed was excellently done. It was hard to read, but I'm glad Sanderson wrote it like that.

I really wish someone would mention how before Elend died he burned atium with duralium (spelling? Lol) and SAW THE FUTURE!! He said he sees it now. I’m almost certain that he saw how the world was going to be restored and that BROKE MY HEART! Also I love when Spook got to be a mistborn at the end because of Kelsier. Spooks struggle to want to be important and looking up to Kelsier but giving it up for the greater good was amazing, but to know that Kelsier was looking over him the entire time? And thought he deserved that power? I finished the book last night and I’m never going to be over it

I think Spook being bestowed power by divinity cheapened his arc. It had come to a nice close with him giving up power for the greater good and then sacrificing his life to be a hero. Erasing the consequences for his heroic actions and gifting him power felt wrong.

Hero of Ages is actually my favorite Mistborn book. I don't know, I'm a sucker for really good endings, and just the payoff here was AMAZING. And I was unnaturally happy about the earring being a hemalurgic spike (first prediction that was right off the bat in a Sanderson book that I've made). Vin and Elend had a beautiful end, as did Sazed. And Spook... oh my gosh, was Spook's whole storyline unexpected and brilliant. I also agree with you about Elend's change being more beneficial. He did what was necessary instead of what he wanted, and I felt that really fit his character. And yeah, I'm always astounded at how WELL Sanderson writes mental illness. Really, the only issue I have with the story is that Vin and TenSoon never got to reunite, that was downright disappointing. Loved the video!

Elysia Goodman I agree so much! But I was also slightly disappointed that we didn’t get any “resolution” for Marsh... he went through so much and got no proper ending in this trilogy. Sure, he’s still around in era 2, but he really got the short end of the stick imo

i have to agree the ending is so rewarding I loved this book .Really spooks arc was one of the most unexpected and brilliant choices for the series .The only thing i didnt like as youve mentioned was no reuniting between tensoon and vin and my own gripe being vin reaching the state of a sentient being I felt we lost abit of connection to her in those scenes however i do see how it was necessary to tie the plot together

Is it just me or the Kandra storyline line was fascinating in particular Tensoons friendship with Vin. And what the first generation do for Sazed in the end
@l337hackzor
@l337hackzor 3 ай бұрын
I thought the Kandra storyline was interesting, I enjoyed Tensoons perspective, his trial as well. Throughout the book I thought the 2nd Generation had overthrown the 1st, since Tensoon never got to see or hear from the firsts. It kind of reminded me of a religious figure speaking for God, they were always just up there unseen and always agreed with the 2nd. I'm not sure if that was meant to be foreshadowing for when there is a coup near the end or not.

I was legit crying. I had a book hangover for days if not weeks... Damn I'm still not over it. I remember walking into my sister's room (who had already read it) and raving about it to her. Then I would just turn on some Avatar: the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra soundtracks (those fit the mood the most honestly) full volume, headphones in. And sit in front of the open window looking up at the night sky, breathing in the cold air.

Yes, Vin is great, and Sazed's story is emotional, and the ending is heartbreaking, I agree with all this But I also really appreciate this book for Spook. His journey was so unexpected, refreshing and fascinating to follow, and to me and it elevated this book to new heights (and even without that, it would possibly be my favourite Mistborn book)

This is the first time that the ending of a book has forced me to find some outlet for my emotions. I don't have any friends irl that read, so I can't talk to anyone about it and after I finished I just sat there flailing about for a minute - disoriented. Reading the Stormlight Archive a year ago showed me that Brandon Sanderson would be my new favorite author, and now there can be no question. I can't wait to see how powerful the ending of the Stormlight archive will be.

