It’s MiSTer FPGA NEWS AND UPDATES time! Because today we are going to be taking a look at the MiSTer FPGA Atari Jaguar core (or the MiSTer FPGA Jaguar Core) as there is a decent amount to love about the Atari Jaguar and it definitely COULD run on MiSTer FPGA as we already have a half complete Atari Jaguar FPGA Core! And we can talk about Atari Jaguar emulation and Best Jaguar Games along the way! Because for every MiSTer FPGA N64 core and MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core...there is a Jaguar core! MiSTer FPGA review time!

I have to admit that I don't have a lot of love for the Atari Jaguar the way I do for the 3DO, but I'd still love to have a completed Jaguar core! There are still some games worth playing on it!

Thanks for covering the incomplete Jaguar core. I don't have a dual-ram setup so I haven't tried it yet. I remember talking to the developer about this core some time ago... and while they have excellent documentation directly from Atari on the hardware, and that's what they implemented the core from, there are some issues with the bus communication timing between the Jaguar's custom chips (Tom and Jerry?) that just isn't perfect. How to fix the timing issues is the mystery. The games that don't use the custom chips at all and reply specifically on the Motorola 68000 seem to work. I think there was at least one hardware bug in one of the Jaguar's custom chips (not mentioned in the hardware documentation) that game developers learned howto work around, but I'm guessing that bug is not implemented in the core so the software work around is actually breaking the games. That's just a big-fat-guess with little real info to go on. :)

Systems like the Jaguar, 3DO, X68K, etc, are perfect for the MiSTer, because most of us don't own them and working consoles are too expensive and the games to expensive, so the MiSTer allow you to experience a console that otherwise you would only ever get to see in software emulation, which obviously isn't a very good representation of how the real thing feels and looks to play.

I own a Jaguar with a flash cart and OSSC scaler but this would still be nice to have on MiSTer just for the sheer convenience (and for the people that don't own the hardware)

In 1994 I earned/saved up enough money to buy myself a used SNES, but I almost bought a heavily discounted Jaguar instead. As a 10 year old, their "Do the math" marketing and screenshots in gaming magazines almost convinced me. I definitely made the right decision, but I've always been curious about the Jaguar. I should probably just emulate it, but I also hope this core gets completed someday.

I played Flashback on the Amiga when it came out. I was totally blown away by how realistic it looked for its time plus the awesome story. Fantastic game even today. I would like to try the Sega CD version one day because of the Audio CD soundtrack.

Agreed… there’s not a huge demand for the Jaguar… but I’m one of those few that want it. If it never gets finished I just have to understand.

That same “cheap move” was done with cartridges on a few of the micros. Heck, even the C64 did it for the user port and tape deck connector.

The Jaguar is the system that most of our MiSTer joypad setups will not fully accommodate. What controller options are there for the Jaguar core that will include the keypad?

With the roms I threw at this core a few weeks ago, I could only get Wolfenstein 3D to run. It ran great, but the audio was scratchy.

Not going to happen. The core developers started making edgy comments in forums and didn't appreciate the feedback. Pretty sure they've lost interest. Hopefully I'm wrong.

The versions I tested for the Jaguar core didn't seem to require dual SDRAM. Is that something optional that if it detects, it runs a little better, or is it like the Saturn core that has different builds for dual and single SDRAM?

@@VideoGameEsoterica Yes, it worked. I tested on the 20.02.{22,23,26} and 21.09.06 builds that I found in the Jaguar section of the MiSTer forums. I'm not sure if there are differences when running the games, I didn't do much testing on this core, but I didn't notice any glaring differences. The games that I managed to boot on dual SDRAM all seem to boot on single SDRAM as well. It's definitely not like the Saturn core where there are different builds for single and dual and the dual just flat out doesn't work if you're on a single setup.

@@VideoGameEsoterica No problem. I too got a bit confused, as I've read this core needed dual SDRAM and was one of the reasons I got a second RAM module. I only found this out due to some weird circumstances, poor planning and and a bit of lazyness. 😅 Had a friend visit me, my MiSTer was set up for dual SDRAM after doing some testing on the Saturn core, to check if I'd spot any differences between the single and dual builds... instead of showing him the Jaguar core first and changing into the single SDRAM setup to use the analog board later, I changed it first, then decided to try it anyways before going back to dual SDRAM when my friend asked to check the Jaguar core... to my surprise, it worked.

I don't even know if any of the Atari consoles were sold in Europe, I definitely didn't ever get to see any of these here and only got to know about them after I discovered your channel. Same with the 3DO and TurboGrafx. It was mostly all Nintendo and Sony who had the strongest presence here, with some noticeably less strong Sega presence. While I don't see anything that really excites me about the Jaguar it's still cool to get some insight into this system.

The Jaguar had a Motorola 68000 CPU in it. There were a lot of lazy Amiga ports that ignored the custom 32 bit chips. It looks like the 68000 games run fine but it shits the bed when games try and use the custom chips.

even with its complicated architecture, this should be one of the easiest to create a core for because the netlists are readily available. The machine it's self does not need any reverse engineering.

Flashback is best played on Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. Cannon Fodder - on PC or Amiga (with mouse controls). Rayman - on PSX or Sega Saturn. Raiden - almost perfect arcade port on PSX. All cores are available on Mister. See where I'm getting at? They are all great and worthy games, but you better play them elsewhere. Tbh I kinda understand why the Jag core isn't finished.

Cannon Fodder is just a rip-off straight from the Amiga, having a M68000 made this easier to port. Crap system but some good little games. Tempest 2000 is good also.
