This is truly amazing! This is the first time for me to see the catalytic burner. The materials that you have used is so simple. This can definitely be useful in disaster area without conventional heater and electricity. Hope the people in Turkey can see this wonderful design.

I have hand warmers that work on this principle. In the last few clips it appears you have a flame from when heating with the torch. I assume this isn't a catalyst reaction taking place but just a burning process?

As a pocket warmer this process works great and heats up the metal enclosure up to 60 degrees celsius for 12 hours just on fumes. But at larger scale you downgrade efficiency, flames are still visible and that means an ordinary burn is taking place. Keep away of these dangerous experiments. Buy an old Kerosine heater if necesary and use bio-ethanol of high grade.

I used a can with wick using 90% rubbing alcohol and the can was 1.5 inches tall and about 4 inches diameter and it ran for 2 hours if I'm remembering right. The longer it ran an I used a sheet metal floor heat duct boot with a 4 inch 90 degrees elbow on it with a thermometer hanging at mouth. Temp was 350 degrees for long time but I put 2 cans under the boot and temp was 450 degrees. I added an old computer fan that was 12 volt DC, an wired it with rocker on n off switch and a 9 volt square battery that turned the fan using it 8 hours per day the battery lasted over a week. The rubbing alcohol bottle lasted 2 an half days running 2 can in it. Well worth it to watch the safe emergency heat teaching grandson other ways of making heat. Plus him being 8 years old he loved using my tools to make it. I used heavy wood around left an right side and back of heat duct boot so it wasn't too heavy, that's very important to make sure it can not fall over. Tip if you get soot from burner since I use wicks. Means the wick is to long so cut it down some till it stops smoking.needs to be 1/4-3/8-1/5 inch depending on type of wick you are using. Many videos on here on making wicks during a emergency such as shoe strings and ropes.

For those old enough to remember, I think that the old Jon-e- Hand Warmers worked on this principle.

Mr. Robo, may I ask you when you did this experiment how long did the fuel burn with the amount of fuel you used in your experiment with these materials shown in this video thanks:-)

So what exactly are you using for the catalyst, is it something like a ball of copper shavings? or a ball of stainless steel wool? you do not give a clear view or description of what you are actually using.

If you want to store flammable fuel in your home and also keep filling this can up every hour at best. Also risk either kids or pets knocking it over. FORGET IT. I’m not saying it doesn’t work but when you add the wick, fuel, gauze it’s probably on par with much safer options. For a shed to take the chill off might be ok.

The universe works in weird ways. I’ve done a lot of this stuff some of it I haven’t. Ingenuity and need spark genius. Oh wow. That’s different than what I did good idea. A couple things different. Good stuff.

Mr. R. I live off the grid up north. On very cold nights my under-house equipment room is still vulnerable to freezing. I need ten hours of heating time. But the room/closet is small. Is your cat heater safe? How long will 6 oz burn? Can I use kerosene?

Since the flame is orange, it means that there is issues with burning inefficiency? As in a blue flame is the colour you want to see when looking at it. Or does this type of fuel only burn orange? Great video though!

it still looks like there's a flame. Alcohol flame may be hard to see. I think it's just burning. It's not catalytic conversion

One little change that I would make is to take the paint off BEFORE cutting the can.

As far as i remember methanol gets oxydized to formaldehyde by copper oxide. I'd be careful with the oxidation products in these experiments.

Not expensive? At the moment isopropryl is about £8 or £9 a litre. I am sure there are cheaper fuels.

This would be helpful in a small space such as a tent, however it would be useless to heat an apartment or a home.

this will occur in the US but I find these so helpful for those suffering from extreme cold in Europe, the UK, and Canada, among other places. With our current admin on track to destroy the use of gas stoves, AC, etc etc, I can see where we will need these soon. Once all wood stoves are shut down, this is necessity.

i painted used chip pan oil to paint the green algae off the wooden fence, goes on real easy and i didnt have to clean it off first ,good way to get rid of used oil without blocking the drains,, 9 months later it has not come back

The Japanese use lots of catalytic heaters to heat their homes. They are very common and use kerosene as a fuel. They emit no fumes and are very efficient. They still need ventilation as they can burn up all the oxygen in the room.

I'm fascinated by this concept, and asked a question on the forge-iron version of it. Please help me understand. The bottom container holds the ethanol, and there is a small gap between it and the upper container, which holds the copper? And, due to heat, the ethanol is vaporized and the vapor comes into contact with the copper, where it catalyzes with the oxygen in the air for combustion? Then the heat from the combustion keeps the ethanol hot so it continues to vaporize? Do I have all that right? Спасибо

This heater needs a super heavy and broad base, otherwise it's just too dangerous to use. Imagine accidentally tipping it over. That's an instant house fire. Also, you didn't warn about refueling too early, which can cause reignition of fumes, flames shooting up inside the fuel container, making it explode and severley burning or even killing the person holding it. Not to mention the instant house fire again... If the whole world can see this, it even reaches people that in progress of looting fuel trucks in the desert, light up a cigarette. Never underestimate people's dumbness.

A great video as usual, however every design needs to have a practical application for the average person. Meaning that, yes this heater will work but if you have to disassemble and reassemble it every time you have to fill it with fuel, then I'm afraid the practicality of this particular design is low. When I made one, the isopropyl alcohol released a ton of soot and the mesh melted and it turned into a big ball of sooty fire until I got it put out..