SPOILERS I thought it was so obvious that The Hero of Ages was Sazed. Those little paragraphs before each chapter sounded so much like Sazed to me, and I thought Vin being the Hero would be too predictable, so I suspected all along that Sazed was the Hero, and I think it was soooo damn perfect. I do wish we got more of a resolution for Marsh, cause I felt like he got the short end of the stick, and I wanted more TenSoon at the end. But I loved it so much and even though Elend wasn’t a fave of mine, I cried like a BABY when he died. That moment when he was like “It’s your turn now, Vin, I did what I could” or something like that, I completely broke down. And now when you reminded me that Vin and Elend didn’t get to experience this world that they were fighting for, instead they had to sacrifice themselves for it, made me tear up again!! I love this series so damn much, even though it broke me lol

I finished the book for the first time an hour ago and kept staring at the walls because I felt so broken and yet so happy with only bittersweet feelings to accompany me. And then I realised that I had nobody to talk to about this book, so here I am. I have never related more to a character than I have to Sazed through the books from being this sweet guy who knew and believed in things to being lost and depressed, not knowing the purpose of anything. It just hit right at home for me. SPOILER- I guessed who the Hero of Ages was going to be long back. I had an inkling from Book 2 for reasons I cannot explain. And then as the passages in the beginning of the chapters enfolded I grew more sure because it sounded so much like Sazed; but what nailed it for me was the passage before Chapter 34 about Feruchemy being a balance between the powers.

I completely missed the gender-neutral detail as it relates to the hero of ages’ actual identity. That’s so clever! I love Vin and Elend so much it hurts... the brief moments when they get to be together and happy as husband and wife are the best part of the series for me ❤️ I also love the suggestion through what Sazed says in the end that Vin and Elend didn’t actually lose each other in the afterlife....you’re making me want to do a re-read, and I only finished the trilogy for the first time a couple months ago ... by the way, you and the other world hoppers were the reason I read the series, so 😊 thank you. I absolutely did not guess The Hero of Ages, or the earring, but I did guess what the first generation and the kandra trust was. Loved this book, and the Survivor of the Flames arc. Wasn’t completely happy with the ending, but ya know sometimes that’s the way it’s meant to be. I was very frustrated with Sazed’s arc and thought it was a bit of a slog, but that is mostly due to the fact that I can’t really understand depression as well as others. His final moments of glory and realization were absolutely EPIC. Looking back over the three books, and specifically the pre-chapter entries, you realize the ground work that Sanderson laid for us to pick up on.

I also feel bad for Marsh, he is in a impossible situation of losing control and acting against everything he stood up for was heartbreaking me. I got this trilogy because you recommended it so much and truly THANK YOU. I did not expect it to be such an emotional rollercoaster. The thing that hit me the most about hero of the ages was that part of the epilogue, where sazed explains how he took information from all of the religions to bring back flowers, animals, blue sky etc... it was so beautiful and it tied even the smallest of plots which were mentioned in book 1 when sazed explained these religions to kell and vin. i wasn't sure of all that religion plot in book 1, in book 2 sanderson made me change my mind because so many interesting plot points emerged due to it but in book 3 GOD DAMN IT MADE ME CRY LIKE A BABY. it was so beautiful. i knew both vin and elend will die, i just had a gut feeling but vin dying was so hard, like you said, she never got to live in a world which she helped save... :( SOBBING while writing this comment oh god

SPOILERS -------------> This series was one of my first steps outside YA so like I wasn't expecting to like it so much. The first book was tough to start for me, and I was surprised how fast (and to me) unsatisfyingly it had ended. Then the second book was tough to stay fully intrigued in the middle bits when it wasn't about Vin. But the 3rd book???????? HOLY CRAP!!! I love this book so freaking much literally every question I wanted to be answered was answered in such a satisfying way. Every character I loved was given amazing impactful moments (except for maybe breeze and ham). I loved Spook the moment he was introduced in Final Empire, I even shipped him so hard with Vin (an unpopular opinion I know). And this book was amazing for him! I wish there was more early chapters of him before he got his spike but even still his story was incredible. My heart never beat faster than that final confrontation with the citizen! Sazed's reveal at the end blew my fucking mind. Some of my only complaints are how some characters ended their story. Like TenSoon literally committed suicide "off-screen" and he deserved better than that! He honestly did nothing in the 3rd book other than worldbuild the Kandra! He didn't even get to see Vin again!! It was so sad :((( Honestly he and Spook would have made an interesting duo now that I think about it. And Marsh had that amazing moment of defiance but having him still being used as a puppet was depressing :/// what even happened to him and the Kandra who didn't pull out their Blessings, and the Koloss! Also Human was lowkey my favorite character for like a lil bit and I wish he got a cool moment. Damn sorry I just really vented my frustrations. But I guess all in all I loved it and it was amazing but I wish the epilouge was a lil bit longer!!

I figured out the Hero of Ages towards the end because history tends to repeat itself. I was hoping I was wrong but OMG it made so much sense. This was my favorite out of the three. I cried so hard haha.

Just finished. Man was this trilogy amazing. The Sazed depression was handled brilliantly. I’ve had to deal with depression with loved ones in my life and Sanderson handled this so accurately and deftly that I wonder if he’s had exposure to it as well. B

I agree, it’s so well done. I always feel kind of bad when people complain about it being boring (the depression element). I know it’s not the most exciting thing to read, but it’s so much more meaningful imo.

I just finished Hero of Ages last month, so I don't have all my thoughts together on it, but... I was never a fan of Elend, so it was hard for me to get into the emotional arc with him and Vin, so it's interesting to hear your take on it. I wish I'd gotten into it like you did. However! I loved Sazed's and Spook's arcs through the trilogy. I think Spook somehow became one of my favorite all time characters in this last book. I thought I'd get through the ending of the book without crying, but then the flowers happened, and I just sobbed. Kelsier and Mare (even though we never met her) mean the world to me, and getting that little tiny bit of closure was so good. Typing about it now makes me want to cry again, hah.

You are so passionate for Mistborn and Sanderson. I love your style and channel, I'll never leave. Tor needs you on the payroll. Please stay with us anyway. SPOILERS: The epigraphs were my favorite part of Hero of Ages. When the author finally explains about Hemalurgy and the other two magic systems, plus the underlying plots of Ruin, Preservation and the history of the power and the whole planet. My favorite standout epic scene is when Vin Duralumin steelpushes herself clean above the mists and briefly hangs there., crushing Kredik Shaw in the process. Also, Spook breaking free of Ruin, then burning himself to flood the canals with water. Elend Duralumin burning Atium to see the future, then taunting Marsh to save all of Scadrial. Thanks for your review. You made my day. 😀

I just finished. Took me months to read all three. They were very tough to stick with sometimes but the resolution at the end with Sazed was the perfect conclusion to all of it. I almost cried, I thought it was so beautiful.

Aah! Finally!! I've been wanting to write some of these things for a long time! So excited about this video! (this will contain spoilers) which I wish someone had told me before I accidently read a spoiler, while I was reading about book 1! I read that (SPOILER) Vin and Elend were going to die!! My favorite phrase, I think, from this book is "I am, unfortunatly, the Hero of Ages" - this made me cry! Elend and Vin were great! I really enjoyed how they didn't have to tell the other what they were going to do because of how much they trusted one another! Their end was so lovely, when they are lying dead on the grass, their bodies restored by Sazed and Spook reads that they're very happy together now, resting... It was a good ending for them! Spook... Spook was SO GOOD in Hero of Ages! Brave, selfless, grown-up! I really enjoyed his transformation!!! I enjoyed how he literally destroyed his body and then got all fixed in the end! He started from literally the lowest you could go and ended the book as the most important human (on earth) since I feel like he was going to pick up the torch and make the world a better place! This book was good! There's so much to talk about, all the side characters were amazing! It was all great!

I know I'm late to the party but wow!! You said it so true. Saz was hurting and Sanderson really let that sink in, so much so that we can really appreciate it. The biggest bomb to me was the first contract. Like everything finally coming together. The Lord Ruler. The atium stores we spent soo long searching for and why we knew it was important. The mist and it's subtlety. Just like Ruin changing tiny details in books, the mist found a way to use Ruin to send it's own message. Something has been left unsaid and it's eating at me. Kelsier, our hero... Was he another one of Ruins puppets? Or was he perhaps a puppet of both Ruin and Preservation? Did Ruin simply use him to destroy the Lord Ruler the way he did Vinn? Did Preservation also want to kill the Lord Ruler? People always said Kelsier was insane... was that a little bit of Ruin in him? If so, did he have to fight ruin to not kill the nobleman we named emperor?

I LOVED book 1 and really liked book 2. Book 3 I was not really into it until the very end. With that being said, I was really impressed by how Sanderson tied everything together and the amount of foreshadow that was being laid from the very beginning of the series. I think if I ever re-read this series I will enjoy book 3 way more.

I just finished The Hero of Ages and am now emotionally compromised. All of the reveals were so satisfying and the ending was so bittersweet, but so well set up. Ugh, so much about this book blew me away. It's all still raw for me right now. Next up for me is the Witcher series though, which I'm excited about. I can place Mistborn back on the shelf for now, it deserves a rest.

(SPOILERS....) yes I guessed it was sazed pretty early in the book because sazed is the only person to end sentence like "...., I think. " as soon as I saw that I guessed it was sazed. It was early in the book as well, just few chapters, I think. ;)

3 Questions: -Did they ever mention why "16" was such a special number? -If the atium storage is what Kelsier had planned on using to take the Lord Rulers place & control everyone, then why did he destroy it all before he died? -Spook use to talk funny, then one day he talked normal, what happened? Thank you so much for doing this review! I was waiting, lol!! :-)

ok so 16 was a special number because they had to figure out that there are 16 metals in total and Spook practiced his not slang speech during one of the time skips (can't remember which one) and for the second question, I don't really know =))

I finally finished this trilogy last night and I can’t cope! Spoilers..... I worked out that the epigraphs were by Sazed but was well after any of the early ones were useful (him saying he was the Hero). It was a complete shock at the end when he felt those powers. Incredible! I had picked up the weird phrase of having the world on their ‘arms’ specifically, but I just thought it was a weird turn of phrase rather than being that key. I also worked out that Vin’s earring was a spike when TenSoon showed that their Blessings were haemalurgic spikes, there was some commentary on how they didn’t have to be large and that they allowed inquisitors to pierce copperclouds, so I thought that linked to Vin. It was killing me at the end though when she didn’t understand why the mists wouldn’t help her! I’d also thought from the beginning of the series that the earring must be important for her to always have it. With it being bronze I thought she might swallow and burn it at a key moment to find the ‘enemy’. I hadn’t clicked that her sister was the Seeker ‘donor’ though. I just love so much about this series! I think the third is my favourite book. I like the second, but I found it long and more dry with the politics, whereas the theology and magic of the third was brilliant.

Maybe I’m just not a strong reader, but I didn’t guess Sazed was the Hero of Ages or that Vins earring was a hemalurgic spike. But that’s what made the reveal so amazing to me 😂 you made a great point about feeling like we were in the blind most of the time.. so maybe it wasn’t that obvious. Nice review!

Throughout the series I loved the character development first vin and elend then Spook but I especially loved elend I expected him to have a better ending after all that he and vin had gone through I felt sad that tensoon and vin didn't meet and I thought that sazed might somehow ressurect both of them and they would rule the new world

It was painfully obvious to me that Sazed was hero of ages. The way they described the hero in the prophecies definitely described sazed. In the 2nd book, when vin was on her way to the Well, i thought sazed was gonna stop her and take the power himself. I was convinced 😅 i did not see Vins earring as something obvious tho. That one got me.

The part that broke me though was when spook described the flowers being the same in Mare's picture... Those powers were used and don’t renew for a lot of time. So he wasn’t full power “god” right? And someone else could use the power at the well right? Or I’m I missing something

Second time reading through. I definitely found the Vin earring painfully obvious, particularly from the chapter preambles on hemalurgy. The first time through I think I recognized it when Spook pulled out spikes from him and Quellion. For Sazed, even the second time through I dont think I saw that many obvious clues NOT in the preambles.
